Wait, what? There's an "open" mode where I'm exposed to other actual people and subject to whatever horribleness they see fit ? Urgh, if I wanted that I'd go outside!
I've been playing mostly solo, I'm old school Elite and it's my natural state of gaming. I've also played a bit of group for a few weeks now where I've really enjoyed the co-op side of the game I suppose you'd call it.
I can definitely see how Open adds an extra dimension to the game and it could even add to the fun to get "pirated" on the odd occasion, as long as it isn't simply "murdered out of the blue" which I gather is supposedly 50% likely to happen !
I'd welcome a bit or witty repartee and the choice of pay the fee of part (or all I guess) of my cargo or risk the consequences, and if that is what happens I may even become a convert to Open. I think I'd enjoy that, popping my "pirate cherry" may well be a nice adrenaline rush, like my first interdiction by an NPC was, I panicked !
However if all that happens is some pre-pubescent adolescent pulls me out of SC and proceeds to melt my hull out from under me without so much as a cheery wave then that isn't adding anything to my game experience, is it. Nothing positive for me anyway, before all you "PvP means we can do what we like" get on your such tall horses.
That's what I think some people simply can't grasp - they think because it's an online game there are no consequences to your actions. There are - those of us who would otherwise join in and enhance YOUR experience of the game simply go somewhere else to play and get away from you, and your game suffers because of it. Ours experience and enjoyment isn't lessened, not to us , which is something else some people simply can't understand - all these claims that playing solo or group means we are missing out on something, some challenge that they think we should rise to!
What I want is escapism and relaxation, with maybe the odd bit of a buzz.. and the chance to shoot stuff

Whilst I can get that from Solo or Group I don't "need" to play Open.
