With regard to the whole "innovative" and "groundbreaking" thing, as it currently stands, there is nothing in SC that is innovative in any way, as everything in it has already been done before. (Damage model, newtonian flight, ship systems simulation, raw gameplay, etc. One exception could be the thruster simulation system, but its usefulness in a game is still somewhat dubious.) For the most part, it's just groups of Cryengine levels with different themes. Nothing that has been playable is remotely "mind-blowing" just yet.
What is being planned for SC (but not in currently) is somewhat innovative, but still, for the most part it's been done. Landing and walking on planets seamlessly has been in Evochron for a while, engine tuning/weapon overclocking was first seen in the X-Wing games, stealth is already brilliantly done in Elite (and was put into SC due to backers requesting it after seeing it in Elite), crafting has been in every MMO ever (and is usually implemented as a boring time-sink anyway), etc.
I know there's the argument coming, "Yeah, these things have been in other games, but SC will be the first to do it ALL!" But does that necessarily make it a better game? Does it add to the gameplay? In most cases, it doesn't. Spore was a game that did many things too, but in the end, after the initial impression wore off, the game really wasn't that engaging.
It's actually the games that try to keep things simple and focused that end up being amazing. The Quake games were hardly complex, but people play them to this day. FTL is fairly simple, but it's decidedly addicting. Even the juggernaut that is Minecraft has pretty basic gameplay concepts, and yet is one of the biggest time sinks out there.
Remember, SC is a game, so it doesn't matter how many "mind-blowing," "innovative" things are in it (if they are that) if the game itself isn't fun in the end.
