The Star Citizen Thread V2.0

I turned in to watch myself lose the skin contest, wasn't disappointed.

The live racing demo was jaw dropping. Multi-ship combat was kinda meh, and the FPS tease was too much of a tease, but what can ya do.

As much as I want to race, not going to pay any more for a racing ship (which I guess atm is just the 300R and M50).

I thought the multicrewed ship part looked pretty good, in terms of potential at least. Having watched a few videos of Guns of Icarus, I can imagine the fun of communicating threats to the pilot, and whatnot.

The one moment I really did like was the little rover buggy thing - I can see that being genuinely useful and fun - and I would like to see Elite have something comparable when FPS is introduced. Maybe not buggies - but certainly something like a walker or argocat.

David Braben did actually mention buggies in the IGN stream earlier today...

Great!

Hopefully the buggy/whatever will be armed with something. Just imagine trundling it out of your Cobra, going for a roam around - and then getting your co-pilot to follow you and help blow stuff up lol

Essentially a 3d remake of Silkworm :D

The most exciting prospect was the planetary exploration. I believe they're going to go the Mass Effect route and have randomly created maps with a mission in it (derelict ship, empty station).

It will be great if they do their vision of exploration right and make a focused experience I'll be happy to have two games that do exploration differently.

The racing part looked like a fun mini-game although it's not really something I'm interested in.

Multi-crew looked pretty good if a bit rough but that's to be expected.

All in all I think the presentation was pretty good despite the hiccups. The Mass Effect vibe was what I liked the most.

That connie trailer is just plain false advertising really.
As if anyone will be able to discover planets at all in a 150 system galaxy with 500k players. Some lucky ones might, in the first week.
And seamlessly landing on the planet? I think not since SC will have predefined landing spots.

All that trailed showed was how awesome things in ED will be once we can discover planets, land on them and explore.

After rewatching this I am impressed with the connie footage first in a long time to see characters walk in a moving vehicle (since ships in bf1942 and Joint Operations and SWG), if the mistake where the dude gets blown into space was real all the more impressive.

That's more or less what I got out of it as well. A slightly randomized mass effect ground mission thing. With landing cinematic and all that. It makes a lot of sense if you look at all of CR's previous games.

makes me wonder if you can drop the rover while flying :D

I liked the new hangars to say the least. And it was nice to see that progress is being made on multi-crew ships, it actually looks like a lot of fun. The racing thing really peeved me though, and I see that unrestricted YAW is par for the course even in "atmo" flight.

I didnt bother watching anymore than I watch the shopping channel. I salute those of you who managed to sit through it.

I checked out the video Dante posted. Please don't tell me this was the big reveal - yet another example of instead of focusing on the basics, beavering away in the background on putting together yet another commercial. okaaay.

As to still flying with mice...depressing.

But this talk of improvements to the flight model. This is more interesting. Sounds like they were a bit vague from what you guys are saying. Any detail on this would be appreciated.

Its called word of mouth. Takes time to take effect but its the most powerful force in marketing. But it only works when you have a good product. Hence CIGs reliance on all those commercials you just posted. Especially when you consider WOF (word of fanboy) has no credibility or influence.

How will Frontier respond to that stuff? Star Citizen is in earlier development and still getting so much attention with conventions for fans and with frequent cinematic trailers.

Such as: Star Citizen - Your New Hangar!, Star Citizen - Murray Cup Trailer, RSI Constellation Fly-Around Roberts Space Industries Constellation Commercial.

Frontier doesn't release enough cinematic trailers to promote Elite Dangerous. There should be an Elite convention for fans.

I would rather see more game features added than some cinematic that you watch once and forget about. Fortunately Frontier is concentrating on the most important - delivering the game. If it's good, the sales will come. Also, I find that cinematics often set the wrong expectations and lead to huge disappointments.

Feels like a waste of dev time and money but hey, need to keep the juices flowing I suppose.

Why should they respond? Frontier has a game that speaks for itself. Just look at the occulus rift reactions and you know that something special is going on.

Only with no content you need to be a hooker leaning on a street lamp, begging for more cash
Oh and they stop the stream to early. This guy performed on stage: Reality

Frontier responds with actual gameplay instead of making trailers that show a gameplay experience that you'll never actually manage to experience in game.

SC trailers are like those pictures of mcdonalds food.

That's kind of true. I can imagine some space-game n00b being told by his friend about this completely awesome game d00d and seeing all that cinematic glory.

Salivating, he watches more and more cinematics - drools at the sight of the ship models, craves yet one more trailer - then decides "what the hell!" and whaps out his credit card to plonk for a racer. A really nice one!

He downloads, he installs, he salivates some more, he logs on, and BEHOLD!

"Pew pew pew brrrr brrrr pew pew! You have left the gameplay area."

Still visibly shaken, he gingerly gets up and goes to McDonalds. A Big Mac will make it all go away.

:D

The thing is Elite is STILL being overshadowed by a game that is much earlier in development. Frontier should do more to show off Elite to gamers and the media. I guess Gamescom was a suitable platform to do that.

LOL. And we all know it to be so true.

Don't really want to fuel this thread but go here:

http://www.gamespot.com/gamespot-fifty/

Then keep in mind that this is Gamespot we are talking about.

Elite is on 17th place (and have steadily been climbing since E3)...Star Citizen isn't even on the list. ;)

Personally I don't even want cinematic trailers...just build it and they will come. And that goes for both games! :)
