The Star Citizen Thread V2.0

Regarding the loading screen discussion in the last page, here is a little feedback.

Both games have the same goals in that department. The plan here is to use mechanics to obfuscate loading of assets, multiplayer syncing and instance hops in a way that the outcome for the player is a seamless, uninterrupted experience.

For example, ED uses a hyperspace jump sequence to hide a couple of things when the player is moving from one star system to the other. When the jump happens, the game calculates the new skybox on the fly with correct star positions, loads the celestial objects at their correct orbital phases according to the central server, moves to a new player instance and finally brings out the ship in a semi-random location at a set distance from the star. The result is a (almost, there are some small freezing bugs in the sequence right now) seamless end user experience, taking him from one star system to the other without breaking the immersion.

Sc has the same goals and will use similar sequences and tricks to preserve player immersion and gameplay continuity. ;)

For those wondering why CIG would give out a free pass at this stage, well there is a simple answer. The 0.9 patch was supposed to be out last Friday, this means that people would have been playing the new patch not the old stuff. It would have given a lot more publicity what with the hype of the racing and everything. Kinda a good indicator that the so called "internal dates" are anything but, like most of us expected.

I think this whole discussion has been derailed and is going off-track.

There's three ways of doing a transition between star systems, and from space to the planet:

1) Loading screen
2) Cinematic
3) Seamless transition with full player control

also, we have four basic transition scenarios

a) Between star systems
b) Between planets of the same system
c) Between space and planetary flight
d) Between flying your ship and walking around.

What we know for a fact is that Elite Dangerous has a cinematic for hyperspace between star systems, and it's seamless between planets of a system. We know for a fact that previous versions of Elite have demonstrated a completely player-controlled planetfall and atmospheric flight. We know for a fact that Star Citizen's Arena Commander has just basic loading screens right now.

Everything else, regardless of whether that's about ED or SC, is pure speculation or based on yet-unfulfilled promises.

There's zero point in trying to debate that a cinematic, which you can just sit back and watch, is "as immersive as" full player control. It is not. For stuff like Hyperspace between star systems, that's probably not a big deal. For planetfall it is an important item, at least for me personally. This may or may not be different for you personally.

seamless? then they´d better fix it soon cause in multiplayer I´m hanging and shaking in the cockpit hyperspace loading screen up to 20 seconds before getting out of it.
Don´t care if SC will have it more seamless or not, but being stuck looks definitely worse than an old fashioned nice loading bar

I agree.
However that would make arguing anything about SC quite hard, since most of the features are "CR said so".
Elite has it's share of it too, but at least you have more pragmatic evidence for some of it's features.

He was talking about hyperspace jumps, you are talking about entering/exiting supercruise. Hyperspace jumps in ED is a seamless "animation", going in and out of supercruise obviously requires more work by the devs, but then they have already said several times that it is very much placeholder at the moment.

Aaah, that explains it and makes perfect sense, thanks! Still though, I see some bad planning there. They should confirm the patch release date first (internally) and then give away the code for a free download. Seems that RSI need better change/release management ;)

I have a lotof respect from this forum Moderators team, especialy Jenner, its the best i've come across. It handles communication well without bans and extreme censorship.

But as i praise your effort and long mini-review from the "unimformed" side. It actually disapoints being that you have an "extra-responsability" being *international moderator* and you give such shallow review. All those "unimpressive" points you mentioned already been explained in this thread, but its normal that their now long and forgotten into the thread.

Perhaps I should have expanded on a few points and put more arguments and examples behind my statements, I agree. It was late though and I've had work in the morning. Just another thought as well: they really should extend the free play time onto weekend rather than finish it on Friday. Looking at RSI politics I think their idea was that people will play during the week, get hooked and then buy a started pack to continue playing over the weekend. I really can't see any other reason why to cease free demo on Friday, when most of the people will have lots of time during the weekend to fully appreciate the demo...

Hangar : its old build, new hangar comming next patch, we hope more optimized, also when you activate the display UP you have to press TAB to activate the cursor and you have to drag your ship to the holo space to interact with it, its not explained so you cant guess ;) , you can skipp all that by just pressing Esc and "Enter Arena Commander" to fly directly.

Nice, thanks for the explanation! I might give a quick go tonight again before uninstalling.

Laying down and chilling is a bed so you can log off in space and not wander arround, i guess its the ability live in your ship and not needing to go and log off in a planet / asteroid base somewhere.

That's really cool idea, I like that! It definitely adds to immersion, as it gives player the impression they're simply going to bed before logging off. Well done here, RSI!

Basicaly you got the worst looking and the worst playable ship in terms of handling and design/looks, the mighty Aurora:

But thats on purpose, CGI wouldnt want to spoil you with the:

or the 300i:

Fair enough, but to me Elite starter ship looks much better than SC starter ship. Also, I've actually had a look at other ships on SC website and still, I am not a big fan of the designs. That's a subjective opinion though, so let's not discuss that, no point really.

No need to explain for the 1000x time why the initial scope was delayed, has been written and discussed here for some lenght now.

Yeah, I've seen someone mentioned that RSI had to start from scratch. Fair enough I guess, I understand now. However - I really think they lack development focus. If they redirected the resource they've spent on Hangar module to Arena Commander and developed only that part of the game it could've been better probably. Or vice versa, whatever. Just focus on one thing. You're a new company, you have lots of pledgers' money, show everyone that you can spend them wisely...

If your just interested in playing the game and not much about what it is about or its development youll be winning onthe long run, cause everything will be new to you and youl have better entertainement value, so kudos and thanks for the time/effort of writting about your experience.

No worries. I was wondering for quite some time about supporting Star Citizen, but decided against it after a while, for a few reasons. Now I think it was a good decision. I will wait and see what this project evolves into and I really hope it will be a great game!

The more space sims the better for us - players :)

You can gloat your size and money all you want, it's what you produce with it that counts :)

Good things are on the way. We don't get to see everything. Read the monthly report every month to know what they are working on. I am confident SC will be a good game in the end. It's all downhill from now on imo.

Whilst I'd agree they do have a lot of things planned - it's far too early to assume it will all come together and work in a way that people enjoy.

I'm no expert but it seems to me the network is the big issue - for ED too - and that appears to be fiendishly complicated to get right. And SC have still got to get 64 bit going which according to people that seem to know isn't trivial.

Calling it as "all downhill" at this stage seems unrealistic...

With the amount of stuff that will come out and be shown it is completely downhill from a alpha perspective. I think the most troubled period of Star Citizen was the wait from January 2014 until Pax East. Now that we have a playable module they just improve and add stuff to that while other parts of the game are being built up and slowly phased out.

I'll hit this post up in December to see how far SC did come from today until December. We can do like a time capsule. Would be sweet.

That is most certainly true. This is annoying as hell (no name pun intended) and is something they need to fix. However, even during that "hang", you can look around and basically operate the game. I completely agree that this is something that needs to be improved.

As do I. Regarding both games. Alas, the Frontier guys have this to lend their plans a considerable amount of credibility:

(TLDR: They did seamless landing on planets before)
