It's just, you know, i have gone through the last 30 years with Elite ...
Elite was amazing, but most people don't got it because they only looked at graphics and didn't appreciate the stonish 3D gaphics and gameplay of Elite.
Then came WingCommander ... i played it too, but i never was so impressed by it as others, since i preferred the accurate 3D gaphics over the jerky bitmap-ships of WC. Already then i had that feeling that the developers of WC are somehow cheating.
And now comes ED and SC! It's like the final competition of this long fight between two philosophies:
- DB being very honest about everything which reflects in the current state of developement of ED
- CR being a bit a beguiler trying to get the most hype out of the weakest developement.
Elite is the father of all space simulation and it's a shame that DB doesn't get the attention he deserves compared to CR. But i guess this is like in real life where the loudest one always steals the show.
Edit:
DB was the reason why i studied computer science - he really is the godfather of 3D space simulation!
Now I think I understand your perspective better.
It just happens that Chris Roberts is a flamboyant showman whilst David Braben is more a reserved achiever. Both are good at what they do, one just naturally gains more attention because he is louder.
The comparison between the Wing Commander series and the Elite series is not even close in my opinion.
I played Wing Commander 1 and 3 on the 3DO and liked both of them. Yet both were just games along with a bunch of others. Elite on the other hand always stood out as a pioneer because it truly broke new ground in relation to being an open world. It wasn't just another game to me, it was captivating.
In Wing Commander you were in a movie. In Elite you were in a ship a universe.
Star Citizen is simply a project which is trying to incorporate the openness of Elite by adding a lot of different components. FPS + PU just to name two.
Elite: Dangerous is really just expanding on what it already did. Bringing it to the next level so to speak.
I reckon it is best just to enjoy the show and not get hung up on the showman ship or who is more popular than who.
I played a game called Tribes 2 for years. In my opinion it was and still is the best team based multiplayer game ever made due to the depth of strategy and the sheer variety of tactics. It was one of the first games to have competitive matches casted, first via audio (shoutcasts) and later with video ala T2TV. This was over a decade before Twitch and eSports.

Yet few people know about Tribes and the phenomenon that it truly was (both Tribes 1 and Tribes 2). It has been relegated to the dust bin of history, a game before its time. Too complicated in its mechanics for the casual player weaned on Call of Duty and the like. It had a learning curve which would immediately put off the impatient and in the microwave generation that is just not good.

Yet that is just how things are. The marketing pezazz of Chris Roberts will leave David Braben in the shadow yet the solid quality of Elite still be around and we'll know about it (along with many others I am sure).
