Holly smeg! Are they really donig this!? :S:mad:

Well, people are begging for them. I don't how well SC will turn out, but their marketing campaign will be taught at colleges in the years to come. They've managed to trigger something in people's reptile part of the brain that makes them beg for a $200 imaginary space ship while at the same time wrinkling their nose in disgust at a $30 expansion that doubles the gameplay (we've had a discussion like that in the SC forums with a guy who had spent $1500 on ships saying he didn't feel comfortable with $30 expansions).

I'm no stranger to it either. Back in last October/November I lacked any hobby and had some disposable income so talking/getting information about the ships had become my actual hobby instead of the game.

The whole illusion broke when I got into the Elite beta and saw how temporary a ship is and how much of a non-issue i is to upgrade to better ships. It also taught me that getting a bigger ship doesn't mean you'll have more fun. Went back to the Cobra from the Anaconda because I just liked it more.

Provided that SC has a relaxed progression like they've been saying it will and doesn't turn into a Korean grinder MMO, there will be a lot of people who will feel deflated once they realize that their $200 space ship is just a tiny game asset that anyone can get their hands on with a week of grinding or a month of relaxed gameplay.

I think you're right about the marketing - the other piece of the puzzle was of course the existing customer base from the WC and other previous franchises - without those fans buying in so heavily the marketing probably wouldn't have had the same impact. But of course they did and the rest is marketing history in the making...

If SC should become a success and CIG are doing a lot of money and earning ships ingame would be quite easy to do for players, THEN i think it would be fair to reimburse all those who paid high prices for their SC ships.
If SC will not become a success, well then i think the money is simply lost.
Just thinking ...

Why on earth did they set the racing game inside an atmosphere whilst still using the space based flight mechanics??:S

It doesn't look like atmospheric flight in the user vids - there's one linked up thread where it looks like as soon as the ship clears one gate it just points in the direction of the next gate and straight lines it to the next (avoiding and structures on the way).

It's okay, that's just the intelligent flight system compensating for the atmosphere and gravity to make it feel like space flight. *shifty eyes*

You know, I can dig that. I don't mind a little handwavium here and there. It just has to be fun. Which it's not, sadly.

Concept sales are selling of a virtual item that doesn't exist yet. An idea for a spaceship, but nothing has been modelled, nothing competed, and there is no-in-game asset. Pretty much a promise. Selling a promise that they will get around some time to finishing.

Which is effectively what they've been doing since kickstarter (same as all projects).

Is this some dastardly re-branding of ship sales exercise?

:D

So do the concept sales work on the basis of judging demand for a new design. If demand is high enough then the concept is turned into a (virtual) ship? If demand isn't high enough then any money is paid back?

If so, then it seems a bit like buying a concept car at a motor show, without the opportunity to take it for a test drive and get a feel for its performance. Basically, buying something based on what it looks like.

Yeah - it's terrible.

I've seen players stop in mid air and just float there. It also has the same 'drift' you get when in space.

If they didn't have a atmospheric flight model, it's strange they didn't create a race track in space instead.

Probably they wanted something new and shiny to push the racing ship sales and create more hype.

I don't really think you can compare both games:

The game on your link looks much faster and much more fun to play! ;)

Sounds only reasonable...

New post from Ben.

Hey guys! After working through the weekend following up on Arena Commander 0.9 issues, we’re hoping it’s going to be a quiet week in Star Citizenville*. Here’s the current plan for the week’s posts, which is always subject to change!

In terms of game content, we’re pursuing a number of different AC fixes, particularly relating to control schemes. That may take the form of multiple smaller patches, or one larger one for 13.1 (which will include customizable controls) but at this time we aren't able to say whether any of it will happen this week.

By the way, I'd like to open up this thread for suggestions: what would YOU like to see in the Comm-Link going forward?

Monday 9/15 – 10 for the Chairman**
Tuesday 9/16 – Galactic Guide, Lore Post: News Update
Wednesday 9/17 – Fan Spotlight
Thursday 9/18 – Around the Verse, Lore Post: Lore Builder Returns!
Friday 9/19 – Concept Sale Plans, PAX Australia Tickets

* - Star Citizenville, coming soon to Facebook.
** - Or should I say BEN FOR THE CHAIRMAN? Because I’m in this week’s episode.

On planet racing coming soon in your Arena Commander on planet add-on. Race across Mars in your Rover GLS.

Once some of the FPS in place this makes logical sense. Instead of ship sales it will be vehicle sales, Pod Racers.

Only time will tell whether what is meant as a joke post is actually reality.
