Is there some way to impart inertia (or acceleration if you will) from the ship's movement, including collisions, to a player avatar walking inside the ship? The accelerations are so incredibly high (like they are in Elite, to be fair) that maybe it would make multicrew gameplay impossible anyway. Still, would it in theory be possible for a person riding a space ship (inside the ship's physics grid) to feel the acceleration of the ship (which is in the larger scene's physics grid)?

No, because you can't "feel" such acceleration under normal circumstances anyway.

But don't take my word for it though; Ben's going to come theory-craft it for you. Be patient.

My go-to comparisons are Daikatana and Freelancer.

Those came out, so that's pretty unfair. :D

But I suppose… Freelancer became a pretty decent game once Chris was no longer ruining it. Hell, even Daikatana had some actual potential but the umpteen engine changes and some of the silly production snafus (recording the wrong name for the protagonist and laughably large projectile textures being famous examples) just meant they ran out of time and were overtaken by the competition.

So for a $137 million project that likes to tout "openness", it's interesting that since 2.6 was released to Evocati yesterday, backers have no clue what's in it. Particularly it doesn't contain Star Marine; and CIG never even mentioned it.

Meanwhile, some backers are spreading false rumors that it is released.....just because they claim to have seen some file assets in the download. :D

It doesn't? Well, here you go.

*Mod hat off

So, I have seen some conflicting information around.

Has this first 2.6 build released for evocati included a playable (as in playable since release of this first build) Star Marine module? Or not?

I have access to an Evocati account; as do two of my close sources. Star Marine is 100% NOT in this build. I said so yesterday. EVERY SINGLE ONE of my CIG/RSI sources have also confirmed it.

There is no confusion. There is no rumor. It's not in it.

When in doubt, ask Ben Parry.

What False rumors i am playing it, guess your ignorance shines true once again.. and your so called sources are proven wrong also again..

Hilarious. Like truly hilarious.

When did you play it?

How did you access it?

When did you update?

Did they push it today?

Rolls eyes (at mad backers).
Until it appears on my launcher client for download, there is *nothing* as far as I am concerned.
Once it does appear, then I can see for myself.

Is this attitude of mine so unusual?

Ninja'd, but Oh my.........

Edit: I don't give a ripe garlic fart about Star Marine, all I'm interested in is the changes to the flight model - still, after all the fuss about Star Marine, this is a bit of a corker!

If the ship you're walking around on pitches hard enough to red-out the pilot, you'd expect unrestrained passengers to be pancaked on the ceiling, not walking around as if nothing happened. Of course there's also artificial gravity, but if the pilot is experiencing inertial effects, so should the passengers. As far as I can tell it's the trade-off of the much-lauded local physics grids, which are less about simulating physical forces in a coherent, fidelitous way and more about making the computational complexity manageable.

The sensible thing would of course be to not have the pilot feel any inertial effects, but then, this is a game where you can get a redout by spinning out in your golf cart, so they've pretty firmly decided to not be even remotely realistic with any of it.

If that is true, then how come this is not a thing in the ususal SC channels? Why would it be kept hidden? NDA or not.

Right. Which is why I said you can't feel it now under normal circumstances in the game anyway, since it's not implemented. In the current multi-crew ships, you don't feel any of those effects while flying it. So there's no reason for the other crew/passengers to feel it either.

And the "local physics grid" is more about character movement modeling inside the ship.

Gee willikers, I thought things were winding down!
Tonight, I'm off to play boardgames with my mum, though, so The Discourse will have to wait until tomorrow.

WRT Star Marine, contents of evocati builds are NDA'd, but also I don't work in CS, QA or production, so why would I know?

WRT the physics, I'm happy to unpack what I was getting at if it's of interest to anyone besides Derek. Still SC relevant as it's about local physics grids. Say the word and I'll bust out the wall o'text.

Maybe because you can't prove a negative?

Also, as I've said to all backers, why not just ask CIG? How hard is that?

It is irrelevant what some people choose to believe; you simply can't change the facts.

ps: Ask Ben.

Oh wow. Really. Coming from a dev that has spent many many pages discussing other aspects of the game... Prolly as good as a confirmation SM is not in in this build, tbh. Gobsmacked if true.

Trying to get a grasp on what's going on with SC is about as much good use of your time as, I dunno :

Really not the case. I could talk about a bunch of things related to tech that Star Marine uses, but I don't really pay attention to what gets switched on or off for a specific test build. I only even know the dates for them if I'm likely to hold up the release, I actually thought this one was out in a week or so.

With respect, you are seriously telling us that you do not have a say at all about which part of your hard work goes into a specific test build or not. And therefore that any build related deadlines for delivery of your work, or their priorities, are in essence invisible/irrelevant to you unless in the critical path?

Actually it makes perfect sense that Ben wouldn't know that. He's an engine dev - not a project manager or team lead.

Exactly how far down in the food chain one has to be to NOT know (or be consulted about) that your work goes into a the frikking first ever Star Marine playable build, Jenner?
