Not sure if this has already been mentioned here, but MedicineHut over on the SA Star Citizen forum presented a bit of very interesting (and what should be very worrying to the mega CIG defenders) analysis of the player numbers for the revamped flight model in Arena Commander and the arrival of Star Marine....

[/h] Interesting analysis posted in that thread: https://forums.robertsspaceindustri...Comment_7435907

Only 6200 backers have played 2.6 Arena Commander Battle Royal mode (most popular). Only 480 of them for more than 2 hours and only 140 of them more than 6 hours so far.

So much for the greatness of the revamped flight model.

Star Marine novelty means 64000 players have tried Last Stand mode of which 5100 have played for more than 2 hours and barely 1000 have played more than 6 hours.

Given MoMA/Toast claims on his time in Star Marine he surely must be top 1% percentile in time played in the community. Way to go Toast. You are one committed citizen, friend.

If it is sponsored or paid for by CIG/RSI (and there's no evidence that it is), then it looks like an underhand ploy to mislead backers. If it isn't be CIG/RSI, then what on Earth motivated someone to invent a website just to post one original article?

Careful, exposing astroturfing might be called "doxing" by the faithful ;)

I'd be curious what the official spin is on this - could a certain CMDR in this thread help I wonder?

Are there really only 70,000 real backers actually taking part in the game, rather than the 1.7million claimed? That's a pretty vast gap

Wanna place bets on how quickly the thread those stats came from gets booted into Katamari Hell so that "no one would ever know" about what those figures implied?

I still can't see how they will balance earning ships in game and give those who have bought ships for cash the feeling that they have gotten value for money.

SC players that have purchased ships for cash are completely aware that one day, new players will be able to earn their way into that same ship. There's no need for a balance pass to make people feel like they got "proper value".

Maybe it's easy to say that these people that bought all these ships will be happy to see freshers earning the same ships in a few hours play. On the converse will those same freshers be happy to have to play for days or weeks of in game play to earn ships?

You need to remember that SC's gameplay isn't intended to be a complete mirror of Elite. In one key way, it's quite different. In Elite, a basic theme is "You're a solo/single pilot in the galaxy." In SC, this isn't the theme; rather, you're a member of a population (or crew, if you like). You can be a solo hunter/trader/whatever in SC, but it's not your only option.

Consider large ships.

In Elite, there's no difference in owning/piloting a Corvette vs a Sidewinder. Certainly the Vette has more weps, cargo, slots, etc (and more costly upkeep), but when you're sitting in the cockpit - you can (and do) perform all the same things you could in a Sidewinder with about the same efficiency.

In SC, there is a very intended difference in both the ownership and usage of a large ship beyond costs and how hard it is to dock. Multicrew is already in the game. There are turrets to man, there are support stations. You might split the duties of pilot vs engineer vs communications, for example. And of course, you can have a complete boarding party aboard.

The way this impacts the playerbase, is that there's a reason for things like an Org/Corp to exist. If you have a capital ship, you NEED 6-12 people to make it a really effective ship. (So you're trying to recruit members.) On the other side, this means you don't have to grind for 6 months to earn one. (So there's an incentive to join.) You can pool your funds, and the Org can acquire one that way. Orgs can also distribute earnings among members, based on rank, participation, etc. It's a much more social goal based-game in this manner, vs "1 guy in a ship" as it is in Elite.

This doesn't just apply to capital ships. We have nearly 50 players in our org. If at some point we have a couple of large ships crewed - well, all those fighters everyone owns aren't just collecting dust in a hanger. We can easily take members who may only only a starter ship, and say "Oh, you're flying escort? Take one of the big fighters out." So you can participate as you'd like, without grinding forever.

Again, you can play the "lone pilot" role in SC. But that's not the ONLY role available. So you have to consider other matters when wondering if SC players will feel "value vs money wasted" in the future.

Really? Just look at the kvetching that goes on in the Elite forums over people "exploiting" their way to an Anaconda in a week where as "I had to put real work and grind in for mine."

You think adding real world money, hundreds of dollars, into the equation isn't going to result in the same or worse kinds of complaining?

.....oh.

I'm assuming that this is a side-affect of the single 1st/3rd player modelling and 1st player camera.

[blah]

Sorry, am I missing something? On mobile, I see a dude running with a grenade. Odd choice, but not buggy/glitchy?

Arm is static & body rolls with movement in relation to camera making upper arm glitch in & out of shoulder (or look weirdly jointed).

What's the mechanism like for that? In the game can an Org buy a ship now and who decides who gets to use it?

I'm just wondering if you're talking about actual features or dreaming of features.

Multi-crew is coming to Elite in 2.3. Also can't wait to see a few of these multi-crew ships perform in the same instance in SC, without the whole thing falling over. [big grin]

It's called "Theory Crafting" for a reason Frosty... something CIG Ultra backers* are very good at doing.

Now, ask them to produce the *official* documentation from CIG themselves where they outline the details of how such a system would work... I'm sure they'll provide ample amounts of *evidence* to back up the claims....

*i.e those backers who are in up to their necks in jpeg ship debt

I have to take issue with this blatant FUD and misinformation, it's thousands not hundreds of dollars.
