*Mod hat off

Unless I am mistaken, DU has got 565,000 USD successfully financed at Kickstarter. And Infinity Battlescape barely around 330,000 USD.

I think it is more a matter of scope control, access to skill and management rather than budget to be honest. The Battlescape guys seem to be running a tight ship so far and look like they have set up a very disciplined shop although you can tell it is stretched and a couple wrong decisions can probably derail the whole thing. DU in the other hand seem to be practicing the same bombastic marketing and promises that we can see in SC, at their scale (DU´s main first dev update after the kickstarter was about how to pledge more money...) and I have many more doubts about that one.

Godspeed to both.

Yeah, that's part of the point that I was making. 2 million for such a "feature" when you have teams making entire "games" out of something like that.

Come on, if that would have been posted in the ED Hardware section everyone would cheer, wouldn't we? I think it's cool. Just sad that so much real talent wasted for such a mess of not-a-game.

There's nothing "cool" about exposed groin level flimsy looking home-made hydraulics.

The craziest ED thing I've seen is a chair with attached joystick/throttle mounts, I'm currently sitting in it with my feet up. They can be easily removed whenever Mrs Stigbob informs me the "geek platforms" must be hidden because of imminent guests and they double as drink/snack holders*. I made them out of a shelf offcut, bits of doweling and some screws total cost less than 75p.

*admittedly unreliable for drinks when transitioning from upright to reclined.

Who's not cheering? I think it's brilliant. I'd love a chair like that.

I don't bash everything SC - credit where it is due and all that.

At least 3 screens or VR, a heater, fan, lights and a drinks mixer :D

I thought he was building it for VR... for Star Citizen... ahh! I think I can see a flaw in his plan.

DU is early access at the moment (I have it) - it's quite fun to play, full launch is set for Q1/Q2 2017 with a full SP campaign and other bits.
What seems to have happened is that after the rush of initial interest, backers have gone into hibernation to wait for full release - which is a bit of a problem as not many folks are out there showcasing the game in youtube and social media to help generate more interest. DU has a very small team, 6 permanent + 4 contractors - the progress made considering that is rather good IMHO. If you have DU early access - get back into it, and tell your friends!!!

Sorry, off topic, but a fair comparison considering Wingman & Rob(Designopotamus) used to be at CIG, and in 18 months, with very few staff and a fraction of the cash, they have a really fun and playable alpha/early access game.

Wait, Dual Universe is supposed to have a single-player campaign?

It's not just DU facing stuff like that. Most indie games, especially those in development - including my LoD game - face this sort of thing. It's mostly due to the whole stigma now associated with Early Access games, much like with F2P.

e.g. take a look at the Steam metrics for Angels Fall First, another combined arms type Early Access game with decent graphics and gameplay, but no player base to speak of. That one took has been in dev for quite some time, and started out as a UE3 mod. Quote from their Sept bulletin:

To combat the low online population plaguing the Early Access version even further we’ll do free/discount weekends and similar events around the 1.0 release. Despite keeping the game a bit under the radar so far we did get in contact with a lot of lovely people and intend to gather as many players as possible for the release. Being an indie title we obviously can’t expect to retain a massive online population after the initial around-release influx but we’d be happy to keep at least 2 full servers going. We’ve done massive optimizations to the netcode of the game to make sure the situation from around the Early Access release doesn’t repeat itself and the new players don’t bounce off a badly running server.

We also have plans for adding a “Quick play” option to the game which will connect you to the most suitable server instantly - we feel like a lot of potential players look at the server browser, see the low playercounts and quit, which subsequently contributes to even lower playercount.

So, which end of the stick have I got again? That's right, the wrong end :D

DU - I did not read the context properly and thought it was Descent Underground rather than Dual Universe

It's funny, it seems the best way to keep interest up (and money coming in) is to hype like hell, sell concepts for cash, and not actually release anything vaguely playable - just keep teasing and promising......

I think you may have hit on something there... ;)

If that was an ED player - they would probably have included a screen...

VR is a thing, not a thing for SC but it is a thing. The chair is a cool idea and the work and knowledge necessary to build that thing and get it to work even in its currently limited capacity is very cool. Not only does the guy have the knowledge to build that thing but the drive to do it. Its only sad because its for a game that will never happen.

Duel Universe is in early access? It has a solo campaign?

Edit: Just read the rest of the posts. so ignore this one.

Nope - I got myself confused with Desent Underground.

I ended up not backing Decent Underground, I didn't like how it started as a MOBA and then changed directions in the middle of the kickstarter in order to get more funds. Or that they wanted $30 for a F2P modeled game. I ended up getting it for Free from some massive give away some time ago (something like 5k free codes handed out). Tried it a few times but have not seen a reason to give it another go (still have it installed and updated), perhaps I will give it another try sometime soon. Right now I am having way too much fun with Titanfall 2, the SP is amazing, perhaps the best FPS one I have ever played. I really love all the mechanics they throw in and the throw back to old platformers.

It's in a pretty good place at the moment, stable and lots of stuff has been added since you last had a go - but, I'd say wait for the next update, as the HUD is getting re-vamped and quite a few other things are getting improved - probably will be another update before year end.
And yes, Titanfall 2 is really good - enjoying that myself :)

Oh no, someone took immersion and realism to a whole new level, and it's not CR !!

What's he gonna do now? Ste...I mean, borrow some of that tech ?
A whole new world of milking opportunities open with aging&dying mechanics!

My wife looked at backing that game at Kickstart until some of their curious P2W design decisions came out... Back enough at KS and you can be Duke of a Province and everyone will be forced to swear fealty to you and other such oddities.

See, there is the problem. A true nerd/geek doesn't have guests. :p

Anyone else look at that and immediately think it's a Darwin award waiting to happen ?.

It's cool but not new, been around for awhile, just didn't make into production. but again it's cool and would be fun to try.

I saw something similar 3.5 years ago, so nothing new.
