Again, I think the big test will be when backers play with/against one another across geographic locations, and not in the same room.

To be fair, they acknowledge the netcode isn't so good yet and the plan is to make it good for 3.0. And i think that will be the biggest acid test for them, because without decent working netcode it will get a lot of flack no matter how good the other features are.

So all in all, two things happened: they found the Gantt chart button in MS project (but couldn't quite use it to build a proper Gantt chart), and they showed off a thoroughly dull, derivative, and shortcut-filled FPS (as if they couldn't quite use an FPS engine to build a proper FPS).

Well, I'm convinced. :D

Where was the Gnatt chart, I was mostly listening whilst running Sight Seeing tours in my Orca

*edit*

Oh the projected timeline in the Newsletter?

Yes. It seems to be a recurring theme with this project: “we have x but couldn't quite x'”, where x' is something that x is suppose to do or make easy. Always so close, yet so far away. :D

Given SC's development is already meant to be open, doesn't this make it the most widely open development ever of the world now?

A development so transparent progress is perceived as barely visible

Oh I more meant when a Gnatt chart was mentioned, I expect something a little different, but it is for the public so

Sorry did they actually show some Squadron 42 gameplay last night? I was delving in/out of the livestream and got the impression they didn't!?

I do too: more something like a retro planning to see what's been done and what's planned for the remaining accordingly to that.

This chart is not very different from the ETAs they gave, missed and told they won't do anymore. Haha...

Thanks guys, I don't need to watch the video myself - the reaction from the regulars here tells me all I need to know.
TL;DR for me is that CIG plan to release 2.6 by Dec 8th - which I think means we may get it before year end, but who knows?
Once it is released, I will download and have a go for myself.
As for the reactions to SM, it may look a bit "meh" on video, but until you actually play it, get a feel for moving around, aiming, shooting etc, it's very difficult to judge if it is a good starting platform from which good gameplay can be made (or perhaps it is just "meh") - same goes for the FM changes (which I am most keen to try out). So, until I can try this stuff out, then judgement will be held back - I am not optimistic I expect to be dissappointed, I hope to be pleased, perhaps even impressed - but it's down to CIG to get this stuff out.

It will be delayed of course, those dates doesn't colerate with other information and experience. They didn't promise release date, just thought showing their *intent* will be enough for people not to lynch them.

Yeah, it is basically "we are trying hard to hit release dates, but they just slip away, no evil intending there, just....incompetence?" way of showing it. They wouldn't need to show this if they would know for sure. They don't.

Also this mostly confirms TheAgent...most of what he has said was confirmed.

Random notes:
- the FPS demo was running on a LAN with small team sizes. Does anyone know the expected server arrangements, or team sizes?
- 2.6 enters evocati PTU testing over the next week, but (the chart seems to imply) that none of the underlying, core, code will be anywhere near 'finished'? This testing may have a very limited effect.
- the chart starts on 10th October, the day after Citizencon. Some of the tasks "required" for 2.6 didn't start until over a week after the conference.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems more reasonable to expect this to enter 'full testing' on Dec 8th ahead of a later release.

The timeline is kinda hilarious though. It gives just about long enough for evocati testing to confirm everything is working and that's it - no time allowance seems to have been made for any serious bugs which just seems mental all considered but I suspect it'll get rolled out whatever as long as it's not wiping people's machines and turning into the devil

If that SM releases it does feel very very limited and I can't help but notice the racing and AC got released in similar poor states then just sat there - is this going the same way? I think I worked out what was so strange in the racing for me - I was expecting it to be exciting. Seeing those ships I expected snazzy smoke trails diving and twisting through the course - I expecting beautiful cloud effects and the sun casting shadows from the craft zipping past. It seems an ideal environment for the kind of finish they expect folk to believe they will build but it was still as bland as bland and lacking all the wow of their pre-renders but look - things to buy.

In retrospect the most exciting thing was seeing some of the Item 2.0 stuff working. Maybe <<USE>>'s days are numbered.
