The Star Citizen Thread v5

For fans of Jim Stirling - his movie review podcast 'Spin-off Doctors' has recently covered the great movie Wing Commander. The episodes a fun mixture of bemused confusion and tired anger.

You need:

1) Garlic cloves (not that powdered rubbish)
2) A 5lb bag of salt
3) Holy water // walk into a church and get some
4) A Silver cross // get one at a thrift store, or buy one at Walmart, then return it after the ceremony
5) A copy of the Bible // preferably the St. James version; none of that fake crap they're selling at Walmart
6) Print this Catholic church approved Excorcism chant.

Steps:

1) Strip down to your undies
2) Hang the garlic around your neck with a string
3) Create a circle of salt in an open space big enough to encircle you and your computer
4) Put the computer in the circle
5) Drop some Holy water on top of the computer case; and a few drops in the middle of your head
6) Put the Bible somewhere in the circle, and the cross on top of it
7) Chant the passage you printed out, at least five times

If all goes well, you can put your clothes back on, reconnect the computer, and then delete the Star Citizen installation folder. Given the size (31+ GB), the room may start to shake as long as the delete dialog is being displayed as it struggles to delete the vile crap from your computer. Try not to panic. Continue chanting during this part if things get hairy.

When the delete dialog is completed, you are ready for the most harrowing part yet.

Take a sip of the Holy water; just to be sure.

Empty the Recycle Bin. This is a complete purge of the vile creature lurking within; so there will be some resistance from the dark forces within. You may even see some of those croberts memes taking longer than normal to be expunged; don't worry about it because right now you are fighting for the very soul of your computer as well as your bank account.

If all goes well, and you didn't bite off your tongue during this ordeal, you're in the clear.

Go get a refund.

"You must spread some reputation around..." :/

Who?

Elite fans or SC fans?

Either way, if that is a planned avatar creator it leans a lot towards Black Desert Online in the detail department.

I'm surprised you even need to ask ;) One game puts their options into beta testing with an imminent release, the other suddenly decides to show off what they are doing, to be released at an undetermined date...

It certainly looks good although I can't help but feel it's a bit overkill.

Oh, and this is kind of relevant
The 3-Lateral guy said he expects to roll the tech out within 2 years.

Its another Tech from SC to create more hype, I just can remind its not in the game now and probably we will not see this in game anytime soon(tm)...maybe only in 2018...

As I understood it isn't even that. Its using data from SC (and CR is now in the reddit thread being hailed as the messiah of gaming for agreeing to share that data with the guys who did the presentation ????).

And the timing is uncanny... why did the unreal guys decide to do this at this point? Surely there were not paid a bunch of cash by CR to do it because CIG themselves can't show anything new (since they did show off face generation before, can't trot out the same old stuff if there is nothing new to show right? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9O_PCOJ_ss ).

Interesting its unreal rather than crytek.

Whatever: one team with [not yet implemented] paid middleware, the other with proprietary tech (am I right?)... I know who my winner is for this game.

Indeed, there was also this bit that highlights the motive
The presenter also verbally thanked CIG for letting them demo this now rather than "6 months" later.

Perhaps it's just me but it does seem a bit desperate.

Yeah, it's not CIG's code, and it's not in CryEngine. And when you get down to it, it's just blending between fixed, pre-defined assets, there's no other modification such as "make the cheeks stick out more" or "make the nose longer". They're relatively decent models/textures (except the female ones which look horrid for some reason, maybe that's why SC doesn't have female commandos), but it's very basic customisation. Compare that with the sculpting in Eve's character creator, for example, which I think appeared before SC even started development (I know, it's hard to imagine a time that long ago). Never mind something like Black Desert Online.

I'm guessing CIG let them use their models in the hope that people on reddit/spectrum would make a false connection between the demo and star citizen in their minds, and then buy an Idris.

Have to rep you here for the sheer effort. A very entertaining read.

I've said this a few times now but I got my 305 dolla refunded summer last year thanks to your articles on the subject and help from other successful folk up to that time. Once again many thanks for the help. I'm glad I'm out but sad it came to that.

What Daddy does so do genuine Croberts....

Not easy to walk in the masters boots is it :D

It would not surprise me if that is the tech they use right now to create avatars and characters for SQ42 so streamlining it to create avatars in the PU would not be a stretch. So it's hardly a "sudden" show off. And we have seen them show how they create and model characters before, only difference is that it was mostly for touching up performance captured characters.

And while I do think the creation tools for the Commanders beta felt a bit...limited the rate BDO and perhaps SC does it goes the opposite way in facial detail.

Yeah we have seen stuff before, no disagreement there but this coming out a couple of days after the other game and being shown 6 months early hints at a few things.

It's certainly more than coincidental as well. We had pupil to planet one day after Horizons' release (iirc), alien languages very soon after Thargoids interdiction, character faces one or two days after character creation. There's definitely an attempt at thunder stealing or one-upping on the competition.

It's not a bad thing although I do wish CIG's stuff was in game rather than a mockup or a talk of how things are hopefully going to be.

Exactly.
But I wouldn't say those were intended for thunder stealing, rather for trying to keep head above water.
