The Star Citizen Thread v9

I am a backer but at a $60ish entry level. I am not convinced the game will be a masterpiece but i am not convinced it is snake oil salespeople who will cut and run and not deliver a game either.

Remember the Freelancer development and be aware that Freelancer wasn't released because of CR it was released despite of CR.
What we're seeing right now, IMHO, is the repetition of the Freelancer devlopment e.g. permanently missed deadlines, over promising and under delivering and so on. The difference is this time there will be no Microsoft who's stepping in and saving the game by removing CR from the project. They have already delivered a MVP, it's 3.0, they have made that point in court at firefly 212's small case claim.

My concern is about the PvP side of things... (I dont PvP) and my hope is i can minimise it.
IF I CAN minimise it, then i do not care about P2W - because i wont be fiighting people to win...... and if not its only $60.

If this game releases, which I highly doubt, it will become a gankfest pretty soon and it will be pretty ugly.

The anger in this thread is so fascinating.

All over a game in alpha that most here have probably never played.

I don't get it, but then I don't understand why people join cults either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be completely fair, lots of people gave 200M$ to a bunch of guys that clearly didn't deserve them.

That is one way of looking at it. The $200 mil means little to me tho. I paid $60 (iirc at a time where there was $1.6 to the £) I will judge SC the same as other games I paid £40 on. Those who have put $10k etc in.......well it does not compute with me tbh . To each their own

Plus space legs. Because it has space legs and it's a lot of fun to use them.

Who knew getting out of your ship to pick up boxes would actually be fun? I thought it looked kind of bad at first, but wow... was I ever wrong.

If I thought picking up boxes was fun, my office wouldn't like something from Steptoe & Son

Star Citizen might be laggy, but at least it's laggy for everyone when it gets bad.

And I've seen worse lag in ED many times.

I'll, I never that summer I spent two weeks in Syria. Sure there was nothing to do, I got dysentery and was shot at every day, but it was the same for everyone.

Anyway, I'll just leave this here:

Ahh. "Legendary ganker" gets pwned by Aurora, blames lag. lol

He didn't. He was a part of the team that made WC1, SC, and WC3. He played movie director for WC4. That's it. The rest were made — completely — by other people. He got his name on the box because they used his original IP and because he green-lit them.

Put it another way: if I say “Jaws”, “Close Encounters” and “Jurassic Park”, you will probably think of Spielberg (or possibly Williams) — not Brown, Phillips, and Molen. For the vast majority of the “Chris games”, Chris is the latter, not the former (and even that is overstating what he did). Coincidentally, those three games where he was involved to any degree were plagued with cost and time overruns and ridiculous posturing and overpromising.

That's exactly how it should be, though. The likes of Braben, Roberts, Spector et al should be sitting in a cave up a mountain somewhere, dispensing pearls of wisdom to the armies of people you need to make a "AAA" game - not sitting around coding like it's 1989 or peering over someone's shoulder making pixels green.

I wouldn't mind so much if he was bringing his vast experience of modern parallel processing to the table, but for some reason that's not an option...

but The way i see it, i lost 100s of hrs and bought every one of the wing commander games, strike commander, star/freelancer and both privateer games. I enjoyed every last one.

You... enjoyed....... P...P...Pr...Priv...Privateer 2?! I... I'll... I think I'll just leave it at that or this thread will need a NSFW tag!

Weeeell… Privateer 2 was the only time any kind of creativity, vision, or originality was manifest in any of the Commander games. Didn't make the actual game any better, granted, but you can't have everything. :D

I'll grant you the artistic originality. Those weird-ass cutscenes were something different and hilariously enjoyable in a way. But pretty much everything else felt like the biggest betrayal of my gamer's life at that point. I absolutely adored Privateer/RF and was massively looking forward to a glorious successor to it when that $#$% piece of &@#$% came out.

I've been playing off and on for a couple years now, and the game has improved dramatically in that time.

Its always these general statements without specification. If going from "not being able to pick up boxes" to "picking up boxes" is a dramatic improvement to you then sure your statement is correct. Without examples or context tho its worthless to be honest especially as so many others who have followed and participated in the alpha longer then you have say the opposite. And those people have made the effort in the past to list their experiences without attacking others verbally..,..jus saying.

We ve got a few people in here who believe that there will be a game at the end of Star Citizens development. Unlike you tho they are able to admit that many things are "off" and the alpha is severely lacking right now. In short, its possible to have a discussion with them even tho they have a different believe. They dont have to refer to ridicule or "I dont care, I m rich" retorts to score points.

By your own account you are not interested in the development nor the current status of Star Citizen. I m just a little confused because you claim to know better yet admit that you dont care enough to inform yourself.....

EDIT: And have you ever actually flown an Aurora LN? I did today for the first time in Arena Commander. I immediately went and bought one for the PU afterward. Those things are awesomely agile.

The LN is one of my favorite emergent content delivery ships because most people see a "harmless" Aurora.

I've been playing off and on for a couple years now, and the game has improved dramatically in that time.

Why should I get upset about the level of funding when I contributed a small part of it myself?

Chris Roberts has always been kind of a flake afaik, but his name has been on several games I've owned and loved.

I'm not going to listen to a word the man says during development.

I don't care.

I'll always judge by the actual product rather than the hype.

I'm pretty sure there will be a game I like a lot at the end of all this.

And if not? So what?

I'm out a little bit of cash.

Even if I spend a few grand on it, I've lost more in a night of poker.

That's a very pragmatic approach, not one that some backers share for sure!

Every day I drive my Ferrari to my yacht (that's right... it's also a submarine) where I keep my multi-billion dollar gaming machine secure at a secret location somewhere in the mid-atlantic. All of my ganking is done from there, and you can't come see it unless you're in my super secret circle of international spies/bestest friends ever.

And you sir, are not.

Ahh - so you are the guy with the Immarsat IP that takes the server to 3 FPS :D

Look, if you don't believe me, go play the game and shoot greenies until your crimestat is full. Be sure to do it when the server is reasonably well populated so you get the full experience. You either go to SPK and spend several minutes defending yourself while you wait for it to clear, or you can run with it and do the mission you're going to be offered. It will be to go cause chaos in a certain location for an unspecified period of time, and it will be one of the better paying missions if you can pull it off. All the while, everyone else on the server will get a mission to take you down, with the successful hunter making about the same amount as the rampage mission paid.

You can also do criminal missions that don't involve massive chaos and raising your crimestat. Sometimes the missions won't even involve combat. If you succeed, your reputation will increase, and you will be given the opportunity to take more lucrative, but risky missions. There isn't a whole lot of variety at the moment, but it's a system, and it works quite well IMHO.

Nearly all of my aUEC in 3.2 has come from criminal activity. And I'm reasonably well outfitted, and continuing to enjoy the available activities. The armistice areas are even functional safe zones now, and Grim Hex is no longer a wild west free-for-all. Although the armistice area seems a bit smaller there.

And I never said I wasn't interested in or didn't follow development. I'm just not going to listen much to what Chris Roberts says publicly, or at least I will take everything he says with a grain of salt.

Also never said I was rich. Maybe I have money, maybe I don't.

I said I once lost a nice chunk of change in a single night of gambling.

Maybe that just gave me a different perspective on money than you have? IDK...

Nah... I'm kidding. Of course I'm rich...

I dont need to go play it myself which would involve paying for it. I rather watch videos, read reviews or player reports and ask questions. You mention "crimestat" so I assume its handled like a faction which goes up when you do specific things? Missions involving the crimestat seem to resolve around a bounty system? What consequences does a maxed out crimestat have? How do you clear it? How is this system "better" then EDs system?

Any examples for the massive improvements over the last 2 years? Are those by chance all those things that are highly debated and praised by one side and critically viewed by the other? Like Procedural generation or item 1.0?

Anyway - could someone please remind me when they first did the whole "alien languages" thing and that it was a rich, deep, lore-based actualisation of a realistic language that was developed by professionals?

Because - in their latest video - none of that has been properly developed at all :D
