The Type-8

The Kraits have had similar arms since forever, so I don't really see what's so "off" about this design.

Maybe the engines at the sides?
probably because such a design is typical of Falcon DeLacy not Lakon. The type 8's design is a departure from the Lakon design of ships.

Why should a ship manufacturer stick to only 1 design style for every ship? It's a departure from the old ships, but I don't mind.

Which doesn't exclude it from being an actual EVA airlock. -that being said i think it fairly unlikely and might just be greebling instead.

The doors and airlocks on the ships are non-functional, but if we get ship interiors then they should make it interactive.

Brand identity.

Yes they should be blow out panels so that if our ships are invaded by passengers or other intruders we can seal the bridge over pressurise the rest of the ship then blow them out into space where the PDT can deal with them.

Why do people think ship locks have something to do with ship interiors?
We already have:
1. gangways for the crew to disembark in the harbor,
2. A cargo airlock for launching drones and collecting cargo in them,
3. Fighter airlocks,
4. Airlocks for TRPs.

Why should the airlock for releasing a man in a spacesuit in outer space be associated with the ship interiors ? I don't get it.

People clutch at straws sometimes.

I think it's good that the Type 8 breaks from the "traditional Elite look".

Having a design aesthetic for your fictional world is an awesome thing, but to do it well it needs to be an intentional and well-designed. And however well or not-well designed Elite's aesthetic may be, I don't think it was really that intentional, in terms of the wedge-ships. That was due to a technological limitation at the time, and so we've ended up with an aesthetic defined by technological limitation.

I'm really happy to see Elite break free from this more, and hopefully grow to choose an intentional aesthetic, vs just be locked into an unintentional one.

I know some of the ED ships have a nod to the original game (and glad I am too) but is it fair to say the game has been beholden to them?

I mean , the eagle, the FDL/mamba, the imperial ships and the space marine mammals are all curvy ships rather than angular and the chietain looks pretty cool to me as well

note am not knocking the type 8 either

It is worth noting that all cars (at least passenger cars) are not far removed from the early 19th century. 4 wheels + engine and a slightly different body ;)

I don't think there was any tech limitation to us having the classic wedge shapes. That was just a design choice and not a bad one imo. For one thing it made the ED ships different to every other fancy jet fighter in space wannabe.
I take it we're talking about Mamba and KraitMk2.

By that logic you could say they aren't far removed from the Sumerian chariots...

Indeed our SRVs function in much the same manner.

But what does this remind you of? ;)
Not that one. This one:
lockheed-f-19-stealth-fighter-revell.jpg

It's the fictional F-19, rumored US stealth fighter from the 1980-s. Of course, later it turned out that the name was wrong (the real one was designated F-117), the shape was wrong (the real one was way more sharp-edged) and it wasn't even a fighter, but a ground attack aircraft🙃

The fictional model looks really cool, though.

Hmm. I played the F-117, but I can't remember if it was a PC or Amiga.

While by the end of the 20th century the differences in body shapes had almost vanished due to aerodynamics in part and that while there may have been lots of brands of cars they we’re all owned by only a handful of large corporations who liked to economise.

Wasn’t there another F19 kit at the time with wings?
