The UI

ive been a longtime player of Elite and its somewhat of a love hate relation at moment for me. even tho oddessey runs ok'ish.. what has been done with the UI is absolutely horrible. the carrier UI wasnt good. but changing the station UI into that was not needed and is a straight up downgrade.

is there a way to get the old UI back in Oddessey? if not, ill just go play something else that isnt headacke inducing.
and dont even get me started about the Galmap UI.

if it aint broke, dont fix it.

I can respect that people don't like the new UI, but it has gotten much better than it was during the alpha/launch. It just takes some getting used to.
for me personally its so bad, i just turn off the game. the previous UI was fast and efficient. after 3000 hours i dont want to get used to a new UI, i want to play the new stuff that i payed for.

im trying to not get too salty about it, cause i wanna love ED, like i did a few years ago..

Capital idea.

It was worse when Odyssey first launched. It ain't great, but it's a bit more manageable. Unfortunately - it is here to stay, so may as well get used to it.

I actually like the new UI. It has many features that are very useful.

I do agree that the old UI was very efficient but the new UI does things that the old UI just could not do.

And I don't necessarily mean any particular screen but the UI as a whole is much more useful.

I'm struggling to think of a use case where the new one does something that the old one cannot, can you give some examples? Obviously I appreciate that odyssey specific content is only handled by the new one.

If the new one eventually becomes the only option I'll continue to use it, but I certainly hope the eventual re-merging is managed by someone that acknowledges the poor feedback the new ones have received.

I say....

Gal map search w/expansion of partials, list of possible results and click-ability alone is probably enough. I can't count high enough to even begin to catalog how many times I've typed the wrong name into the old search in the gal map.

The ability to have favorite bookmarks, the ability to get to my favorite bookmarks with a simple hat switch left motion.

The ability on the sys map to filter on POIs and target them without having to zoom into the body and rotate it after finding the body in the first place. But one can achieve the same thing either way. One of my current uses is finding all of planetary ports looking for pre-upgraded gear whenever I enter a new system.

Another thing I really like is that once you have your filters set on the gal map, the UI moves out of the way so I can see more. With the old UI, the left panel is always there taking up 1/4 of the real estate on the screen, maybe more.

Now, having said all that. There are still some issues:

1. There was no reason to monkey with the usage of the dock menu other than adding "Disembark" at the bottom. It could have been left just the way it was otherwise. I fear now that it will never work well again. (unless that's all been fixed while I was on vacation)

2. Galaxy Map: If I click on a star at the edge of my field, centering on it, stars that weren't previously clickable from some radius of that star should now have clickable dots. This can be worked around by setting the starfield to "Realistic" and poof that problem is gone.

3. System Map: Should auto-center any single-clicked body, unless holding to target. This way when you single-click a body on the right side of the map, the resulting info panel won't cover it.

4. Probably many more that I just can't think of at the moment.

Beyond that, I don't have much to say about the Starport Services menu, though some of the sub menus still need some work.

Oh, that reminds me, has anyone heard/read why they changed the body colors in the FSS?

But I have to say, it has come a very very long way since launch. I was using so many workarounds in the first few weeks just to get on with business. Simple things like routing to a body or station that just didn't work.

I'm guessing we will see a lot of people who recently switched from Horizon to Odyssey complaining about UI.
So I will just.....

Oh, and can somebody get me the name of the, ah, "person" who made the exit button on the system and galaxy maps slightly different sizes and in slightly different locations on the UI? I'd like to give them, er, have a, um, conversation, yeah that's it, a "conversation" with them.

On the system/galaxy map: Click-and-hold to route to mission destinations, bookmarks, stations in lists, etc. saves me a lot of time. Not having to fight the "on hover" menu consistently hovering the wrong thing is nice too.

On the missions board: sorting missions alphabetically by destination system and then alphabetically by destination within system makes it much easier to pick out the ones going where I'm going ... the display of material rewards is nicer ... the ability to filter missions to an arbitrary set of offering factions ... categorisation to pick out types of mission is more useful.

Definitely wouldn't want to go back to the Horizons UI on either of those. (Missions has always been better in Odyssey ... map started out worse but after some early fixes I think has managed to get ahead)

On the outfitting UI: the new ability to buy modules direct to storage, perhaps? I don't know, I haven't needed to outfit a new ship for months.

Not denying that EDO UI has some nice improvements, but Horizons UI was more efficient AND could be also improved with some of the stuff introduced in EDO UI.
All in all, i pretty much like the Horizons UI better.
And i'm not a fan of Big Tiles interface either (carriers, stations, bookmarks, etc). It does make sense in a Touch UI for fat fingers, but not so much in a kb/m or controller UI
