The Vive discussion Thread

I do not believe there has been anything beyond 'A Few aliasing tweaks are on the way' it would be nice to know if this is something that can be fixed to an acceptable level and maybe even a time scale. I guess just a message to manage our expectations.

a little communication would be nice. having played Elite on the dk2 almost every day for a year and a half, i have to say that I am not impressed with how it looks on the vive. They made a big deal about supporting the vive and its the WORST looking game by far on the vive. BUT, knowing Frontier it will be fixed in 2.1 or hopefully the beta.

Yep... agree to that. I bet they are already working on improvements for the OpenVR interface and game-related optimizations. Give them some time. We have just started to collect experiences with the HMD at a larger scale and investigating the reasons and corrections doesn't happen in a day. The only thing not optimal - for now - which I see are the reflections in the lenses. Despite that, I judge more important that I may get up from time to time now... Immersion really gets me when I stand up, not thinking about my desk - just for watching. Do approach a station real slowly, stand up and watch the scenery... I have an urge to wave or to go the station's bar for a drink and a chat. Really cool...

HTC Vive set up
A collection of tips I have found and tried... ( hope this helps others )

Graphics set up:
Nvidia has new driver that supports this... download and install
Use Nvidia experience application to optimize Elite
Supersampling of x1 or lower best for me!... the higher this is the more stutter you get... depends upon your hardware power I bet.

Elite set up:
Run SteamVR and make sure all the components are green and tracking
Run Elite ( from nvidia experience ? )
Go in options and select HMD (headphones) for the '3D' item near the top
Scroll down a little and select 'VR Low' or 'VR High' for the quality

Text blurry:
Go to the SteamVR tool and recalibrate your room with the centre further back..... this way you can move closer and get a closer perspective - it is ‘better’ – still not great but better!

Headset sweetspot:
Definitely worth playing with both headset foam headliners...narrow face works best for me.
Seems to be the closer you are to the headset the better generally, some people playing with eyeshades but cannot comment on how good that is ... yet!
https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4gezog/8_sleep_mask_mod_worked_better_than_expected_and/

Fresnel lenses:
There are some peripheral flare type issues but this is down to lens design and cannot be fixed!..in my humble opinion, although a reduction in brightness in some areas of the Elite cockpit would help the situation?

Other inputs would be much appreciated.

Overall – rubbish resolution and poor graphics/text ... with the above mods it is bearable but obviously could be a lot better... crossing my fingers frontier are working on it!?...please, please, please J

Well, I just put in a Vive preorder that should be to me in June. Hopefully the issues will be fixed by then... I have a few hundred hours on my Xbox and was really looking forward to the PC move and getting the full experience with VR to boot.

First- a quick suggestion for those of you looking for an overhead solution. Search Amazon for 'retractable spring balancer' or check your hardware store for a lightweight, adjustable tool balancer. I saw some guys on YouTube using a ceiling retractable line connected to their cable and it seemed to work great for room scale.

Next my questions:
1. I'm planning on picking up a GTX 980TI but would like to wait for the 1070/1080s to launch hopefully in June. Anyone using a GTX 960? I might have that as my card the first couple of weeks, it's fine if it runs everything ok except ED.
2. I love my Xbox One Elite controller; does ED on PC support the gamepad button combo shortcuts like on Xbox One? Especially since keyboard shortcuts are a PITA.
3. If anyone has used a gamepad, have you used a connected keyboard/chatpad on it in ED? I'm hoping to use the Vive camera when I need to type in those pesky system names.

I'd go for the 970 rather than the 960. Hold off on a muscle card until later if that's where you want to be ideally.

AFAIK ED doesn't support the Xbox style shortcuts - but if you have VR, all that becomes irrelevant. Also if you're going PC - go buy a HOTAS - X52/X55 or similar, you'll loose your affinit for the Xbone controller in ED in about 10 seconds..... ;)

You can't use the Vive camera to type, unless you can already touch type - it doesn't show you a camera feed - it's an edge detected display so you can see the outline of the keyboard but not the lettering. That's not an issue for me as I can touch type, but if you need to see a keyboard to type, ymmv. Same applies with the game pad - you'll be able to see where it is, but not what's on it.

I believe that the PC/mac versions do indeed support the full XBOne controller settings, it is one of the preset controller settings in Elite when you connect it to your PC.

After I posted, I figured it must, because they would have to plan around the shortcuts on the Xbox one gamepad for the Rift.

Thanks for the heads up on the camera. I was under the impression that you could double-tap the button on the side of the Vive and it would just switch to the camera for view, but clarity was tough. Was that wrong? I wasn't sure if the wireframe referred to the room sensing or how the camera always appeared.

To clarify, I already have a 960 in my PC and it rated as 'capable', albeit at the lower end. I'm going for the 980TI or possibly the 1070 (I run 4K video, so Hevc decoding would be a plus) so I can get over a 2X bump, the 970 just isn't enough of a move. Just curious if anyone can say '960 worked for me on A, B, C but stuttered on games X, Y, and Z'. Then I'll know if I should just say screw the wait and start hunting for 980 TI deals at the end of May.

I've looked at a few Hotas, but because of that Elite controller I've become very used to the paddle control scheme and programming most games to feel the same, in addition to it being an amazing gamepad. I still have a Hotas on my Amazon wish list, but want a couple of hours with the Vive to decide if the immersion with the gamepad isn't enough.

So, am I to understand that a HOTAS does not support gamepad button combos then? Does a T-Flight Hotas X support enough functions/buttons to cover all the Elite controls?

The T-flight doesn't have enough buttons, but lots of people use voiceattack to make up for it. It can give you a good experience without paying hundreds for a fancier hotas. Even with an X52, I still use voiceattack.

Looks like they are keeping up with orders, Just got my delivery date, may 3rd :) I ordered 29th march.
Shipped from (CZECHREPUBLIC) S.R.O to Isle of wight UK.

The Warthog certainly has enough buttons and switches and I would recommend it strongly for ED. That said I also use Voice Attack.

Heh, I have X52 Pro. My feeling is not enough buttons, I think it has a lot more than the Warthog?

Depends how you use it I think.

Massive Vive comfort and FOV increase!

I'm a bit sceptical but guess might be worth a try?

Believe it. Having the lenses the 1 or so cm closer to your eyes immediately and obviously increases the "sweet spot". Easy to see just looking at the Steam VR menu. The area of sight where the text is clear is much larger. You can also easily A/B it by taking off your foam and just holding the bare HMD up to your face, then slowly pull it away from your face (to simulate the included foam) and see what happens...

Any suggestions here about stuttering issues when turning your head?

I have a GTX980Ti with latest drivers and a i5 6600K CPU.

It previously ran buttery smooth on a DK2 with 1.5x supersampling exact same rig. Now it is a stuttering mess in and around stations and on planets.

Any config recommendations?

I read back a few pages and most people are talking about anti aliasing. I'm guessing some work needs to be done on Steam VR efficiencies.

Edit: Worked it out. I was on windowed mode not fullscreen.

Tweaked other settings and got

Ultra + 1.5 super sampling = Judder. Lots of Judder
High + 1.5 super sampling = less judder (not really playable)
Ultra + no super sampling = very minimal judder (very playable)
High + no super sampling = smooth as butter

You are supposed to us VR low or VR High. High or Ultra are way higher than VR High.
The Vive needs 90 FPS the DK2 only needed 75 FPS.

It is a mess right now anyways though. Waiting for a patch myself.

I just bought Elite Dangerous for my first time yesterday. I am appalled by how poor the image quality is on the HTC Vive. Text is difficult to read, requiring me to lean forward. Textures are blocky. straight lines are aliased like crazy causing an obvious shimmering effect.

I'm glad that my performance has been A-OK on VR High, but the image quality is so bad I am nearly getting headaches.

I took a couple photos just to give a general idea of what the game looks like in my headset. These aren't scientific, but very close to showcasing what I see when I play.

I paid full price for this game and desire to play it daily due to how well it style meshes with my tastes, but I got it for VR and need it to look better than this.

So still no official reply..

Meanwhile people are getting anxious about this on Reddit too. Can we at least get something from Frontier that they are working on it or not.

"MADE FOR VR"

"THE WORLD'S LEADING TRIPLE-A VR GAME"

At this point the frontpage of Elite is just lying in the faces of people who bought Vive's!
