The White-knight Paradox: The fear of consequences.

"Shouting at the ground won't enable it to hear any better." --Lamargi *

Whingers tend to be angry the game doesn't work how they think it should (or how FD says it should) and that the game must change, that is the only option. 'White Knights' often point out that there are other options. I would say that whingers are shouting at the ground. They would say I am a white knight ;)

* Pretty sure this is a made up quote, but I love Zoviet France

I'm the guy on the left - everyone else is the guy on the right.

The trouble is, everyone else is thinking the same.

I often get accused of 'White Knighting' so this is where I feel the majority of complaints are unjust;-

  1. I know how difficult game development can be so I give the Devs a lot of leeway because I know to put 'Feature X' in will take a lot longer than the 'Oh that will only take a couple of hours' opinion that seems to be prevalent.
  2. I want the game to be about 'flying' spaceships around the galaxy having fun. None of this let a crewman fly the ship, while you are in the guns. That turns the game into Freelancer (I loved the universe of that game but hated the ship to ship combat).
  3. Has Horizons and Beyond improved the game - Yes.
  4. Has the Horizons and Beyond been worth the £20 it costs to upgrade - Yes.
  5. Is the game going to continue and improve? - Yes (as long as people are buying the ship kits, Paint Jobs and bobbleheads) :p
  6. This is a sandbox game, you are not the hero of a mission based plot driven campaign, deal with it. You only become a hero if you do something that makes the rest of the community is impressed by your actions.
  7. The flight Model is great. It ain't broke, so don't try and fix it.
  8. Bugs - You're game isn't over because you've found a bug. It's frustrating, but report it and let DFev fix it. Enough People report the bug it becomes a priority.

Where the complaints are valid;-

  1. There is some re-balancing required as far as 'Progression' is concerned. Some people feel that you can't get into the content they want to play fast enough but I think we can agree that getting to one of the big three ships in less than a couple weeks means that something is wrong.
  2. Unfinished Features - yup I can understand how difficult things are to do but not fixing some things because not everyone is using it (powerplay, CQC, Multicrew) is frustrating.
  3. To some of the newer content, it could be better signposted.

It was wall of text in context it was trying to tell - forum dads are bad, 'newbies' are cool and they need that Anaconda in 6 hours pronto.

Sometimes you don't need to wrap up your opinion in niceties. We understand you. We just don't agree (and that's cool right?) and attempt to paint it again as forum dads vs. newbies, or white knights vs. true heroes, etc. etc. is stupid.

Provide good argumented post offering different POV and you will gain nothing but respect from me.

Provide just weak sauce meta forum attack and...meh.

Agreed for the most part. I've noticed these salty thread starting posts recently where it first pretends to be meaningful , then the real nonsensical slag comes out under the subterfuge. In this case, notice the unproven implication that accuses "wk's" of having RNG god rolls , have already made off big from the previous exploits before they were nerfed, and are actively trying to keep newbs down supposedly "fearing" a hard reset and purposefully advocating quick nerfs in order to "stay ahead". How off base. I never rolled much more than 20 rolls under the old engr system. I don't actively seek out pvp, just enough to not die instantly and be able to escape if overpowered. And from what has been seen from the forum, most "defenders"/ "wk's" of the game are rarely concerned with personal game advantages. Instead, "wk"s" are often pointing out how much the game is doing well, not fixate over the bugs that often get fixed eventually anyways with patience. Credit inflation is an ongoing real issue in the balance of the game and "wk's" are genuinely concerned about the future and health of the game ie. the big picture rather than fixating on a single cmdr's immediate experience at the expense of all else. The real facts are, the game is doing much better. More are pleased with 3.0.+ than not where the past salted critiques of the game "dying" have fewer legs to stand on, so now we get these weird salt threads pretentiously themed on the surface about anything even if unfounded. I just got a 7.5 million credit reward non-winged mission for hauling 120 tons with a faction that I allied with for a decent while. Being able to average up to 5 to 15 million/hour is more than enough to enjoy the game and get the ships in time.

The thought of you being accused of being a White Knight just cracks me up! :)

I've always known your opinions to be well balanced and based on all the various input you get from the community via Lave Radio and playing the game yourself.

Lets not forget that a favorite tactic of "Haters" is to throw out that term at anyone who doesn't despise the game like they do. ;)

There is a legit problem behind the botting thing, but as I said to the OP of that thread it's been presented very badly. As in more harm than good counterproductive probably increasing the amount of botting sort of badly. So that's probably the worst example of the lot.

Take the mode whinging as a more sweeping general example, everyone who bothered to read a little knows about the modes, knows they won't be changing and knows they are all tied into just one BGS and knew it before buying. Yet we've had constant meltdowns about it for four years straight with no let up. They haven't got a legit complaint, they are never going to get anywhere with their demands, it pops up constantly in unrelated threads and lacking arguments they resort to name calling. I'm so sick of hearing it the only reply to all that rubbish I can summon up any more is "I don't like 3rd person games, so I check before I buy. You should do the same for your gaming preferences" but what I'm thinking is "shut up thicko".

Legit issues get buried under a mountain of rubbish.

This...right here!

I am known to be a white knight and I would absolutely welcome a reset.

Sorry that I just destroyed your entire theory but that's what happens to nonsense posts like yours.

Pretty much agree with everything in this.

Hey. Leave Trump out of this :p

Regarding OP: I've got 4+ billion and I would welcome each- and everyone having at least that much so that everyone can play as he/she likes.
Oh yeah, I would be happy to have each- and every one of the people who think I have billions to spare to have their credits be set to the number I have in my account. You are welcome to my wealth which is about equal to 4 hours of Smeatonning. Is that how it's going to be?

"Sir! I strenuously disagree with your assertion that these gold rushes are a boon to this game, and to prove my intentions are pure, I hereby provide you with all the details of my bank account."

I believe that is called: pre-empting the Ad Hominem. In fact, I know this, since I just called it that.

When the norm on a discussion board goes from engaging with someone in a discussion by addressing the arguments they put forth, to attacking the credentials of the one making the argument, in this case the bank account, we're in bad shape fellers. It would mean that above a certain number of credits, arguments on limiting income would be dismissed because of those credits. No matter how good the argument is.

Lastly, can anyone explain why the word "paradox" is in the title?

People here get called White Knights for a lot less that not despising the game. If they have an opinion that differs from someone ranting, or even agrees with the rant but mentions that it maybe not be a humanity ending event suddenly they are labelled a White Knight, a Fanboi or having intimate relations with a Mr D Braden lol

I am, what Cmdr Lucca1985 called, a vet, from the kickstarter days and even before that on the forum of old. I am not rich in the game either by any means or have all the best ships fully engineered with God Rolls. All I've done is potter around the place, doing odd jobs here and there, trying to progress normally, which is why, after all these years since the last Gamma wipe, I still have a lot to do and still have to keep a wary eye on my rebuy costs. I've only made one Elite rank (Exploration) in all that time for example, so that should tell you what my playstyle has been.
Some people might well have used exploits or outright cheats to get ahead but they are only cheating themselves at the end of the day, robbing themselves of the true value of making an achievement in the game. For me, I am not bothered by what they do as I've always believed everyone ought to be able to play the game in their own way, each to their own as it were. That there has always been a hallmark of the Elite series; do things your own way. [yesnod]

However I do also agree with Cmdr Lucca, that some of the changes brought into the game have made things much harder for some folk, who, like me, just potter around the place trying to scare up some credits (mostly) honestly. Then again, I also find myself agreeing with Rubbernuke, back in the early days, just buying a Cobbie 3 was a big thing to reach because credits were so hard to come by, remember trying to mine without limpets Rubbernuke? [where is it]

So I am on the fence over this but I can understand where some folk struggling in the game can only look on while other players in the game run around in their god-like chariots. Me? I just get on with what I am trying to get on with and still end up broke. I have to admit tho, the game as it is these days, is leaving me behind or at least that's how I feel about it.

And as for the winge aspects on the forum, well.....
The only way this game will improve (and has improved) is via constructive criticism. That's something that is healthy and during my time on here as a mod I encouraged. FD rightly should, at times, be called out on some of the design decisions they made. Not I hasten to add because they are hated but because people genuinely love this game (for lots of different reasons) and really want it to be the best space sim out there, just as it always was going back 3 decades.

So, my message is this; put your swords away you white knights, calm yourself you dissatisfied folk out there. Instead of forum wars, lets join together, organise, help each other and help, guide even, FD's course to make this latest Elite the best ever in the series. While perfection can never be attainable, gradual improvements for the betterment of all can be through lots of feedback going both ways. This lack of feedback is one of the reasons why people might rant on here is because they feel their views are being ignored or dismissed. By working together, and I include FD in this, we can all enjoy a game that is worthy of the name Elite. Surely that's a win for us all?

Lets us all try to do better (that includes you too FD!) and strive to be a real elite fanbase and game developer working together to create the magic that is the Elite series. It's there, for all you, if you want it...

What I don't understand is why are we discussing allegiance to FD if the game is broken and doesn't work to the point it is totally unplayable. We should focus our attention in the important bit, and only that: did anyone try to honk the thargoid probe with the Advanced Discovery Scanner?

The better question to ask is, 'Who is bothering with the Thargoids?'.
