The year is 2020 and Elite Dangerous is still P2P. Let's discuss PvE and PvP servers.

I always loved Fallout 3 compared to the other Fallout games because the large map made it feel like I was alone and human (NPC) life was more rare to find.
Yes, even the story line as linear as it was, was the better imho. I did like aspects that Black Isle studios implemented with New Vegas. Combine those two games (complete with continuing after main line is finished), would be the ultimate game for me. Fallout 4, what a dud. I like the PC speaking animations and immersion but man they really missed mark on that one.

I grew up before online gaming was much of a thing. Having an actual friend round to play a game is one thing, the game is really incidental to socialising. But interacting closely with complete strangers in my quiet downtime is like inviting some random in off the street to watch me eat my dinner.

Well said. And I too am of a similar mindset. I did LAN play years ago flying Falcon 4, but back then if some idiot started doing weird crap, we could go pop him one and throw him out the front door. ;)

This online stuff means I'm supposed to endure people (and their antics) I wouldn't even both to say hello to in public. Not gonna happen.

Indeed - I enjoy co-operative play and have no interest in providing a few seconds of "fun" for others who offer none in return.

The few times I played in open, I actually enjoyed hanging out in a hazres and helping those who needed it take on the NPCs. I'd stop short of blowing them up and let the other player have them. But then the idiots would show up and I'd trade shots with a few and then leave. Nothing 'fun' about it.

That's cool, I can understand that. I've always advertised my gank evasion training to those that actually want to play in open and I understand there are those that still just enjoy playing in PG without the hassle.
Still, I would LOVE to do some gank evasion training with you someday.

New Vegas is actually my favorite Fallout of all time. It doesn't have the solitude feel that 3 had but it had other things that I absolutely loved.
I completely agree about Fallout 4 though. The story was just boring and it was way too populated for a post nuclear world.

Though it doesn't matter open / solo whathaveyou. It's become stupid to play unengineered vs players and environment. The bloody powercreep saw to that. Thx FDEV - you really know how to nerf with a bat.
You crack me up. Despite our many differences, I actually kind of agree with you about this.
Though I would hate having no engineering, the level of engineering and gap between a fully G5 and unengineered ship is absolutely ridiculous. Shields, in particular, are WAY too powerful but I would get annoyed if I couldn't engineer my distro. PvP fights with an unengineered distro are just obnoxious because you can't boost often enough to stay in close.

Not really - most 'evasion' happens long before engineered modules even come into play.

It'd be stupid [or at least risky] to get into an actual fight with an unengineered ship imho :)
Definitely. To become a mentor in my gank evasion academy you have to survive a gank in an unengineered Cobra III against my G5 death machine and many have done it. So it is possible to survive in open, but as you said, attempting to fight back is a huge mistake.

I'm curious - how does that particular exercise start ?

Do you form a wing first and start from there ?

I've seen people struggle to find each other even when they want to fight.

Space really is a big place and never is that more apparent than when playing ED in open :)
