🐻‍❄️❄️ Link to the Entries❄️🐧

Brrrr I'm chilly! There are some really cute and cosy entries this round, it's looking just as frosty in your parks as it does outside my living room windows right now...with one original exception! But I'll let you discover that for yourselves ;)

Great job everybody and happy new year once again! I hope these were as fun to make as they look to visit.
Aaaand - we have a tie for the theme for the next round between:
Rocky Coast Habitat, or
Humans and the Natural World: an education centre highlighting an aspect of human's relationship to the natural world

In the event of a tie, I am the deciding vote and since we just had a coastal theme, let's go for Humans and the Natural World! It's been a popuar option since the beginning and is quite different from everything else we've done so far. I might even do a build for this one myself! Sooo...

Round 8 begins today with Humans and the Natural World
13th January - 24th February

Details:
  • Build an education centre highlighting one or more aspects of humanity's relationship to the natural world.
  • For example: domestication, deforestation, the climate crisis, hunting and poaching, animals in medicine, fashion and the fur trade, animals and humans working together, indigenous populations and protection of habitats, palm oil, the fishing industry, protection of marine environments, AI and animals, interspecies communication, whale language ...etc etc.
  • It can be positive, negative or balanced in tone or focus - the choice is yours.
  • It can be one building or many, it does not have to be roofed, for example it could be signage wrapping around a wall or habitat barrier.
  • It can include habitats or exhibits adjacent or blending in to the build but these are not necessary.
  • Additional elements such as an imagined fundraising drive for charity are welcomed but not necessary.
  • The bare minimum for this round would be a custom sign or poster on a wall or one of the education media items. The most could be an entire zoo dedicated to research and education. It's really up to you what this 'education centre' looks like and how big it is.
Important note - there will be a new scoring category for this round: RESEARCH!
  • As the focus of this build is on education, let's put our mortarboards on and see how much we can learn from creating and sharing our builds for this round!
  • This will replace the 'met the brief' category for scoring so that the score forms are the same length as usual. Obviously by displaying good research you will have met the brief so this category is obsolete for this round.
  • Feel free to include links to your sources in your entry sheets - it would be a nice touch so we can all follow up ourselves on further reading if we want to.
Custom signs and media are probably going to be very useful to you in this round, so here are some tips:
  • I recommend using Canva to make your media - it's free and easy to use and has lots of templates and fonts.
  • The sizes you'll need are:
    • 1824 x 1024 for all large billboards
    • 456 x 256 for habitat education boards and small tv screens
    • 500 x 500 for square posters
    • 256 x 456 for tall posters
  • You can use an image splitter like this one to make wider posters and then split them so that you can line them up across multiple billboards like in this video by @ZSHplays
  • You can make original videos or use gifs on your billboards and posters as well like this one I made for the Zookeeper's Favourite round!
  • If you haven't made them before, custom billboards can be fiddly and a lot of work - but they are also a lot of fun and creatively satisfying! Don't underestimate the time you'll need to make them, especially if you are a perfectionist like me and want them to be neat and pretty. Extra time has been given for this round to allow for media design :)

Tips and Reminders
❓If you have an idea that you are unsure fits the theme or want to develop - post it here and we can help
🩵 Blueprints allowed for this round are: fonts, custom animals and custom plants. Custom signs are not allowed for this round as they are likely to be a key focus of your builds.
🏃‍♀️As always, if you're running late it's no problem, just let me know so the score sheets don't get released without you :)

Please especially note that Sign and Media Blueprints are NOT allowed for this round!

Highlighting this again here so that there are no sad surprises at the end! If entries are found to have used blueprint signs they will be asked to remove them if there is time remaining in the competition, or disqualified if submitted on or after the deadline.

Read the above post for full description of Round 8 :)

@Mr-Hyrax 2 your entry form wasn't shareable again so I've included it via a link in another PDF uploaded to the google folder. Hope that's okay with you - it saved me screenshotting 50+ pages so had to be done! Next time please double check your sharing permissions carefully if you would be so kind 💚

Just to clarify - as I am already anticipating questions - you don't have to use signs or custom media for this round.
It just seemed likely that lots of people would.

I'm not sure how else research can be shown and shared but I will formally bow to your creative ideas and talent!
Research is one of the scoring categories so if you are aiming for a high score, keep that in mind.
But you are welcome to interpret the theme differently and not worry about the scores so much - that's your prerogative!
Feel free to surprise me :)

That's werid, I checked and thought it was working, I am sorry that I made that mistake, I have no clue what's going on with it. I might have to put images in a spoiler tab just in case but I will make sure to triple check for know on. Very sorry about this I swear I thought I double checked it.

Your link worked fine for me, it didn't ask me to log in to access it .. I usually point out those type of links straight away, so just checked again in case I had missed your post, but nope it still works.

starts muttering Darn it, I knew I should have took my initial off stops muttering rofl, I think I have discovered a challenge even harder to do than the winter wonderland .. or it will be so basic that it will be the lowest set of scores ever rofl.

Okay, I think I have something that might work.

As a general thing i have noticed now and in previous competitions aswell is that the number 1 tipp for anyone here is that less is more, both to score higher and to actually learn something. The broader and larger the submissions are the more they tend to just look worse, which makes sense as theirs more area that needs to be prettied up, but it doesnt change the fact that its a bad return investment. If the time spend on 3 okayish habitat was completly poured into one it might come out pretty good or great even, which in turn is more impressive and atleast to me fun then 3 okayis ones.
Ofcourse everybody should play the game how they like, but cutting down on scope to focus on less components is atleast worth a shot for anyone to try imo, especally as the next topic is one single education build

That's right, sorry I wasn't clear - I could access the doc but not download it as PDF or copy paste so that I could add it to my own google folder. I'm not sure why, I checked the sharing permissions and they seemed okay - maybe you could add me as an Editor? I'll DM you my email. Thanks for trying and its no prob, just something for us to figure out next time :)

I am currently away from my computer so I am unable to acess the images, but I will have access to it by Friday, if the images are still unaccessible.
That's fine, I'd always imagined that scoring would take place within a week and I'll release the scores at the weekend if they're ready so Friday or Sat is perfect :)

So far I haven't deleted any folders so all the previous entries for rounds 1-6 are still viewable! I'll keep them up as long as I can :) When we get to our 1 year anniversary I plan to do a little recap and share some best bits from the archives.

And then there's me, already planning a huge museum with tonnes of custom content 🫣
