Thinking about Fleet Carriers & Rebuy...

Suposing an Exploration FC makes a jump to a 500Ly distant star system, previously unreachable, and that system doesn't include the materials needed to fuel the beast...

Does the FC have a suicide button, and will the player be faced with a rebuy for the FC and all of the ships/modules on board it?

It could be 'interesting' to find out :)

The real question: The 'special fuel' for Fleet Carriers, you also can buy it, they say. So - can you transport it with one of your ships, and fuel up from your ship? This would be necessary to reach unpopulated systems. It also would limit how far and how fast you can travel outside the bubble.

I really hope, that travel outside the bubble is severely limited or even impossible, or this 500 ly jump range would destroy exploration quite fast, since there are a lot of systems which cannot be reached now with a maximum jump range of around 80 lys (160 with jumponium, 320 with a neutron star, but you will need one first). Exploration would become a thing of material grinding and money grinding and no longer attractive (to me at least).

The FC is said to be indestructible .... but what happens to all the ships on board (other people's ships?) when it cannot go any further? They, presumably will have to self destruct.

The edge of the Galaxy will then be littered with a shell of immobile FCs for later explorers to discover who, heading for other galaxies, will wonder who was daft enough to try jumping out that far without an intergalactic hyperdrive. o_O

We don't know how many 500ly jumps a Carrier will be able to do on a tankful of fuel, but if it's at least 2, you'd usually be able to jump back again.

I expect some will still mess it up by jumping into the unknown on a mostly-empty tank, but a Fuel Rat Carrier could still get out there. Perhaps a complicated rescue involving multiple Carriers, if one can't carry enough fuel for both to return.

Hooray for FC threads \o/

(I thought fdev had already talked about scrapping FCs. Not so much about rebuys since they can't be damaged.)

I mean, there's not much to talk about currently. A FC thread is even a nice diversion from all the bugs and Arx threads.

I suppose it depends on the material to refuel.

If one can't bring fuel and must acquire it in the system they happen to be in, means that the fuel rats are going to become very very busy.

They can be remotely pointed.
You jump the FC anywhwhere without exit? Leave the FC with you ship of choice, suicidewinder back to bubble, buy fuel and magically point your FC back ouf the deadzone (because special fuel will be in your magic inventory) 🤷🏻‍♂️

I suppose it depends on the material to refuel.
Frontier have said that it is a commodity which can be purchased or mined (i.e. transferable, not a material), so as long as a carrier can carry enough ships with that commodity on board to refuel it for a jump and have at least one tonne spare to move to the stranded carrier, the stranded carrier can eventually always be rescued.

Careful with those assumptions. People also assumed you can use your SRV while using MC, or join a wing.

There are more important questions regarding Fleet Carriers that we, the community D E M A N D an answer from FD:
  1. What colour will it initially come in?
  2. When will paint kits be available for it?
  3. When will ship kits be available for it?
  4. How many bobbleheads can one fit in the cockpit?
We need to protest to get the answers. What avi are we all going to use?
