this game coding is brutal

I can see it now player parks up in the docking slot and pauses their game which blocks the port so no one can enter or leave. Immune to all damage because they are paused.

While we are at it can I have a pause button for other mmo's please ?

I know I can quit, it was an important phone call and I couldn't afford to miss it so I didn't get the opportunity. Of course you cant pause the whole game, but you could pause a players participation in it, make them invisible, park them somewhere, a dev could come up with several workable ideas. It isn't the first time Ive lost a ship because of some non obvious thing brutally slaying me. Just peeved that's all, 2 hours worth grinding wiped out :(

I understand your frustration. If something like that happens it's really really annoying. 10mil down the drain is rather harsh. If it is any consolation: when I got blasted by a station for no reason I could determine, I lost only 250.000 Credits, but since I only had an Eagle then, this meant first that I was broke, and about 6 hours behind.
Don't know how it was for you, but the fact that the game has no pause is something that came to me early. I learned, when supercruising my Sidewinder towards my destination, hitting ESC, and when I came back I was about 100.000Ls from where I wanted to go. That was on the first or second day.

Pausing single players like you described would be technically possible of course, but would make cheating very easy. Just pause when you are being attacked, unpause shoot, pause again ... you get the picture.

The good thing for the next important phone call is: hitting "Exit to Main Menu" takes only marginally longer than just hitting ESC, so you won't miss the call either.

Sorry for your loss though. Let the game be for a day or too until you had time to cool down.

T9 with 4.5m gold on board, docked in a station. Select launch and the phone goes. Hit ESC to pause the game and while Im on the phone the station kills my T9. 5.2m insurance and 4.5m lost stock and I'm suddenly down nearly 10m. In hindsight I know why, but jeez guys this is a game and real life sometimes takes precedence. If Im in ESC or PAUSE how about you actually pause the game?

This has absolutely nothing to do with game code in any way, shape, or form. This is entirely, one hundred percent, your fault. You chose to answer the phone, you bear the consequences for that choice. It doesn't matter if the phone call was important. It doesn't matter if it wasn't. It doesn't matter if you stubbed your toe on the way to the phone. Nothing in this story adds any blame to Frontier or their game code whatsoever. Your ship blowing up is a direct consequence of you choosing to accept the phone call and answer it.

Why would you want to answer the phone when playing ED ? For gods sake man get your priorities straight. Unless the kids are on fire I wouldn't let anything distract me.

I agree Kyryck... But to be totaly fair to SkyUK the button IS labelled "Pause" in the Controls menu.

To avoid confusion it should probably be renamed...

The lack of pause in online game is absolutely normal and understandable, but the real problem is: why do we have PAUSE MENU? If I go to the menu and hit options, I can then return to PAUSE MENU. Don't you think it is a bit confusing? It looks like a cruel deception.

I thought the pause button worked in solo too...I paused in gamma immediately after a "Harmless" Sidewinder interdicted me in my Cobra. I had my dinner, chatted to the family a little and went back to the game...had my fight without losing my shields and everything was cool.

I didn't realise that the game hadn't paused until I docked and saw I had a repair bill because I was down to 40% hull!

Yes, it's ridiculous that the key binding is called "PAUSE MENU".

You know what else is ridiculous? The people that always blame the player instead of recognizing flaws in the game. The option being called "PAUSE MENU" is a flaw in the game that is guaranteed to lead to a certain amount of player confusion, especially if they're playing Solo Mode and don't understand things that others consider "common knowledge" from their experience with other MMOs.

Hahaha, so many people confusing being harsh with being correct, and locking laughable. Menu is called a pause menu in-game, which is a dumb and confusing game design choice and not a solo players fault for not knowing everything up-front.

Well if we were talking about an absolute newbie player I might completely agree. The labelling is simply wrong here and it is confusing. BUT after all the hours the OP put in to get a T9, TO ME it is astonishing that he never realised that the so-called "Pause Menu" is just a menu like any other.

How can you make it to a t9 without figuring out that esc doesn't pause anything....

pausing / saving was the thing that i most wanted from the offline version i backed and hoped for

i'm enjoying E-D massively, but it's a different game than they one they promised in the kickstarter.

Some mistakes/lessons are more expensive than others. Yours is fairly expensive. Still, you won't do the same thing twice when it cost you this time.

My phone has the answering machine on. If it's important they'll leave a message. Thus I can park the ship then call back.

If you want a pause button rather than a quit button then may I suggest that when you press pause, your ship acts like a ship on autopilot so that if you are near a station, it moves away to a safe distance and awaits further instruction, if you are travelling from a to b, it travels in that direction at the slowest speed possible and either saves and quits (in both cases) if no one else is around or circles when close to the destination, if in a battle, it will be in a stalemate with other npc ships in that the shields will take a few hits but neither ship will deplete the shields, if against another player then it will send a message saying that the ship is temporarily under npc (or autopilot) so that the player can decide whether they should continue the fight against the now npc controlled ship or wait for the player to return or leave.
My suggestions are a way to stop people who are in trouble to remain in trouble when they return (unlike logging off) and therefore prevent it as being a get out clause. It also stops players who are safe to remain safe by moving away from a potentially dangerous area like above a pad (as you will be killed for loitering)- you may see this as a way to leave the station safely rather than with skill but the same already happens with those that cheat by logging off and then back on and by leaving by pausing, your ship will be scanned and fined if carrying something that it shouldn't (unlike if you left using your own initiative).
