Thrustmaster Warthog Target Configuration & Sheets

**Update: 23/12/14 - I've now updated the video, the target profile file, custom binds and images. I'e also added the source for both the blank layouts and the Photoshop edited files I've been using.

Hi

After a big help by Yaffle (thanks for the profile), I started to play around with the Target software and trying to put together a script that would do the things I wanted.

3 hours later having learnt all about it I have something tested and seemingly working. So I thought I would share my "creation".

It's a configuration profile that is run in the main Target GUI software. I've not mapped any Joystick commands, as it's not necessary, but I have mapped some of the Throttle switches to take advantage of the commands in Elite that allow you to Toggle On/Off.

For instance the Cargo Scoop in the On position will always deploy your scoop, i.e. You retract all your hard points and the scoop will automatically re-deploy again. Only when the switch is Off will it permanently retract.

I've also mapped some of the commands to the available LEDs, for added wow factor, including your ship lights ;-)

I just ran through the Elite Controls options page and mapped all the controls as per the diagrams.

Here is the new video that shows how to import and use the target profile, configure Elite Dangerous and apply a custom binds file (it's very similar to the first one, just with a few minor updates now ED has launched):

This is now the old video, but I've left it here for prosperity :)
Target Configuration and ED Control Binding

**REMEMBER: To always fire up the target gui and run your profile, otherwise you'll spend 20 mins trying to figure out why your bindings have gone berserk; not that I have ever forgotten, honest ;-)

When FD give more of the controls a Toggle On/Off option then you'll be able to do so much more...

Edit: ExRex has put together some additional detail around the use of macros to help you out further. There is some additional info on DX bindings, events and some help for potential Target issues: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=22379&p=1679508&viewfull=1#post1679508

Target Profile

Hi There,

just fired up the premium beta today and I'm trying to setup my warthog hotas and MFG crosswind to finally try this beautiful game.

I looked at your profile and it looks good, but it seems there is no link to the target file under your Target Profile link.

Sorry, could have sworn I double checked it. It appears something to do with the .fcf extension that gives issues, as the file is there.

I've zipped the .fcf file up now and updated the link, so it should work.

I've not mapped all commands, as I've never used some, so if you, or anyone, can suggest any more changes I'll gladly update them and the config sheets.

As it turns out the LEDs were actually really easy to control, shame they are in a really bad place. On full throttle, they are hidden! :-(

Theoretically, you could open the case up and run your own LEDS, but I'll leave that till the warranty runs out me thinks. I've done a fair bit with the Arduino for another game I'm part of (Project Cars), that has an API. If ED had a read only API then you could drive the Arduino, lights, switches, etc. instead.

Here's hoping...

great job, not how I have mine set up, but it has given me food for thought..

I'd love to play with the LED's

:D

The manual (from the help dropdown on the left) is really good, for a technical manual. LED shenanigans can be found on page 24. It's really not too hard at all.

I'll try with yours tomorrow - looks good from the diagrams. I've not used TARGET since alpha 3 as the warthog handling had improved.

Top stuff.

Not that it matters, but the "shift" key (S4, joystick pinkie lever) to switch between the and [O] functions on the switches is the same one you've coded to flight assist off.

TARGET allows you to define for each key an "In" or "out" action, it does the "in" action when you hold the S4 (in this case) otherwise the out. It further allows "UP" "MIDDLE" and "DOWN" actions, which are dictated in this case by the autopilot switch. It is handy if you have literally hundreds of keystrokes as I think it gives six per switch, but can cause some issues if the joystick is heavily coded. Anyway, back to my point.

This won't matter unless someone is using the "hold FA OFF to keep FA off" mode, they may find that some switches won't work as TARGET is looking for an input.

Likewise the APALT and APPAT (autopilot three way switch) sends an UP and DOWN layer command as well as hyperspace/frameshift.

I don't think it matters, as it's an unlikely state of affairs to trigger it, but if people have unexpected behaviour that could be the reason.

I really like the LED use, I could never be bothered to do it. Again a shame they are hidden by the throttle. I can only assume the aircraft has the same "feature"?

Now we just need to stop lights resetting every so often to keep it all in sync and all will be well.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm very new to the Target software, I seem to recall asking someone for their profile to get me started ;-)

I'll have a look over the weekend to see if I can take out some of the potential future issues.

I'm taking an anti-griefing sabbatical this week.

Do I have to assign keystrokes in the options screen or is it default?

Some of the commands may map right away, but many won't be defaulted like that. I just used the sheets and ran through the control binding screen to map everything. Couple of mins tops and you're away.

Just remember to change the cargo scoop and ship lights toggle option to be off, otherwise the switches will just toggle and not actually switch.

The only other one I found useful was to map the back thrust to the opposite of the reverse switch. I'll update the diagrams and the target file over the weekend.

BTW Everyone - Please let me know if you find it useful, or if you prefer a different layout. I'm still new at Elite and have just mapped commands to what I thought would be good. I'm open to suggestions and persuasion that another layout is better/simpler.

Cheers for this.
Just ordered a Warthog and have been looking for something to base this on.

Can see the images on my phone so have you allocated the rudder?

Hi Guys,
Absolute noob here, I have the Thrustmaster Warthog options on controls in game, but I see no sign of Elite as an option in the TMWH Target command center. Before I go trying to set it up to suit me, which I think I can do in Elite(?) (or is it better done in the command center?) Why can I not see Elite as an option on TARGET Command Center. And secondly, more of an immediate problem here, with the default set up I can fly the ship but cannot work out how to get to the UI controls for Navigation or systems at all. Please help to get me going :)!

You dont need to use the TARGET software. Im not using it.

In the ED game start with the default option for your Warthog HOTAS (on key/controls configuration). Then play the game and assign the extra stuff that you need and dont have.

Look at the joystick image of the original post of this thread and look for

TARGET Panel
SENSOR Panel
SYSTEM Panel

and

UI Action UP
UI Action DOWN
UI Action LEFT
UI Action RIGHT

with those you will be able to move through menus inside the ship.
I have it a slightly diferent. for right/left I have next/previous menu tab.

You are correct, there is no need, but there are some enhancements you can make with it. One of the issues is the non-return of the toggle switches on the throttle. So, for example, I press a switch UP to turn on the lights. To turn them OFF I need to push it down, then push it up again. This helps correct that sort of thing. No big deal at all, but it does help.

Hey MikeyTT,

Nice work on the profile so far! I have one suggestion after reviewing your charts - map fire group 2 to the 2nd stage joystick trigger while leaving it also mapped to the red button on top. This will allow you to fire each group independently or fire both at once with the one trigger, giving you a bit more dynamic control over your weapons. I can see this really suiting certain weapon configurations as well where for instance you can pulse your fire group 2 fixed multi-cannons each time you get the target lined up while keeping continuos fire on them with your fire group 1 gimballed / turret lasers and keeping your thumb free for other functions such as countermeasures or power management.

Otherwise can't wait to try your profile out :)

Hi, how do you produce the .png files? Do you have a template or something

Load the profile into TARGET and then go to the left hand panel and select "print". You can print as a picture, or as a list of buttons.

You could make a template by printing an empty profile.

Oh I'd never noticed that before, thanks!

I tried running the profile linked on the OP, but controls don't work if they're not explicitly mapped in Target. Are you mapping additional items to those listed in the linked .fcf file, or is there some passthru option I'm overlooking?

@Boadicea - if you load the config file in the 1st post and run it. Then in ED map each of the controls on the png sheets. That maps the vast majority of controls you need, including the UI navigation.

@Amadeus - rudder? I use a pedal set for yaw, if that's what you meant.

@Hyp3rion - I did originally look at the 2-stage trigger, but I found I didn't have the control to only partially pull the trigger for the main fire group. Too much over excitement in combat I'm afraid ;-)

@Amorelia - once I have target running with the profile, I just go through the controls config screen and map each of the controls off the sheets (every one, not just target managed controls). Takes a few minutes, but you only need to do it once. As for the images , I just downloaded the empty control sheets and used an editor to add the text. When I did it I only had MS Publisher available and I just export as an image.
