Why not?
" If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead? "
YES , in a heartbeat . There are so many games that i can go shoot someone , why not have a game where we don't =-)
SWTOR had PvP servers for the Open World. Afaik they were shut down. They were consolidating regions on them when I played the game. It's an unsustaining audience in many cases - especially with predominantly PvE audience. It's both because the team made it both.
Because the team thought (and maybe still thinks) that unrestricted ganking is something players enjoy.
I can't name a single MMO that allows unrestricted ganking. Maybe EVE does? I never played that game, but I don't think it does.
Most MMOs have a battleground-type system for PvP. You queue for it, it's team vs team, you lose nothing for losing and win credits or something for winning. Those games also don't have unrestricted PvP in the regular game world, because that kind of PvP is toxic and chases players away. The last game I can think of with that kind of PvP is Shadowbane, and that's been gone a long time now.
ED already has CQC. That's the game's PvP. Now add a mode like that but we can use our own ships (and get rid of the silly powerups) and I bet it would be popular. Queue for it in the normal game, teams of 3v3 or even 5v5, maybe a 1v1 queue as an option, with victory awarding you some credits or something but losing does nothing detrimental.
I'm up for that.
No it's not and your comment doesn't make any sense if you think about it.Tbh this whole thread is just another request for an "easy mode".
Open is for players that enjoy an environment that comes with risk and dynamic interaction.
Hostile players are just part of the game, removing this singular danger would be the end of ED for many.
No it's not and your comment doesn't make any sense if you think about it.
There already is an 'easy mode' as you call it. It's Solo and PG. This thread is just another request from people who would like to play with others instead of against them.
That you need to ask shows that you don't have a clue how other people play the game. Which is fine, nobody knows everything. People need to realise that their view isn't universal though. And what do they want to do with others that they cannot do already?
Actually I do play with random strangers. It's quite fun and they often get added to my friendlist.Haul cargo in wing? That's possible with friends, random strangers are not going to be much of a help.
In a PG I would only meet a handful of people who are in my PG, or no people at all because everyone is in a different mode. That's not my idea of multiplayer.Kill a wing assassination target in wing? Well that's not exactly a pacifist kind of thing but that doesn't matter, it's easy to do in a PG if you are afraid of big bad gwieferz. Those kind of players, if there is even a single one around in the first place, are just going to steal your target in a PvE mode where they cannot blow you out of the sky.
Wrong, it sucks in PG because nobody is there. In Open I always send a wing invite to everyone in the RES and we are having fun killing pirates together, something that wouldn't work in a PG.Wing up and bounty hunt together in a Res site? Actually it's already even better in PG than in Open since there are no more people there to steal your targets (and whom you wouldn't even be able to stop in a PvE-only "Open" mode as they would be invulnerable).
Explore Guardian sites together? That's basically the same case as the previous one: in PG you can coordinate your actions but that's not working if there are other people around since they will just mess things up for you, it does not matter if they can shoot at you or not.
Again, there aren't many people in my PG. I actually do want to play with random strangers, and many other people as well as you can see from this thread.Go kill Thargoids in AXCZ's? Pretty much the same thing again, better in PG as generally you don't want random strangers to determine how and when the instance gets started or held.
It's pretty much irrelevant which mode you use when you are exploring and therefore not related to the discussion.Explore the Galaxy? Well you don't really need anyone else to do that, but even if you did, you can safely stay in Open since you're not going to see any other living souls in the middle of nowhere anyway.
You know why.Now it's my turn to ask: Why are you against a PvP toggle? I already asked 15 pages ago and nobody managed to give a satisfying answer.
Surprisingly, I don't.You know why.
It's because we all know the relative numbers of player types. The game would be changed: all the stuff about ganking would be recognised as an aberration which could be sidelined, rather than "normal gameplay". I think it would be better to just have a separate Open-PvE mode or make instancing dependent on the flag setting (one of the few good ideas in this thread), so that people who want "Mad Max in Space" won't have to see ships they can't explode. But even then they'd get upset about their version of Open filling with tumbleweed and the ghastly knowledge that lots of other people were having a good time in a parallel dimension.Surprisingly, I don't.
Some people are obviously against it because it destroys griefing and ganking, which is good in my opinion.
But not everyone in this thread is a 'evil ganker' and I don't understand why they have such a big problem with optional PvP.
Most of the purple headed warriors already left the game AFAIK.
Well ganking or even PvP in general already isn't normal gameplay. The vast majority has no interest in PvP, at least that's what all the polls showed when they were still allowed. Apart from that, Braben always made clear that he doesn't want that type of gameplay but 'meaningful PvP' instead (whatever that means). It's because we all know the relative numbers of player types. Here's a couple:Surprisingly, I don't.

Then they can switch PvP on.Here's a couple:
People bought a game advertising survival in a cut throat universe, and they actually want to have it? (*NPCs will not provide this)
Again, this would still be possible if you swith PvP on."Anything goes" makes all in-game morality choices available to me and meaningful. If we meet in open and I don't try to destroy you, that already tells you something about my CMDR. If instead we strike up a convo and do some co-op then that provides a stark contrast to other encounters we might experience.
PvP on...?People just don't want the game to be watery and toothless.
That doesn't make sense. If ganking is so rare, why should a PvP flag be a problem? Do you fear that everyone sets it to off? That's not a very good argument in my opinion because it would just show that you fear the majority isn't interested in PvP, which is an argument for a PvP toggle. Then let me turn it around - ganking is so rare that asking for a PvP flag is like asking for a 20 limit on the motorway because crashes sometimes happen. The only place I might half consider it viable is at CGs (more like a 20 zone in a residential street). Then again, block already permits mitigation for that situation, not to mention closed modes, Mobius. A PvP flag is a bad solution looking for a problem.
That you need to ask shows that you don't have a clue how other people play the game. Which is fine, nobody knows everything. People need to realise that their view isn't universal though.

IIRC nobody asked to be invulnerable.Yeah me too, although most people are just (understandably) minding their own business even in Open, but it's absolutely possible and you don't even need to be invulnerable.![]()
This is not true and shows again that you don't know what you are talking about. Moebius isn't one group. And many people who aren't interested in PvP fly in Open, like myself. In Moebius you can already meet as many PvE-only people as there are in existence basically, minus a handful of PvEers who are only kept in Solo by the horror of the 0.00001% chance of their pixels getting shot at in said PG.
The reason I would like to see a PvP toggle is not that I want to play alone with my friends, I think you should understand that after so many pages...It only works in Open/big PG's as long as those people you meet accept your wing invite and even then only up to 4 people in total. It always works if you are in a PG with your friends (max. 3 of them).
All thease theories have already been debunked. I want a real reason. It's not immersion breaking, it's not exploitable, it doesn't take away unpredictable danger. People wouldn't become invulnerable. If anything, a PvP toggle would bring the game closer to Braben's vision. Not true, many people gave answers, including me, just scroll up a bit. In a nutshell, it's stupidly immersion-breaking, exploitable to hell, takes away all what little unpredictable danger exists in Open. I certainly don't want my instances to be diluted by invulnerable people pretending to play Elite: Hello Kitty Online or Elite: Safe Space.
Surprisingly, I don't.
Some people are obviously against it because it destroys griefing and ganking, which is good in my opinion.
