Today's Play

Spent a few hours today mentoring a friend who recently got the game. Within those few hours...

  • Multi-Crew didn't work, no matter what we tried;
  • We were fined after autolaunch time out;
  • Autolaunch rammed my ship into the side of the station causing damage to my ship;
  • Launching the Galaxy Map froze then crashed the game;
  • The Mission Board glitched out and crashed the game (it would load but still have the spinning icon as if it was still loading);
  • Several times we submitted to interdiction a few times and the NPC didn't appear;
  • On one occasion when an NPC did appear, that NPC effectively combat logged at 10% hull - just disappeared from view - then after I entered supercruise again, the same NPC interdicted me five seconds later and miraculously had a fully repaired ship.
That was just today.

Anyone remember the launch of a game called No Man's Sky? It was that riddled with bugs it was UNPLAYABLE.

What the hell is happening to our beloved game???

Oh dear.

Multicrew didn't work... Ok, we ALL know that multi crew is flaky, why do you bother? Seems to work for most people ok though, so there's probably something wrong your end.

Fined after autolaunch timeout... What does this even mean? The autolaunch is a brand new feature two weeks old. Considering how long it took then to get the docking computer right, glitches should not surprise you. Launch on your own? What neither of you can fly out through mailslot without help?

Autolaunch rammed my ship into the side of the station (and wait for it, for extra impact 'DAMAGING MY SHIP!' )... Firstly, vid or it didn't happen, secondly, try fitting some shields.

Launching the galaxy map has never frozen or crashed mine or anyone else's game that I know of (although I have had totally random crashes once or twice over the years, I'm not saying it doesnt happen) I'm starting to wonder about the health of your computer. We're all playing with the same files, so unless you have some odd hardware or are magical, that problem is on your end.

The mission board glitches out and crashed the game. Hm... I'm starting to see a pattern here. Whatever you do crashes tha game. Time for a new pc?

Several times submitted to an npc that never appeared, fair enough, that happens. Multiple times in a row? I'm struggling with that, but if you say so. Again such wide ranging instancing problems point to network issues that other players aren't experiencing in such an obvious way.

Disappearing npcs... Probably a heat sink or a wake you didnt notice.

There are issues, no doubt, but thank God the game is nothing like you describe.

Meh, we really need a sticky on this one.

K.I.S.S. explanation, this is how game works due to lack of persistence. I call it lazy IF-THEN programming.

IF you submit interdiction, THEN game creates instance, puts you in this instance and spawns (imprtant word) NPC. Then you fight.
IF NPCs hp drops below certain threshold, THEN NPC attempts to wake away (this is what you see). In reality, for game, successfull wake away = NPC despawn.

Now things start to be interesting as what you see and feel forks away from what game see and feel.

For you NPC jumped into SC, for game it's just a "state", there is no real NPC in SC, just an indicator. So when you submit another interdiction you get to square one...

All due to lack of persistence. Game does not save the NPCs status (hp, shields, etc) between instances, it simply makes and deletes. But when game spawns NPC, it is spawned in default state - which means full hp and shields. I've seen reports when CMDRs were pirating NPCs anbd they managed to escape just to be interdicted again. Same NPC (no other ship in system) but he managed to "heal" between interdictions, change name or ship type. Because game had a hiccup and virtual dice decided that your pirate lord target, who was flying AspX is now a Python.

Because why not.

To be fair, having used the Advanced Docking Computer for a while now, it is pretty obnoxious more often than not - last night for example, I tried to land at Bill Turner's base, the pad selected was below a bridge of sorts, autopilot decided it was a fake bridge so tried to steer right through it. Both landing and departing. Had to intervene otherwise I'd have been stuck there forever.

Another time, the waiting times when launching can be OTT, especially at busy stations. It also tried to create a second slot above the actual slot. Again, if I didn't intervene the station would've whacked my Cutter.

Still, E: D, despite all the bugs (and there are a LOT) >>>>> NMS.

The game is quite buggy on XBOne.
Mine does not crash at galaxy map, but quite frequently crashes when i try to open the System Map. Well, technically does not crash, but the circle keep rolling, my ship keeps going forward but no controls and no menus are working and i have to Home/Quit the game.
Then there are the sudden Quits-to-Home. No errors, nothing at all - i just find myself looking at Home Screen
Then there are the crashes when the image freezes while a sound is looping in the background - again Home/Quit is the only solution.
Quite rare lately are the Mission Board crashes as in circle keeping rolling - then again Home/Quit.

I'm playing daily and I encounter those above on an average of 1-3 times per week.
It's quite disappointing. I get it that PC's get a lot of variation in terms of hardware/drivers/etc so some instabilities might be understandable. But there should be no issues on consoles.

To be honest, I very rarely do get any crashes (playing on laptop), my issue is more with consistent framerates - can't work out if it's network related but it can be all over the shop and isn't consistent either (the very same scenario (ship, location, activity) can be buttery smooth in one session, and very choppy in another).

There was a really rough period back in January-February with those awful freezes but other than that, purely from a stability perspective, I've been lucky.

But I think the game was smoother and more stable overall pre 3.3, unless I imagine things.

Essentially as the game works fine on your PC, then none of the bugs I encountered is valid it seems.

No need for the tone or personal attack in what should be a friendly forum.

The tone is somewhere in the middle, I apologize for being mildly triggered by the deliberate sensationalism in the op, but the truth is the way you describe it is not really representative of the current state of the game.

You do have points, most of what you said 'happens', just not all the time or with the severity you implied. Once again I apologize for the slightly unnecessary venom I included with my dialogue, you encountered these issues and have a right to complain about them.

Agree re. the game being more stable pre-3.3. I'm all for new features and a redesigned login/startup screen (necessary?) - but FDEV must concentrate on fixing bugs, some of which are long-outstanding, and testing the updates prior to release.

The game is fine. It's your PC that's obviously rubbish. Either that or your router. Or very likely both. Noobs like you are ruining the reputation of this great game. Now go away.
Okay, thanks for that. Glad to know the game is perfectly fine and the players who encounter these bugs are noobs not people who have been playing since day one.

Please keep the personal attacks to yourself in future.

glad you didn't instruct him to buy another router. (i'm dead serious, i read that exact advice to an user from apple software support as a workaround for a software bug in safari that randomly failed to display images in a page).

by the same token, if it is so flaky why isn't it removed from the game?

and by the same token again ... if we do the same with every feature that is somehow buggy ... what will remain? :D

so you have really nothing to contribute to the item but are going to shill away anyway? cool.

yeah, mee too! :D

and a new router!! XDDD

that's so reassuring. thanks! :D

now seriously, aashenfox, what threw you out of bed this morning?

Love it.

Maybe FDEV could team up with a router manufacturer and offer discounts for the new routers we all need to buy to fix the bugs in the game? LMAO!

You'll noticed that some troll has 'suggested' to me that it's a router problem. So the game isn't bugged, we all just need new routers to magically fix the problems.

I've been busy flying my other spaceship around the last few days - did I miss anything?

Several sessions of Lego Worlds later....

All because I bought my grand daughter her very own pink controller...

To be fair to the OP, I came across most of the issues listed. Difference being I'm so used to them now that I'm not getting annoyed about them anymore - My mind is already at peace if the game runs without random frame drops and disconnects.

If something particular doesn't work (and frankly, more often than not, it doesn't, at least in my experience, and especially when trying out new stuff shortly after it was introduced and not patched yet), I'll do something else instead - thankfully Elite does provide a lot of options still.
