My speaking of mind has got me called troll many times, simply because I was as persistent as those presenting their argument to present my side of things, with a slug of twisted humour sometimes.

So I have decided to adapt this song.

I am a troll and I live in a hole:

End of the day Elite is a hard game to play. Yes we're all seasoned players and it may not seem it, but if you look at what you're actually doing with every click of a button it really takes a good deal of subconscious thought and a lot of time, effort and ingenuity to achieve any level of success.

Its from there you get people calling the game a grind-fest and complain that they just forked out on insurance because they missed another layer of the games complexity. (admittedly there's not enough communication from the game as to what and where those layers are.)

But I think it boils down to the games industry handing game-play out on a silver platter to the mainstream. The "Press x to win mentality".

Unfortunately Elite is an easy target for the mainstream, and with a game that provides what no other can at the moment, you'll get people disappointed that it doesn't conform to their ideals.

Then again all forums are like this. A vent-space.

I wish it was more toxic, if anything. Hate forums where everyone is polite and so very boring. Got a few boring sods here but thankfully enough othets to keep it at least midly toxic.

I found the debates in this forum to be pretty civil actually. Just remember to avoid those trigger words like "Griefing" or "Combat Logging" and... oops:D

Dangerous Discussion tends to be full of the traditional "whiners" and worst of the community; elitists, apologists, white knights, trolls, etc. We got the full spectrum.

As an Xbox One player I tend to stick to the ED for Xbox One forum. Better discussions with less personal attacks and sniping, and more cooler heads.

I wouldn't call it toxic, just passionate with a a healthy dose of opposing views. Could everybody try to get along better with one another even when they disagree though? Oh absolutely. I've been on nicer forums and I've also seen much worse. The key element seems to be how many polar opposite opinions exist amongst the forum goers. And also if everyone is generally united in a feeling of apreciation and support of the game itself. And most importantly how much of a sense of humour people have.

On the "nicer" forum that I was a member of for a long time there were a ton of polarising views about an online PvP strategy game that involved being a member of one 'team' vs the other 'team' - you generally were expected to belong to one camp or the other. A few people were accepted as 'neutrals' because they offered advice to all and showed no bias and/or generally just got everybody to laugh and unclench a little. Everybody however shared a common apreciation for the theme of the game, if not the direction the game took in the end. The theme was sci fi adventure and pretty much everybody could agree on their mutual love for that theme - even if they were bitterly opposed in terms of opinions about what the future of the game should be. Above all else everybody could be persuaded to laugh and joke about the theme and make fun of how the development of the game was reflecting the theme of the game with oppressed minorities, evil empires, extermination campaigns, etc. It had it's fair share of doom and gloom folks but people really liked it when someone came along and made light of the situation by posting something like a funny story that supposedly takes place in the games world, etc.

Ultimately people there apreciated a good laugh more than a good rage thread. And there's a lesson in there somewhere for us here in the ED forums.

I don't think the community toxic .. passionate at times but that's cool. It's alive?
People are free to table things that bother them, makes for a better game in the end I think.
And on top of that, you've got the groups; fuel rats, canonn, pirates, drabble competitions, MANY more, all positive.
Well said.

<blinks> That's sarcasm, right?

you know what...

The day Frontier release a controversial new "feature" that doesnt create a multi page thread arguing about it, is the day i know ED really is in trouble.

ITS A 10 YEAR GAME! you clueless noob dweeb!!!!!

....sorry, i couldn't resist adding some toxic sarcasm. :p
(feel free to sling some mud back my way ;))

The financial reports say 7 years, with 5.5 years remaining as of this year's report.

...you less lugnut!

(also good natured toxicity!)

OMG! They reduced the game plan from 10 years to 7???

Ok, I'm off to start an "Elite is doomed!" thread. (with a poll of course)

We have a great set of mods and clear rules. The truly toxic get educated fast.

Some people feel that increasing their level of discontent will spur action faster. Something like a person who yells his point thinking it adds weight to what they are saying. It doesn't, obviously.

Or we have a generation of "I want it now" people who have never had to wait for anything in their lives and get frustrated without instant gratification. Pick the one you feel is right.
