Toxic community. Why so?

Because some privilieged kids who don't understand what really matters in life invest most of their empty and powerless lives to achieving some sense of reward by playing Elite and have the means to be loud and vocal on a forum when ordinarily they'd be ignored.

I have a long memory, lack of patience, and a bit of an unstable thermonuclear temper personally. It's a pretty bad combination and it's a struggle to keep it all under control. Especially when I've offered advice and it gets ignored.

But I do try to be helpful first. Elite is one of those games where my ability to think laterally feels like it's rewarded and I've missed having a pure sandbox game where there is no hand holding, leaving me to fend for myself. It's a bit frustrating but once I feel like I've mastered something, it's very rewarding knowing something that no one can take away from me. It really feels like my game and my story and I love feeling like I'm shaping my own path.

So when things get conflicting, I get heated.

The game isn't perfect. I'm aware of that. But for me there is more replayability and so many ways to play that each day feels like a new adventure. I never know what's really going to happen next. Some days this works against me and I have to stop playing feeling depressed and dejected when a day doesn't go my way.

But tomorrow's a new one.

And here, there are plenty of other people that feel the same way so we clash.

But Elite is ours.

But what about my performance?

Considering that the player base is in the order of 1.5 million, statistically 1% of players become active on forums and of those 1% a few post occasional rants and a - literally - handful constantly post negatively on these forums.... That is one almight strong toxin you are experiencing!
I find it hard to feel sorry for the statistical minority. Shame FD listens to them, rather than dev their own game.

I have met a lot of players in game.
All of them nice , or at least fun.

Most just fly by.
Others jump out on sight of a player (good idea , fly as if you are hunted is a very good way to stay alive if you dont feel that you are in a position to win a fight)
And then I have had combat encounters (one great example was an epic fight when a CMDR wanted to kill me , no reason stated... but no reason needed I lost as I had to run away as my weapons did no damage do his shields)
Powerplay fights
and then of course the social ones ; CMDRs telling me that this system is nice , saying hi and all that good stuff.

Even the forums are very nice , compared to the horrors that was biowares ''social'' network that was nothing more than a place to bash devs and force them to quit there job... it was horrible and the last place a bioware fan would want to chat about games

To be fair there is not that much hate.
The ''DIS SUXXX MAN !'' stands out compared to feedback , opinion or praise.

I will say that this is one of the rare forums where users are very polit and often willing to help.

The only times it can get toxic is with haters or when a very important topic is being debated (PvP , Open/Solo , AI , Shiptransfer , tea)
But all in all everything remains civil , and it is very rare to see someone be outright insulted or what not.

Sorry for the poor grammar.

Purchases =/= active players.

I think a more accurate estimate is around 35,000 players, given the number of voters who participated in the Instant -v- Delay poll put on by Frontier.

I haven't run across any other players, yet in the game. If you lot play like you post here, I think I'd Just assume give it a pass.

So... you've no experience with other CMDRs in the game, but nonetheless believe you've got an informed opinion on what most of they are like. Ok then. ;)

HINT: Most of them are quite pleasant, a minor bit are rude, and another 2-3 I know are KOS.

Basically, like the real world - minus KOS, as that's not legal where I live.

do you really think FD do tho? Sure they may use the forums as a sounding board to float some ideas, but I very much doubt FD will change the direction of the game based just on these forums here...... IF they make a change, my money is on internally they feel it is for the best OR for the easiest dev time wise.

FD have made a lot of changes since the dev diaries and the DDF. FD officially may state it is for the better of the game.. in truth tho, my money is for the most part on it more being to do with cost of implementation......... and sometimes IF they think they can get away with cutting a corner, they will...

and then it is down to the more fanboy (girl) players to attempt to call them on it and remind them of the gold standard they set 3 years ago.

It seems like every time I visit this forum, there's some raging ... let's call it a "debate", going on. The fact that Someone recently felt inspired to make a thread called "The Positive 2.2 thread" speaks volumes.

It is, what it is. I have to wonder why, though.
It's really hard for me to believe that a game like this naturally attracted a toxic player base, and I definitely don't think that the people who are getting so hot here, are always that way. There's got to be something else at play.

Is this a new thing? From the language of the posts, I'd guess it's been going on long enough for the community to be thoroughly divided into adversarial groups several times over.

At this point, Has it just been generally accepted as the local etiquette, to meet opposition with nastynes?

Could it be something to do with the way the forum is arranged, or designed? Something else related? I don't know.

Maybe, it's something as simple as being a message board for a game with the word "Elite" in the title.
I wonder.

Quite the contrary, this game has about the nicest community I've met in any online game so far. Don't get fooled by all those complaint or 'The end of ED is nigh' or otherwise foolish threads. For a quite more positive experience, come over to the CG threads for example. We currently have a charity CG running in remembrance of a CMDRs recently-deceased Grandpa, find out about the background of this, read the responses and then reconsider the term 'toxic'.

For meeting nice people ingame, I would steer clear from Open for a while and join the Mobius Private Group instead, the game is much more fun when playing together. The community is one of the best parts of Elite. Period [noob]

I suspect a lot of the toxicity stems from players who started in the original release, and do not adapt to changes - especially when they lose their "I Win" buttons.
I've met only 3 live players to date, 2 Fuel Rats, both come to bail me out of a bad jump. The third was just scanning wakes for data, so I made him a few to scan.

Other than that, the galaxy is a really big place to get lost in, and it seems I have a predisposition to hang around the parts no one else does, which suits me just fine.

From the dawn of the forum we came; moving silently down through the threads, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of updates; when the few who remain will argue the smallest details. No one outside these forums even cares we exist. There can be only one (opinion)!

The internet is full of toxic sludge.

And I like it :D

I disagree. But I just said that to start an argument. ;)

I think anyone who thinks this place is toxic needs to play one or two games of DOTA, real quick. Be forewarned, you better check your wardrobe for some thick skin before you make that trip.

A moment of honesty.

I've called this forum toxic but it's for a myriad of reasons, most of them having to do with the dissenting opinion (read: the "new kids") being incredibly unpopular with the bulk of the forumites (read: the old guard/84'rs). That and I've been bashed by the mod team a few times for "trolling" and "baiting", having my posts deleted while the people who did the same to me were left alone.

Obviously it's my perspective and I don't hold any hard feelings against the mods for what they do. Hell, I don't hate anyone here. I enjoy the debates even if I can get a bit heated from time to time.
