UA Mystery Thread 3: The Canonn

Status
Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Something for the weekend

Lot's of interesting UA research going on this week. Haven't caught up with all of it yet.

In the meantime, I've hacked together a sort of UA triangle editor / viewer inspired the UA_Draw tool by Anjin (and subsequent UA_Draw modifications by RedWizard).

Thought I'd share it here in case anyone finds it useful for investigating/verifying UA morse.

It's available on the following Paper.js sketch URL: here

DISCLAIMER: Only tested on Firefox

Screenshot of the tool in the spoiler below.
ua_editor.png

I've minified it purely for space reasons, but will put it up on GitHub someplace (or the Canonn GitHub we have one) once I've cleaned it up a bit. In the meantime suggestions via PM welcome!

The URL is rather large since it also contains the encoded script. You can also visit http://sketch.paperjs.org and paste in the code contained within the spoiler tag below.

Documentation in next spoiler tag:
The inital view shows presets on the right-hand side, and the code window on the left. The console is on the bottom left, which is where your current edited code will be echod so you can copy/paste it elsewhere.

Click within the grid to place dots. The first two dots can be toggled, the third commits the triangle. This assumes you're drawing triangles, but of course you can disable this by setting allowToggleVertex to false in the config and it'll draw a triangle with any points you give it (even if two share the same vertex). If you change the vertex setting you'll need to run the code again for it to take effect.

Each completed triangle generates a code entry below the grid. By default these are appended to the sequence.

Highlighting the code highlights the corresponding triangle in the sketch. Clicking on the code removes the triangle.

To insert a code, click on the appropriate vertical bar between the codes to it activate that as the insert point for the next code. This allows you to insert/remove triangles to your heart's content. Clicking anywhere in blank space clears the active insert point and codes will be appended to the end of the sequence as before.

Each time you complete a code, the entire sequence so far is echod to the console on the lower left. This is so you can copy the text there and paste it elsewhere.

Hit the "<< CLEAR >>" button to clear the grid.

Clicking on any of the presets will clear the grid and insert the pre-canned squence (these are from rizal72's post here).

If you make any changes to the code, such as presets or otherwise, hit the run button at the top right of the code window. This is also handy for resetting the view and script state.

Have fun!

UPDATE

I think I got it: the UA points to a point at a distance from Merope 1. If you're far (<100LY), it seems to point at a place very far from Merope. The closer you get, the closer it seemingly points to Merope. It never actually points straight at it, and in the system it will be point off the center of the star. If you are really close to the star, it'll point to a different place of the star. If you're further from Merope 1 but in the same system it'll point to a place besides the star, and the further you are the further this place seems to be. So basically it points to Merope with an offset regardless of your location. The radar in Merope works intermittently. Every other system on the way and while experimenting around Pleiades works perfectly except for Merope.

I'm stumped. I have to enjoy a wonderful dinner with my girl think about this for a while, I'll report back in later. :)

A morning of investigating Warkushanui found nothing unusual at any of the stations in the system (I visited them all and no signs of irregularities, no CG, no unusual missions) and the only signal source worth mentioning was a Medical Transport convoy. I followed the convoy to Ernutef, where it dropped out of supercruise at Sohl Port - and was fired upon and destroyed by the outpost itself! Sadly it did not drop any cargo. I'm not sure why the outpost opened fire but it did so as soon as the convoy came within range. The ships in the convoy did not return fire and the Python came to a halt next to the station as if it were awaiting docking permission. Very strange.
I'm calling it a day for further investigations. I hope anyone else continuing to investigate the events there has better luck.

ANOMALY DETECTED

UPDATE

My scanners no longer work in Merope, the whole system is dark. The UA does not point towards the main star, nor has it been pointing at the system at various stops along the way. When passing the Pleiades nebula the UA does point backwards.

This thing needs further inspecting: so what about the original behavior of the UA pointing always at the Star when deployed everywhere in Merope? Did FD change something remotely perhaps? I must check it myself, later...

Lot's of interesting UA research going on this week. Haven't caught up with all of it yet.

Are you certain your scanners haven't been damaged by the UA?

That wouldn't explain why I only experience issues in Merope, and nowhere else. Also, Pretzil experienced the same without carrying an AU... Will check my scanners later to be sure, thanks for the tip!

Can you test a AU there? I find it weird that shortly after that system starts glitching the AU behavior changes...

Yo !
Never spoke of anything here, the account is brand new, but i saw some test list to do and all ... And a friend just told me that he found a UA near the Pleiades ( SYNUEFE QT-G B30-2 ), it was spurting some blue thingies, like spores ( common thing with UAs i think i saw ? ) and he didnt tried to get what was the Morse code about cuz the Cobra of others players already got scanned. A while after he passed by a blackhole so he wanted to try something : Drop the UA in the blackhole.

Result : None. He just lost the UA.

That's all. I'm personnaly of my way to Sagittarius A* so i cant really help but if you got questions you can find me under the same name IG.
See ya and good luck on your researches ;)

OK People, if the new UA behavior will be confirmed, together with the new Merope "BLACK OUT", here my opinion on what's happening next:
they are starting "Thargoidizing" the System: A Thargoid Station could be popping up in Merope soon.
Merope is the bridgehead of an incoming invasion...

I've heard rumors wispering a Thargoid Faction seems to be already present in game...

PREPARE YOURSELVES!

It just took 10 days for me to catch up the threadnought! :D

Congrats to MJK!

And:

I've just gotten off my butt and headed over to Gurragchaa Gateway aannnnnnnndddd nothing......no problems there that were stated in the article.......I may check out the other place if someone hasn't already?

Went there yesterday with a UA I took before. While landing I recognized that my docking computer was stuttering and my ship was looking a few times up/down and I got very afraid, but it landed than without crash. I never saw such a behavior with a docking computer but I have to say I use it just since a month. After landing I saw my dc was at 69%, maybe because of the long trip with a UA in hold. I will go online now and try agin.

I hope it's not a bug...

Pls report it to make sure what it is.

Maybe some off topic things here:

Good evening Commanders
...
p.s. So long, and thanks for all the rep!

Noooooooo.... Derthek you will be back, I am sure!

what's wrong with the long range missions in Varati???

Maybe they invented them to corrupt our hearts and scientifical investigations? Damn fed fdevs?

I like what you've done with the slow-mo. How much have you slowed down playback, and did you interpolate frames to smooth out the frame transitions?

I think thats interpolated. The doubled ship looks so. Remember those 13 slomos (link) from beta at 10x slowed down without interpolated frames, except those interpolations happend while importing into video editor. Beta behavior hasn't changed at release.

I've been to Merope some minutes ago, with an UA. Everything is perfectly the same, the System is all scanned as usual, all stars and planets selectable, UA pointing straight at the very center of the Star. I took a picture from 15 mt perfectly aligned with UA and star's center.

I've scanned all the System long before the servers issues with exploration data, so I really think all the problems some of you are having, depends on those issues, as Dommarraa pointed out before.

Are these whispering coming from being alone in the depth of space? Or somewhere else?

This almost sounds like something in the vicinity of Merope is warping space time, hence the curved "shortest path through space time" creates an offset that becomes larger with greater distance. This would be an object with a mass density like a black hole. But if it was bending light this much, then you'd probably see space distorted the closer you got to Merope. If the object was not centered on Merope, then the star would be wobbling a bit in place if not outright orbiting a common center of mass. If the wobble was small enough then the orbit lines would be inside the star.

Ooooo? Are you going to share with the whole class?

What can I say... being a programmer could be helpful sometimes. There's no need to decompile anything, being it a violation of EULA rules, and I don't like cheating at all, but always being so curious on how FD made this awesome masterpiece. Moreover those at FD are very good on hiding things.
A good Hex editor could be helpful just to spot some hints.

There are 4 variables in StellarForge, for creating Stations: Federation, Empire, Alliance, and... another one starting with a capital T... ;)

I hope no one got offended by my curiosity...

Ahhh I've heard of this before. It makes sense though. We all knew Thargoids would be a thing eventually. I thought it was stated somewhere the UAs are -not- thargoid though. Thargoid tech isn't new or all that mysterious, figured some galnet article would mention 'this resembles thargoid tech we've seen in the past' or something. Instead the article on may 4th said they couldn't figure that out. If it is Thargoid, that may mean they'll return with stuff that looks a bit different from octagons.

Remember Braben's words. (June 2014 i think)

I do hope. I think they [Thargoids] are great fun. I don’t like it when Star Trek with the stick on ears and stick on foreheads just annoyed me because they are all basically humanoids. In fact, all basically American humanoids. I think if you are going to have an alien make them alien. For me they do that. That’s why I want them to be as terrifying and as alien as we can make them

Rizal didn't you mention investigating something? You said it was related to being 'close' to something back in 1.3. What did FD say we were close to back then? If there's something to figure out, maybe its more obvious than we think.
