UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

Found 2 UAs in Aries Dark Region GW-W-D1-52 - within minutes of eachother. What should I do with them? I'm sitting listening to them and observing the green and purple gas(?) emissions coming out. Does anyone know what the blue sparks are, too?

The music is distinctly creepy, too. The UA sounds slightly higher-pitched when near a star, and it points straight at Merope.

The UA self-illuminates

...The UA appears to either be lit up or dormant...

Probably splitting hairs, but I'd like to qualify the definition of "lit up". From what I've observed it's true that the markings in the UA are always either lit up or not. But the UA itself seems to be somewhat self-illuminated. I noticed this last night, when I positioned myself so that a planet was between me and the system star. So basically I was behind the planet's dark side. I jettisoned a UA there, with the intention of testing if the markings that light up when the UA "screams" look any different in complete darkness, or if any other areas of the UA light up more subtly in a way not easily perceived when it's being lit by other light sources.

What I noticed is that the UA was always visible, even though the planet was completely blocking the light of the star. So instead of it becoming a black silhouette against the background I could always see its surface in colour, which is mostly green.

Probably not significant, but I thought it was interesting. Are there any reports on the Thargoids displaying some form of bioluminescence?

WARNING: IMMERSION BREAKING/NERDINESS BELOW:
Or perhaps it's just that one of the devs forgot to zero the ambient channel on the UA shader ;)

I'm about to enter the Aries Dark Region. Any tips on what I should do if I find a UA? I've got an unshielded, weaponless Asp.

I found one last night returning from the Pleiades, about 2-3 jumps later. The Strong Signal Source was actually right near the star as I fuelled; however, you might just find one right out in the far reaches of the system - unless any of the more experienced folk here can advise.

POST EDIT: I found mine in Hyades Sector DB-X C1-19.

Probably best to leave them there, or maybe grab and take them to a nearby Black Market and sell them.
Until you have suitable gear for carrying them around, it isnt a good long term plan.
Just at the moment there isnt a great deal of science to do with them, unless you can think of something!

Did a bit of amateur observing. The UA obviously emits a purple gas-like substance constantly with a green gas-like substance coming out in pulses at intervals of 10 seconds each. Pulses are strangely consistent with the execution of the whale hum, the purring, the other noise and the beginning of the morse emissions.

Has anyone tested if the color of the gases change depending on your proximity to a star? If they don't, the substances are probably toxic/corrosive gases which is why they corrode your ship. This would also indicate that the UA is some sort of biomechanical machine.

On my day off i decide to park my trusty FDL, jump into my Python and head off to Warkushanui to see what all this UA business is all about.
After all, i've been involved in my groups PVP activities so much lately that i thought i should mix it up and have a snoop around down there.

I jump into the system and immediately get a weird crash to desktop and the system is not responding, so i have to do a soft shutdown.
Try a restart and nothing. My machine is dead. After going through all the usual hardware checks, clearing the bios, flashing a bios etc it seems my mobo has died.
A new one arrives tomorrow..

Was it the UA? Discuss...

Sounds like the 21st century version of the Mycoid virus. :)

I just noticed something really important. 'Arcanonn' has 8 letters. Octagons have 1, 2....8 sides! THARGOIDS CONFIRMED!

ANYWAYS,

So warky got worse, but 49 Ari is still the same? Anyone know if and how they were treated differently (UA sales)? And there are no health issues this week? Anywhere? UA radiation = miracle cure for disease and hunger? Are these just fancy cases of alien nutella?

So I snatched the UA from ADA and hightailed it out of there. I'm logged out at Nganji and I'm gonna try and bring it to Christian Dock later. I've never smuggled before - fingers crossed it'll do something.

Referring to when the initial sound comes on the gaps between the.... gills/ribs/pods and the ridges on the "head" illuminate and turn yellow. The observation there is that it is always with the beginning of the transmission and that the illumination starts from the "bottom" three pod area and works its way up the tip of the other end... which points towards Merope.

I think Wishblend did some research on the colors and their patterns ... (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=162998&page=43) but that was 1.3 i believe .... the morse changed in 1.4 - its possible the pulses have too.

I found my first ever UA 30 minutes ago after about 5 minutes waiting
(already updated google docs
Arietis Sector BV-Y b5BEKTOP 3APEMOB146.61YesYesabout 5-100:-104:-203
)

Didn't pick it up - just observed and gently nudged it a few times - it restored its orientation back toward Merope each time
I'm in unshielded, unarmed sidewinder

Interesting thing is - I can see the reflection of moving artefact and fairies in my pilots helmet glass. -Never new that there are mirror surfaces in ED before :)

@EAGLE5 - feel free to add one(all) of these to your post to illustrate UA size:

PS: don't worry about knocking sounds - it's because I was in FA-OFF mode and had some very low relative speed to UA :D

Ok... I'm back. Sorry I didn't get my last post edited in time... it would seem that I deleted every audio and video clip aside from ONE... so I had to go out, find another UA, capture the video, edit the video, copy the sound, edit the sound, record another video of my editing the audio, then edit that video... and finally upload it.

A few things first....
-I am not at all the best at editing audio. My skill &/or experience is limited, so I've never really had to clean up audio or reverse-engineer someone elses, so yeah.. I didn't do a good job. ;)
-Below is a link to a youtube video I just got done uploading... I didn't know how else to better explain myself, so it's more or less a video showing everyone the 'basics' of what I was doing/how I was editing the audio when I got the idea for this in the first place.
-The purpose of this is because I can't get it out of my head! I am hoping that someone with uber audio skills will watch this and then try to do a better job with it than I did! Even if it means I am wrong about the whole "vocals" thing!!!!
-The audio editing software I used in this example is called "Audacity", it's full featured FREE, so if someone wants to give some audio editing a crack... there you go. Google search for it and voila. I'm not familiar with Audacity, I only downloaded and installed it for the first time a few days ago.... I'm more familiar with Sony's Sound Forge, and even then the few versions I own are 10 and prior... and I'm missing more than half my plugins.
-The UA that this audio is from was a free floater I found some 1,200LS away from the star, no planets. The audio between a floater and one that has already been scooped up & then jettisoned is very different, the jettisoned one will have an increasing-tone in addition to a higher pitched & very constant buzzing sound. I flew past 2 or 3 SSSs before stopping at this one... just so I could get 1k LS away or more.
-Lastly, I was using Shadow Play to capture my using Audacity... with push to talk for my mic... so I had to edit a few dead spots out.... not exactly "pro" if you get my meaning! ;)

So, here ya go:

There.

If anyone sets out to do this on their own, as someone else had already suggested... it's best to go way out into DEEP deep space and away from stars/planets before trying to listen to the audio, because planets and stars will increase the background noise you hear. Also, using the "confidential" camera is one way to easily eliminate ship sounds, but know that if you do use the camera, your will then get some background audio (almost like music) that you CAN'T disable... mess around, that's all I can say.

Let me know what you all think please. I want to either get motivation to delve into this more.... or to drop it (the search for vocals that is)... it's bad enough that I'm convinced there's also a very feint "heart beat" of sorts in the audio as well... but I've only heard that in a jettisoned UA, and it's harder to hear than what I describe in this video so... not gonna go on about that :p

Otayo...let me know! Thanks!

Over at Merope... Is it just me, or is the UA glowing like hell? Dropped it off at emergency brake limit. Interestingly, cargo hatch blew as soon as I did that.

You're the first person I've seen that pointed out a difference between the loud whale noises. I always thought it was the same sound repeated. The sound a UA makes is generated depending on the ship you fly. It loops indefinitely before you pick it up. You're seeing that the whale sections are different. That raises some questions.

Are they consistently different?
How many different whale sections are there?
How do they alternate/repeat?
Do you get different whale sections for flying a different ship?

If there is a message there, vocals or not, there needs to be some kind of consistency to work off of. I also noticed there were two sounds going on. One is a growling base that stutters and the other is the whale call type thing. Wonder if some Audio magician can split those two apart somehow. Whether this is a thing or not you did a good job with your analysis and that video +rep.

It looks like that because of Merope's color and brightness. Take it to a neighboring star that resembles Merope, and it should glow the same.

I have more or less followed this thread (less because of the sheer amount of posts) so excuse my naive question but has anyone ever tried to see if the sounds could be associated with some insects, since I think I've read that the Thargoids (I'm assuming these UAs are associated with them) are an insectoid race?
