It appears that the thrusters are pointed down fairly significantly making me thing it's not a smaller planet/moon. Maybe something closer to Earth size.

Technically it's DA-OFF.
I don't think those thruster directions have to do with drive assist. I thought that was more like cruise control.
The father North you get, the higher the suicide rate, so the answer to your (unasked) question would appear to "they don't".

That green panel on the right shows a lot of similarity with the UA panels, except in solid green
At one point some time ago they said you would likely be able to craft different coloured lasers, if that is somehow important to people and an aspect of meaningful, deep, engaging gameplay (it's not for me).
Monocoloured lasers are dull, have friendship-colours!
Hmm if the game will update, i might wander over to merope and bring some anti-ground weaponry.
