unfair npc's

It feels like the OP is attacking Pythons in a Sidewinder. I'd suggest going back to medium or high security nav beacons or high RESs and attack to the smaller wanted ships initially (Eagles, Adders, Haulers, other Sidewinders) and build from there. Be careful round anything rated dangerous, deadly or elite as well.
Just saying... I used to confuse Pythons, Vipers and Anacondas in my early days :S

I'd imagine you found out that you were against an Anaconda fairly quick though!

I remember being disappointed that I couldn't kill NPC pirates in Pythons that interdicted me on data delivery runs in my unengineered Courier. Kept trying, kept failing. Eventually I decided that maybe I should just evade the interdictions until I got a bigger ship. I seemed to do ok with picking the right battles though (e.g. leave the wanted elite Anaconda alone unless system security are already pounding it).

Whats your ship, build and what are you attacking?
an asp explorer set up for mining for self defence i had 2 sm burst and 2 med auto's, 5c bio shield, 5A thrusters,5b power plant, and 4a distibutor. i just want a fighting chance, my weapon loadout wont put much of a scratch on a fitted conda so i got to be able to survive long enough to jump or to shoot him alot, but 1 hit from his class 4 and my shields are gone and half my hull not to mention modual failure and im mass locked so takes forever to charge so he blows my ass to space dust along with 2 hours of mining surplus. just send something i can fight or have a chance to beat i had already been spacedust twice so i scaled down the minning eqpt for better weapons but still seriously out gunned somehow he pulls me out of super cruse in a few seconds and 1st shot im crippled before i can even get my boost going. send a DBS or FED drop, something in the same class for me to fight or give me a chance to jump away

i wasnt attacking anyone, and i have an expert combat rating so i know better then to take on a conda in this ship

IMO the AI is better than ever. As for NPCs being unfair, I've taking down many a medium and large ship in my humble, barely engineered Eagle during this last CG.

I'm sorry OP, I am really, really sorry, but I think you just need to "git gud". 🤷

The Asp explorer is a quite big and clumsy ship, easy to hit even for an anaconda. 2 small bursts and 2 medium multis won't put a dent into its shields unless heavily engineered. a plasma hit from a huge slot will take most of your shields out on its own, but can be dodged - what weapons did the anaconda use?. Mining ships don't really profit from the regen of a bi-weave, better stick with A-rated shields. a litte hull reinforcement also goes a long way for survival. Still, it is a mining ship, don't expect to put up a fight against a bigger combat ship, learn how to run (submit, hyperjump instead of supercruise, don't fly in a straight line while charging but stay close, use heat sinks, chaff, if shields are down silent running)

Was it maybe a player ship (hollow symbol on the radar)? those deal significantly more damage than NPCs (contrary to what you stated) and can oneshot a paper asp.
You can't get expert at combat without destroying NPCs, so I guess it isn't as impossible as you said?
unless he shot many skimmers.

Smells like 0 pips in sys.
Pip management is essential, and it's not always easy to do it when you are
(a) not used to it;
(b) under stress of attack;
(c) haven't got keys, or joystick buttons set up to change them quickly.

Full pips to shields (SYS) hardens them against attack, then quickly change them to ENG to give some effort to boosting away from the enemy. But that also requires knowledge of boosting ... and a button set up to do that.

Then jump away.

A lot of survival in this game, even for 'experts' is about running from trouble and jumping to safety. Combat can only be engaged once your ship is well armed and well protected. Even then, you need to know when to run.

You sure it was an NPC and not a player? Though even G5 players can't one-shot me.

The only reason for an NPC to attack you is if you are running a mission or carrying cargo and refuse to give them some. If you're running a mission, make sure you're not taking on missions that exceed your ability. Running an Elite courier mission unprepared is a sure way to get killed, nothing unfair about it.

Some basics:

1: an Asp is one giant target- its a massive ship thats incredibly easy to hit. Its modules are quite exposed and prone to being hit as well.

2: Your shield is not good for sustained damage- if your goal is to soak up attacks giving you time to escape you want as thick a shield as possible with a few boosters to further chunk things out.

3: You could simply give the pirate what he wants and he'll go away too.

4: Unless you know what you are doing, don't take on larger ships. If you are not confident stack the odds in your favour and take on weaker ships until you are proficient.

5: Be aware of ships in your instance. Cycle though contacts and anything pointed towards you that is not security assume is a pirate. Plan ahead if this is the case if the ship has a high rank and is a combat vessel.

6: Invest in engineered engines- they'll save you a lot and are worth it.

7: Don't think every fight is winnable- its not. Running away and knowing when to run is a vital skill.

8: Important! Hollow triangles are DANGEROUS- never, never turn your back on them as they are players with guns deployed. Always think of escape routes if they point towards you if you are flying in a rickety ship.

dont feed this troll guys
How do you know he's a troll instead of a newbie?

Probably because the OP says.....

so far ive played this game for about 2 months and have loged in over 5 weeks playing time

That means the OP has dedicated their entire existence to Elite, leaving only 9hrs a day to sleep, eat and sh*t. That kind of dedication should have made the OP a much better player and way further along than a mining Asp.

Then the OP claims to be Expert at combat yet gets blown up left and right in a pretty thin skinned ship. I'm still not buying into the lack of progress with 840 claimed hours in the game.

Just sayin'.

I feel it appropriate to speak to this as I am fairly new to the game and in recent weeks have been getting way more serious about playing. My son and I have found a certain level of joy and excitement playing and learning together. Though for me the learning curve feels a lot steeper than it appears to be for him... most likely age; but I digress!

So, the issue of NPC's being hard to kill? I find this just the opposite. I believe once you get some practice and learn how to outfit your ship properly they are easy, even if they are a couple ranks above me. I just reached Novice Combat rank and can usually take down an NPC rated at competent with no issue, and have been known to go nose to nose with a master.

Beyond that I will not target NPC's if i'm alone and they are in a wing AND they are rated higher than myself. I will however go after them if there are NPC's fighting on my side and when this happens there is real potential to make great bounties!! I took down a Master Anaconda with security forces and made close to 100K.

So, moral of the story is learn your limits. Push your limits and enjoy!! But I can promise you they are not unbeatable by any stretch of the imagination.

If I were in that Asp and mining away, as soon as that Conda got close, or worst-case started to scan me, I'd be running away. You should be able to outrun it fairly easily, and once you're 3km out, most of their weapons won't reach you.

If you need to jump but they're masslocking you, high-wake to another system, instead of just going to supercruise, and defeat the masslock that way.

An Asp Explorer with a 5C biweave doesn't have much shielding. I'd slap some boosters on it for sure, and likely consider installing a 5A.

I love biweaves, but they're for endurance in repeated or prolonged fights. In a ship where you're looking to survive long enough to run, they're not good because none of their strengths come into play.

Combat-mining in an Asp only really works in RES's with heavy police presence. If I were you, I would stick to mining low or normal RES's or non-RES spots with no NPC's.

Combat mining is an absolute blast, but you want either something smaller, with more speed and agility, or something bigger, like at least a Challenger or either Krait. The Asp is in a bad spot for combat mining.

guys i was'nt trying to fight anyone i got interdicted and blasted befrore i could even get my engines up to speed. and i know everyone has been through this also, i've seen to many posts on the same topic. this is probibly the best and most indepth game made to date. it s absolutly incredible what they have done, but at the end they got lasy or something and did not write a simple path of programing to balance the npc'sattacking players. there is no way a small ship set up to grind out the hours needed to advance in this game can defend or defeat the fully powered npc's and if you say you did your lying. yes you got past it and so will i, but it still should be fixed so hours of grinding stop being waisted time for the new people playing and yes i am a new guy to the game, and i have advanced quickly so im thinking im not that bad of a player. i am niether ignorent or stupid there is a imbalance to the programing, if you want to say its just like real life where you may just get your head blown off by some while walking down the street or killed in a car wreck then whats the point of it being a game, games by deffinition are a break from real world. i will bet anything there would be alot less people who quit this game and alot less broken controlers and keyboards as well, if this issue was corrected.

Heh, fair enough, I didn't do the math and he hadn't told that he ranks Expert when I posted my comment.
