Ungulate Talk

oh

well yeah because in the case of latinamerica there are other types of animals that are much more interesting to get, specially birds, monkeys, rodents and arboreal mammals.

most ungulates we could get from latinamerica are pretty much straight up clones: another tapir, another wild camelid, another deer. Not that they are not important or interesting but other animals take the spotlight because are more unique and pressing to diversify the southamerican roster.

I want the brazilian tapir and the vicuña/guanaco but we already have a latinamerican tapir and two camelids.
i want a pudu and marsh deer, but with a full Americas pack the elk and musk ox take the spot.

that said people do list the pudu, guanaco and vicuña quite often in their line ups.
I got you for sure I was just surprised no one took that shot yet

If we didn't get any more Latin American ungulates, I'd be ok with that even though I want more. I mean we have all the basics pretty much: Tapir, Peccary and not one but two camelids (even if they are domestic). And even if they aren't ungulates you can toss in the capybara and anteater as other large docile animals that commonly get mixed with them. Really the biggest gaps in this area aren't true ungulates but animals like the rhea.

With all that being said if we had extended support I'd like to see more, particularly I would want to see the wild camelids make it in as even though I can live with using the llama and alpaca as substitutes it would be nice to have the "proper" versions. Deer are the only group really missing and its not one I'm too bothered about since they are basically absent from zoos outside of their native ranges, I'd only like to see white-tailed deer because of the versatility or the pudu because more small ungulates is always great. I'm also open to the idea of a second peccary for variety sake just because I quite like them. As for the lowland tapir? Eh, I've grown to be more than fine with the Baird's but if we did get it I'd be pleased and probably end up using it more.

Anyway if I had to pick one SA ungulate to add I would pick the guanaco because Patagonia needs all the rep it can get.

Ungulates dont really feature heavily in ideas for SA/LATAM packs, which isnt really suprising for multiple reasons.
1. We have the majority of the prominent ones already in game
2. Most of the possible future inclusions are pretty similar to exisiting animals (lowland tapir, chacoan peccary, guanaco), so desire for these is generally lower
3. South america isnt particularly rich in ungulates in the first place in contrast to something like africa where they have a very strong presence both in nature and zoos.

Still, i think it would be foolish to expect a pack focused on south america to skip over ungulates completely. So i think atleast one being there is pretty much inevitable, and atleast two is probably more than likely. If i had to make a guess its gonna be the pudu and either lowland tapir or one of the camelids

Idk I think if it is Latin America then no ungulates is more likely. I could definitely see one being added though

I have been to a good number of zoos where they might have a Latin America section and no ungulates. And as @Marvinb said most of the big ticket ungulates are already in game. Not to mention the big draw of South America are the birds, monkeys, fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates. All of the major megafauna outside of a few are already in game.

I still think it would be good to get at least one to two ungulates in the next pack. Personally if it had to be a Central to South America ungulate I would want a pudu or the tapir. I’ll admit I’m partial to a new tapir species.

I would be shocked if there isnt any tbh. I guess we have to wait and see
Maybe the agouti/mara could take the ungulate spot. I know they are rodents and not ungulates, but they kind of look "similar" to ungulates in the sense of being terrestrial herbivores (you know what I mean).

I would absolutelly be on board for a South american deer or the Brazilian tapir for a potential Latin America, however i'm still more interested in other animals, for example, i woud much prefer that frontier use the effort to make an Marsh deer on the greather rhea, red legged seriema or red footed tortoise.

in other words i woudn't mind another ungulate, but if i could make a chooice i would pick something else.

Which tbh would still be two fine choices.

The pudu is a genuinly great animal to have to expand on the small ungulate roster and represent the temperate region of south america, while both brazillian tapir and a wild camelid are not just very common zoo animals but both got their own little upsides , most importantly the cool wild vs domesticated dynamic for the camlids and the tapir could hopefully bring a diving update for the tapirs, which would be pretty neat. Is that cooler then a monkey? No but it defenetly does elevate them above filler carnivoran tier like bush dogs. The pack most likly would be in best case 3 slots for monkeys or birds, 2 carnivorans and 2 ungulates so something like coati, ocelot, pudu and either guanaco/vicunja or brazillian tapir would be a decent roster for those fillers, aslong as the 3 other picks slap

I just noticed that theres no Mara in this pack and while i dislike that it does feel like what frontier would do sadly

Ok guys news approaching soon! Let’s play a game! Everyone give one guess for an ungulate to be in the next pack! The first one to get it right wins! If there’s multiple ungulates then you’ll both win. I’ll have 1st 2nd and 3rd rankings if multiple people guessed the correct one but was slower. Good luck! Only one guess is allowed per person so make sure you pick one you’re confident in!

(Guessing no ungulates is also a viable guess)

Personally if we get anything imma say it’s the Blackbuck. But my guess doesn’t count so feel free to guess that as well to win!
What I want: Southern pudu
What I think we'll get: elk (wapiti)

Well in an ideal world a latin America pack won't contain a single ungulate although I think we might end up getting the Southern Pudu

2 to 3 species:
Cold:Musk ox/Kiang
Temperate: PD deer/Sika deer
Subtropics:Tufted deer/Muntjac
Savanna:Blackbuck/Gaint eland
Tropical:Gaur/Lowland anoa
