Plan a route 130-150 ly from merope, pack a ADS and DSS and go exploring while keeping an eye out for USS and farm your UA. Somewhat similar to an exploration run. Palin is an explorer engineer afterall and the benefits of corrosive resistant cargo racks + grade 5 thrusters should not be easily accessible.

Understandable that some don't like the work/time aspect needed, i for one like it and feel it's in the spirit of doing something exploration-ish. Even though it could have been implemented with more alternatives - like the aforementioned "bring me 3 intact UA at the same time" or similar.
Still, i can't shake the feeling like most that complain - (and now look to farm a single source by logging in/out) rather have an easy mode option? The universal "pay me some $" bore? Just wondering. Where's the sense of accomplishment in that then?

My main issue with the unknown fragments is that there is absolutely no indications in the game to suggest where or even how to find them.

This is an insane issue to have in a game. Professor Palin is supposedly the foremost expert on the Unknown Artefact, but the         can't even be bothered to give you any kind of hint or suggestions as to where to find what he needs. Need Soontil Relics? They're probably in Soontil. Need Panite? Well, it's listed in the market place, and there it tells you it can only be mined. Kamitra Cigars? Probably in Kamitra. Landmines? They're in the market place, and that'll tell you where to find them.

Modular Terminals? Sort of the same problem, because you can't find any info on them if you don't have any to begin with.

Lavian Brandy? Sort of the same problem.

Meta-Alloys for Felicity Farseer? Exactly the same problem.

This is beyond moronic. The moment you HAVE to go outside the game to find critical information for your progression, the game fails. This is one of the biggest failings in things like PowerPlay and background simulation work as well.

I thought this was crap too, but it turns out I was wrong, at least about the Soontill Relics:

2 hours, 2 UA's (equals to 6 fragments due to last patch changes)... screw this, this is rubbishhit

Edit: was      ing like a little girl on RNG... Tried again today and got everything rather quickly... :) BTW, if you pick up UA'a and then jetison them and let them die they will drop 2 fragments upon dying. Tried it two times and got 4 fragments...

I just found all i needed around HIP 14479 -8.Logging on and off it took about an hour, the 2 fist only gave 1 UA. each.

Well thanks for the tip.

its 360ly from Merope though.

Ah, and the Pleiades JC-U B3-2 crashed conda? Noth there, just wasted three hours on those very coordinates, logged in and out, nothing.

Maybe the only way indeed is grinding, and forgetting about those dirty thrusters for now.

Like so many contributors here, I'll chime in that some of what we're forced to do is downright unconscionable. When FDev fixes their colossal error in the Engineers implementation, I might continue with it. But, FDev, here's the harsh truth. I'd seriously rather go to work at a job I don't like than go spend 7 hours flying around in circles hoping that the game will randomly reward me for the effort. At least that way I'm interacting with people, moving my body around, having chats at the water cooler. You guys forgot something very important. This is a video game. Video games are supposed to be fun, and are certainly not designed to mimic the worst of our grinding jobs in the real world. It truly sucks. Please fix it. If you're insistent on forcing us to do what so very few of us want to do in this increasingly failing experience, then please just implement storage.

To be honest, the only reason that I'm working towards Palin right now, is that I want his corrosive-resistant cargo racks:p
Still need a couple of 1000'sLy for the final invite, but 1or 2 gaming sessions, and it's done.

Neither the modular terminals for Qwent, nor the unknown fragments for Palin were a struggle...the only real grind was getting the Sirius permit (1 week).

Thanks to everyone in this thread who helps expalin about HIP 14479. In SC with throttle just under the 'blue zone' I managed to get all my Unknown Fragments to unlock Palin in about 1.5 hours (19:40 to 21:12).

My input on getting 1 or 2 fragments from each UA is as follows:

1st UA) Stopped to watch, multi cannoned the head from right above the head and got 2 fragments. - 6 Unknown Fragments on my ship
2nd UA) Came in too fast, hit it down to 5% health, shot the rest in the head got 1 fragment. - 9 Unknown Fragments on my ship
3rd UA) Bumped it down to 80% as I arrived, shot the rest, got 1 fragment - 12 Unknown Fragments on my ship.
4th UA) Carefully lined up above the head, shot it and got 2 fragments - 18 in my ship.
5th UA) Carefully lined up again, shot in the head for 2 fragments - 24 in my ship.
6th UA) Entered the Anomaly Detected SS. Something glitched and the UA danced around my radar and disappeared. - 24 fragments and 1 frustrated CMDR in my ship.
7th UA) Carefully lined up again, shot it and only got 1 fragment - 27 in my ship and off to Palin I go!

Finally I have managed to get my invite to Palin, however I now realise that without having already travelled 5000LY from start his base remains hostile to me. I found the base by viewing another CMDR's landing video, but upon travelling there I was warned verbally lethal force would be used against me and the base was shown as both red and hostile on my HUD.

I am now travelling out the required 5000LY from start and will look for UA and fragments too, thanks to the top tips on this thread.

HIP 14479 found all the fragments I needed in 30 minutes of flying around.

Great info -Heading out there now.

I also heard if you ram them to death you will drop 3 "per kill"...

Update

Ramming produced 1-2 bits (aka 3-6 fragments)
Shooting with multi cannons, same result
Shooting with seekers yielded more 2 bits (3 x 2 bits, 1 x 1 bit)
total time about 1.5 hours, slow cruising between the planets.

Fly safe and seek the mysteries of the void- safely.

36 hours to see first Modular Terminal. It required me to be in a medium ship I was in my Annie with about 140T of cargo, could not swap ship.

Anecdotal information is anecdotal.
