Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

Yep, a very dark day shrouded in positive blah blah blah....

But think of all the other players you never see in open that you'll be able to instance with like before odyssey. It'll be worth it you'll see. Players everywhere and totally not all just playing in solo or in one of the 400 billion other systems you're not in.

You'll grow to accept the odyssey ui and such things. soon you wont even remember what about the horizons version was better because you'll be too busy trying to figure out what settings you need to run to keep your VR usable.

though, one really good positive from this is if it actually leads to less problematic updates and more of them (more updates ...not more problematic ones).

Update 12's improved performance, and the serious issues were fixed pretty quickly. Quite a good update in my opinion
For me, the serious issues persist. I haven't been able to get into the game since update 12 dropped. FD support have been unable to help too because the crash reporter no longer works. They've basically said, "wait for update 13 and those updates to follow for possible fixes".

I would bet that after the dust of 3.8/4.0/Odyssey settles, 3.8 will never get any more updates unless they are critical and more than likely it may be completely shelved at some point anyway...

That sounds horrible...I hope it gets fixed for you...

Very pleased that 3.8 Horizons will still be accessible alongside Horizons 4.0. I honestly didn't think this would be feasible, but more choice is always a good move!
Has it been confirmed elsewhere whether Horizons 4.0 will have crossplay with Odyssey 4.0?

my read of the OP and the linked post was that 3.8 wont even be a thing accessible to players. 4.0 horizons will exist and odyssey will remain a separate "optional" dlc.

if that's not the case, then what would this merging actually solve? they'll still need to maintain the separate server backends and still have the supposed narrative issues.

edit: "You will still be able to launch Elite in version 3.8 if you choose. This option is expected to come in the weeks following Update 13 with more details to be shared closer to the time"

I missed that line. So I dont see what the point of that is at all if this move to 4.0 for horizons is to reduce cost and streamline narrative implementation and all. You dont accomplish any of those goals by keeping 3.8 usable.

Here's the relevant part of the linked article, italics on the important bit.

To allow as many players as possible to experience the new narrative and gameplay elements, we intend to give all PC players access to version 4.0, at no additional cost, while keeping the upgrade to Odyssey optional. You will still be able to launch Elite in version 3.8 if you choose. This option is expected to come in the weeks following Update 13 with more details to be shared closer to the time.

The consoles are presumably at whatever is equal to 3.8 on those platforms until the end of time...so I'm projecting that to PC as well..

Hurrah - armband removed again.

FOR SALE
JOB LOT OF BLACK ARMBANDS
CONDITION AS NEW (APART FROM ONE - LIGHTLY TEAR STAINED)

I think you might need that armband again. One of the upgrades for Horizons players will be the Odyssey "planet rendering" on airless worlds. I've interpreted that as being the "realistic" landable planets as seen in Odyssey as opposed to the freaky surfaces of old.

Personally I want my wall-like cliffs again as seen in the Odyssey Alpha. Bring back my wall please. 🥺

Players will have the option to launch in 3.8 or 4.0, whichever they prefer.

As a hint, I'd like to have it the other way around: an option to only keep 4.0 + Odyssey on my PC and remove all other parts to free up space? :)
Had not been running Horizon since Odyssey had been released, most of the times it is running good enough (for me) on my i5 6500 / Radeon RX 5700 (without XT) also in 4k ...

Ah yes, but we've also been told we can hang on to the 3.8 client so I think the upgrade away from Horizons planets is still optional.

Well, there goes my ability to play the game, or to have actually interesting planets - now it's visibly repeatable landscapes and crap features... in addition to game performance loss so bad, I guess it will be a nice SLIDESHOW to load up now and then.

I don't need the game performance and UI downgrade to Odyssey's code base. I'd prefer to keep my fully working version of the game, kthx.

  1. Start up the launcher.
  2. Select the "Elite Dangerous: Horizons" game next to the Play button.
  3. Select "Options" on the top right of the launcher
  4. Select Uninstall game
Note that I haven't tried this myself, so make sure you have a backup of the game files, especially your configs and binds ;)

so long as they have "valid" customers on this 3.8 branch, they wont succeed in any of the goals they noted for why they wanted to bring 4.0 to horizons. Like none of them. Because they can't make the narrative only work for some players in different versions of the client.

The status quo we're in now remains exactly the same as after this change if 3.8 remains for players. The only upside i can see for this is that you can ease players in horizons into this new codebase and have time to make fixes there before making it mandatory since they may contain large amount of users who never tested in odyssey. But none of the benefits will be seen (for fdev) until everything is on 4.0. Unless they are really prepared to leave 3.8 players behind yet still let them login/purchase the game.

If players have the option to run 3.8 or 4.0 then FDev can quite reasonably make 'narrative content' 4.0-only. If you want the narrative, run 4.0.
