Update 13, Narrative and Access to 4.0

Is upgrading to 4.0 mandatory or can Horizons players stay with 3.8? Asking because the "updated graphics", especially the planetary rendering, is ugly.
"Moving forwards, all PC players will have access to content in the next narrative phase given they are using version 4.0, except in cases where on-foot gameplay (and by extension, Odyssey) is required. "

This implies that 4.0 will be optional. For me personally, the best of both worlds would be the option to launch either "Horizons Legacy" or "Odyssey Lite" from the game's launcher, giving me access to both and allowing me to chose based on what I want to do.

EDIT -

It's not an "upgrade" to 4.0 as such. Players will have the option to launch in 3.8 or 4.0, whichever they prefer.
Looks like that's what we're going to get! That works for me. I'm assuming Horizons 4.0 will perform similar to Odyssey, so it gives me a "try before you buy" option to test Odyssey performance before I buy it (potential performance issues being one of the main reasons I haven't bought it yet).

It's not an "upgrade" to 4.0 as such. Players will have the option to launch in 3.8 or 4.0, whichever they prefer. We'll make this clearer in the post.

4.0 is not required for Update 13 or to experience the conclusion to the Azimuth Saga. Interpretation 2 is more accurate.
Hurrah - armband removed again.

@Bruce G - is it right to assume that tenuous atmospheric planets WILL be in Horizons 4.0, but we just won't be able to land on them? In other words, will we see them from orbit just like they appear in Odyssey, or will they be the older textured-based planets we currently see?

So they'll be an option to launch:
  • In Odyssey
  • In Horizons 4.0
  • In Horizons 3.8
For at least a couple of months for Windows players?
I wonder what the point of having Horizons 4.0 in that list, since it's just Odyssey with some restrictions. It would make more sense to just have Odyssey OR Horizons 4.0 along with Horizons 3.8.

seeing a lot of "yay, update 13". if you actually read the news piece it says:

"This is expected to come in the weeks following Update 13". Will probably happen around the same time console migrations happen I recon?
Yeah I missed that on my first skim read. Reading more closely, I wonder if Horizons 4.0 will be an entirely optional and separate download rather than an update at all.

If it's free and can remain separate from Horizons Legacy, then I'll go ahead and download Odyssey Lite and give it a try. What could possibly go wrong?
