Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I keep seeing people concerned about decommissioning their fleet carriers 'Before' 6 days... But from what's been said so far, there is no reason to decommission before the split If you are active on 4.0.... You're saying 'again' so I'm guessing you already did the profile transfer / crossgrade. The issue with carriers is when the split happens, the people who decide to move forward with 4.0 will have to decide if they want to maintain the carrier in 2 different unconnected universes, or to decommission the old carrier so the upkeep doesn't bleed the cmdr dry. This is not a transfer issue like before. At the split I will decommission my old carrier to stop the upkeep and give my old cmdr the money in case I ever go back to 3.8.

Edit... you also said "I thought I was good. Turns out I wasn't. Now".... Are you saying that because you actually had a problem before today or because everyone keep saying not enough time to decommission carriers..... Only the people who haven't successfully done the profile transfer from 2 months ago should be concerned... Are you playing on 4.0 horizons or odyssey? if so you're good to go. You can do whatever with your old carrier whenever you decide to (after the split). People have been requesting that cmdrs move their old unused carriers to empty systems though to minimize clutter.

Personally i'll just continue in live and let the legacy account stagnate. The FC will sell itself eventually anyway.

Fleet carriers are NOT transferred in any way - FDev has specifically stated that decommissioning must happen PRIOR to the transfer.
This is true, so the best case scenario would be to ask if Frontier can accelerate that decommissioning process for those who haven't gotten around to it after two months, I don't know how hard that would be for them to change it, but at some level it is an arbitrary time frame set in software. However, I do wonder how many people who were actually going to take up the offer of the console account copy to PC have yet to still do it.

As someone who plays on XBOX and PS, I can give you some info in this regard.

On XBOX, it feels like the population is pretty low. When asked, players generally knew what was going on for the future of XBOX ED. The sense was that folks had either transferred or procrastinating til the last minute.

On PS, the population is pretty lively around the major gameplay hubs. I'm actually shocked at the number of new CMDR Sidewinders you see on PS (recent PS store sale). Most players do not know about transfers or what is going on with the future of the game.

The big difference between the two... XBOX ED has had occasional news blurbs about what is going on while PS ED has had zero communication in game regarding things. Anecdotal, but most of the console folks here that are communicating issues in these threads seem to be PS players.

Yes, you can make the Hitchhiker jokes about the planning office, but the XBOX players knew to grab a pint and their towel because they were given some info about the approaching vorgon fleet. In general, most PS players haven't even seen the vorgons moving into orbit yet because there has been zero communication to them in game. There is a minority of players that visit forums. And a smaller minority of those are console players. The game works for them, why should they head off to check out the forums for info unless prompted to do so? And it's not like there is a blurb about the incoming vorgon fleet at commonly used online ED tools like EDDB.

Lots of the current gnashing of teeth could have been headed off with a simple banner on the start screen for console versions to visit the forums for important information. The evil answer is FDev wanted to keep some money trickling in from unsuspecting console users. The more realistic answer is they never had an exit strategy or communication plan, so it's just put the clothes pin on the nose and try to make it through to the other side. The unfortunate reality is that in five years, everyone will talk about the quaint days of when ED had console versions and wonder where some folks got those odd azure ship paints.
I'm not sure Elite: Dangerous will exist in 5 years, not in active development. Mac, VR, console: healthy games that are doing well and have a future don't continuously remove themselves from multiple platforms. The logic of cutting those things to try and let one aspect of the struggling game survive (Windows PC flatscreen E:D) is sound, whatever troubles they have should hypothetically not be as bad with a lower workload. But I've never seen any strategy like this pulled off successfully in gaming, ever. And while they're struggling to make it work, they're generating a ton of negative consumer sentiment, which tends not to go away as fast as so many negative stories in a row can build it up. Plus, it erodes consumer trust: VR users saw Mac get cut off and thought that wouldn't happen to them, it's mostly Apple's fault (sidebar: true) and VR didn't have something like Metal causing issues. Then when VR users got cut off, console users saw it and thought it couldn't happen to them because FDev had promised a console Odyssey release, and anyone concerned that FDev may be on their way to killing off console users was derided as doomsaying, "can I have your stuff", etc. When FDev killed off console, PC users insisted it's not a pattern and it won't happen to them. The rest of the story hasn't been told yet.

I thought about doing the same since it has a few years worth of payments on it.... Maybe park it out in the black near a visitor spot where not many carriers are so people can at least refuel, repair, rearm with 0% tariff..... But then what if Fdev really screws up Odyssey, I personally don't really care for the current first person shooter they seem to be focused on (I'm a VR player), or even killing thargoids, I used to feed them meta alloys and watch them scan stuff... It would really be nice to be able to come back to a billionaire cmdr if I don't like the new direction. or if the game becomes totally un playable in VR.

Storage wise, same as Odyssey
Perf wise, same as Odyssey, though you could get away with weaker hardware because you won't be doing any demanding on-foot stuff (aka ground CZs or playing around in settlements)
so Horizons users are forced to used scuffed UI, worse performance, and bloatware if we want our action still be relevant?
what a horrible decision from fdev. i have zero interest to waste 50GB of storage for something i dont care and cant even use.

I'll not bother speculating on "what if FD screws up". Its happened often enough, but somehow things usually muddle through.

I'm not going to maintain 2 accounts, i barely have enough time for one at the moment.

Roll the dice, see what happens.

If FD do somehow blow it, well, shame, but there are plenty of other games out there. I'm eyeing Crusader Kings 3 at the moment, can't believe i've overlooked it for so long.

Sounds like this will create an opportunity to reshape the Legacy galaxy, with most players beeing busy in Live version.

A Communist? Anarchist? Imperial? What Legacy Galaxy will look like in the future?
Who will become the leading Major power?
Extend your Player faction beyond the limits!

Very exciting update.
Doubt much will change, the majority of Players changing to the Live version. Those who can't or won't will be stuck in the Past, essentially living off borrowed time. And nobody is going to keep both sides BGS and Powerplay running, only Live is what matters in the end.

Interesting you mention Powerplay. Will be interesting to see what happens with that on legacy. Will the powers just collapse?

That’s some Frontier and you know it. Just dropping console bgs off so multi platform communities are screwed into working two side of their space. You cannot do this. I don’t care if it somehow makes it easier for you or if you think this is just gonna be ok but you already cut content from console players and now you are cutting them out of the main servers. Please fdev. Don’t do this.
It's futile to appeal for Mercy when the Executioner grabs his Axe firmly in both hands, getting ready for the final swing. You can only hope for a clean cut at this point, to get it over swiftly.

Bring back one single galaxy: EDO/EDH together and get rid of legacy lol.
Well, my worst nightmare has come true. EDH 3.8 was cut off from the world, but the bugs in 4.0 were not fixed, which actually made this game unattractive to me. It's time to say goodbye after a short (1.5 year) adventure. I will test it once after update in live version, but if any technical troubles appears I definitely quit play it. One straw too more for camel back. Sorry commanders o7.

Is it even possible for you to be an adult and have an adult conversation?

I'm not asking for, nor getting anything for "free". I paid for Elite Dangerous. Full price. I paid for the Horizons expansion. Full price. That is not "free".

I said absolutely nowhere that I want them to continue to "run an entire universe" for me for "free". In September they said we could transfer our console accounts "indefinitely" and when that came to an end the would provide "enough time" for us to get everything transferred. 6 days is not ample warning. You can't even decommission a carrier in that time if you started the exact second they made the announcement.

That's it. That's all.

Maybe try to stop being childish "sheessh - eyeroll" and understand that when a company makes assurances and then immediately goes back on those assurances, that is an issue. And a valid one.
I don't know. When surrounded by childish tantrums, it brings out the inner child in me.

You may not have asked for it, but they are actually giving you something, but you don't want that because you want what? Something else?

What are you getting:

1. A continued game server for your existing investment. You paid for that. You get to keep that. Carry on playing that CMDR. No one promised you more than that and you are getting it.

2. The Console Transfer Process that's been up and running since just after U13. A "FREE" upgrade to Horizons 4.0 and a separate account AND you get to keep what you are playing now - that bit that you paid for. That's not going away. Oh, you want to swap now, but you knew Update 14 was going to be big - we've known the stargoids have been coming. We've known that new content was only available in 4.0. But you are complaining they gave you no notice???? Sheesh with extra cheese on top.

You snoozed. You lost. You're grumpy about it, fine I get it. But no one owes you anything.

4.0 is coming with extra bugs.

Bye!

Don't forget the obligatory rage quit post and remember that Bottom Hat will be looking for your stuffs.

I hear ya man. Hello btws. It’s just all crap. Fdev continues to alienate every part of the community in some way just so they can do what they want. This is taken down to such a basic mechanic of the game that has been shared since the very beginning and not even that is left. I really hope whatever they have planned is so worth it to burn so many in the community with such a base gameplay concept because if this is all for another failed plan I really don’t know what to say. I suppose, at this point, how much surprise would there be. Only to succeed in dividing more of us in every way possible.

Even if it doesn't concern me as a PC player I'm baffled about this short term announcement

The introduction of Legacy Mode is going to affect what data can be copied. For this reason, the process will be temporarily suspended with the release of Update 14. To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to use the process, it will be reintroduced in Q1 next year.

The version of the process that we reintroduce will not be as comprehensive as before and will only copy the most essential profile data related to player progression. For this reason, we strongly encourage anyone considering copying their profile to do so before Update 14.

I mean, really ? You tell all console players that they furthermore can't transfer their full account to PC about ONE week before the "old" service is shut down ??

Nice... really... not !

Greetings Commanders,

We have an important announcement to share with regards to future game modes as of Update 14 which is due 29 November! Read all about it on our website and let us know what you think in the comments below:

I absolutely approve of hard decisions finally being made in order to focus development on one version of the game and resources are not scattered anymore.
I also get some of the outrage, but to be entirely fair, everyone keeps what they paid for plus all the entirely free updates up to now in Horizon 3.8. Keeping this version as an option is already more than most other devs would have done, to be honest. Most would rather lose all those players (who would complain for a while and then shut up) rather than keep them (for that will generate people interested in the game who still have their reasons to complain about this split) for better outrage-management. :D
I, who is personally not affected by the split, like a lot that we can instance again with any 4.0 (sorry, "live") player, owning Odyssey or not.

Not sure what you mean. Do you mean you want both to be tied together so not separate or that players have to make a choice regarding which profile they keep?
I mean making 2 servers where only BGS is separated is not the same as making completely separated servers. 2nd is much easier. 1st maybe impossible yet. And I don't want to play 2nd version where I should decide what CMDR to keep/play.

I am not too worried on the whole - the game has evolved over the many years it has been running. New hardware needed is expected - same as any other game or game franchise however, the Frontier API and things that rely on it...
Inara, EDSM, etc. Will there be a separate API for each version AT LAUNCH so that we are not losing data?
