Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

@Bruce G its wonderful that FD is keeping 3.8 alive, and it’s understandable why narrative content isn’t going to be migrated over, an acceptable comprise; but can it be confirmed if FD is going to update the 3.8 codex text, so that this is identifiable for new players who do opt for 3.8 over 4.0, as some of that text is linked to narrative content?

Not thousands of hours of content though. The thousands of hours are artificially inflated with repetitive grind.
If you want to see grind you will see it everywhere.

I had slighty more than 100h in NMS, and to be fair I don't see more content. Just "gather 18419 carbon to have 18419 carbon, instead 1". So repetitive grind for grind. In elite my grind at least had purpose, so I can explore in one of 20 different ships :)

I don’t just meant the fact that you need to collect things to build/upgrade. Yes that’s present in pretty much all games with a character progression model. ED does that with very poor and boring, game designs and mechanics and in many cases even encouraging meta gaming mechanics like relogging to reset the instance simply because that is the best option of you value your time as a player.

Here are some example:

Supercruise Travel - yes I know this has been done to death but as somebody said it’s just sitting there staring at nothing, with very little gameplay happening. Things could have been done to make it more interesting such as having a map overlay of the system showing you gravity wells where you cal plot an optimal course. Using said path would allow for much faster supercruise speeds than now. Interesting things can happen on these known paths like increased pirate activity or other hazards.

Collecting things in space. We have slow, boring limpets. Other games would have implemented a faster mechanic like a tractor beam to quickly gather things in an area. It’s not like it makes things more challenging with limpets or manually gathering since once the battle is over and there’s mats everywhere there are no additional risks, no more ships jump in if you wait longer, why not just have an option to grab everything and carry on?

Trading power play commodities - I just can’t believe this mechanic. Why not just allow me to fill my hold and paying however much it costs in one go? Why must I have to buy 10-25 at a time? It still costs the same to fill my hold! One of the actual rewards for a higher power play rank means it takes you less mouse clicks to fill your hold. Who designs that? That’s just purposely adding in meaningless grind for no reason other than having grind. Players should not be punished with additional mouse clicks for having a lower rank. It’s ridiculous.

Howdy fellow DangerHeads,
So, after a week from Elite; and a bit more time for the Update 14 mess to be de-bugged; I take a look at the launcher and see that I need to Install Horizons 4.0 .
Legacy is playable! (but not live; so no actions here will affect 4.0 or Odyssey Powerplay, BGS, etc.. )

I can probably play H4.0, with a i7-4810MQ CPU and (2) GTX 870M GPU's with 4MB each; but I have only 89 GB of free space on my 500GB SSD.
( I know; but I'm a Museum-of-Tech retired Elektrical Injunear with a running MS Win XP machine and "legacy" games that still work! heheheh!)

I do not plan on buying Odyssey to play on this machine; maybe a new one, but 3.8 plays well at 40-80 fps as-is.
FYI- I have 9,860 Hours logged into ED- see attached.
Yep; it is keybinding madness kinda game!
I can imagine the additional grind and bindings for ED "space legs".
I've been here before; for many 1st person shooter Ubisoft games..BTW, without the mind-bending key and joystick binds.

I also plan on backing up all game files before ANY installs!
Meanwhile:
I wait , then I log-on to Legacy Horizons after U 14 to find that my Fleet Carrier has fallen into Debt; 7 Million Space Smackers owed!
I drop 250 Million Cr into the fleet carrier reserves to avoid "de-commissioning" of the Carrier in a Tick or so..in Legacy, that is.

My questions are for the Elite Players here are:

1) What am I going to be downloading to Install and run H 4.0 (live) 40-50 GB?
2) Is the payment of debt in Legacy 3.8 going to clear the Fleet Carrier debt in H 4.0?
3) Is H4.0, much less Odyssey, worth the hassle and effort?

Answers, comments appreciated!
or sympathetic cuss-words?

Oh-Seven 'Manders!

Delta-Oscar-Charlie- over and maybe out..

Lost in a Frontier "3.8 parallel universe" with no friends..after years of making 'em!

  1. Around 50GB, correct.
  2. No, everything is separate.
  3. Yes if you want any new content and meaningful updates.

So this update has renewed my interest in the game after several years of hiatus. I am an Xbox player and with console migration being postponed until Q1 2023, to say I'm disappointed I can't rejoin and play on my existing profile is an understatement.

With an update that is touching on long-awaited narrative topics and content, wouldn't it have been wise to anticipate a need for the migration service from Update 14? Having to wait 2-4 months and potentially miss out on the real-time discoveries of update 14 is a huge letdown.

Last week I was able to log in to Live on one PC and Legacy on another with the intention of making simultaneous carrier jumps. Now I find that I can be logged into only one of these games at a time using the same account credentials. Has some FDEV policy changed?

Nope i believe that was always the case if you read the notes

and yet, last week, I was logged in to both games simultaneously on different machines. It was definitely the case, as you say, BEFORE update 14, but given they are two completely different games I'm not sure why what I want to do is not possible or allowed
.

Ok, you killed it Frontier.
I get 4 fps on my odl machine. Will play the legacy version for racing purposes, or to kill time, but this is simply the end of the game for me.
If anyone is interested I therefore have a pair of Thrustmaster 16000M joysticks for sale.
