Update 14 and Beyond: Live and Legacy Modes

I've not seen a single ganker in 3.8 in months, and I've spent lots of time in Jameson and Deciat looking for them, LOL. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I assumed they all moved to 4.0

ps - my block list has been empty for awhile now.
It's been a while since I tried. Been going into solo ever since that one time.

So, have I got this right?
Any progress made by players in 3.8, after U14 splits the game in two, won't transfer over to 4.0 when they are able to upgrade to a meatier PC.
That's the thing, we don't actually know how the future transfers will work and this coupled with the 6 days notice after originally saying they'd give plenty of notice really hasn't done them any favours. If we knew how this was going to work in future, maybe this would temper some reactions instead of just saying the transfer will be less somehow.

Personally I think this all has been a reactive rather than proactive decision:

"Well we have to put out the update but the QA guys have just said it completely breaks on 3.8 and we don't have time to fix it. Wait, let's just retire 3.8 as a live version."

Correct! 3.8 and 4.0 will be separate accounts that start diverging the moment you start playing.

Edit: Presuming you talk about PC only..

No, they're planning on reinstituting a transfer process in a couple of months. The difference is that if you transfer now, more of your data will be transferred to the new 4.0 account. If you transfer later, who knows what will go? It could go back to the previous version of only your credits being transferred and you start everything else from scratch.

I'm wondering why PC Cmdrs always be that hateful against Console Cmdrs. It should be vice versa. We didn't stall "your" Odyssey release, you did steal ours! Keep in mind that PC version of odyssey got released first, while console version was only promised. The PC version was that crappy that - according to Bradens statement - it needed so much time and ressources to fix, so that fdev "needed" to cut console support to move on forward on their timetable. You'd got what was promised, we didn't!

It was also never said that consoles were unable to run codebase 4.0 due to hardware limitations. Apart from the fact that console versions are basically easier to maintain (just compare the limited number of base hardware versons of PS4 and XBox with the number of possible Hardware / Software / Driver Combinations on the PC side), it was a pure political decision to cut of console development. I hope this pays back for frontier one day.

Console players already feel cheated by frontier. Most of who I know boycott ED, and I can understand them.
But apart from that, console players are not second class commanders, we used to play the same game with the same community, just on another rig.
Man ... For somebody that just joined the forum yesterday, you sure know a lot about what's happened on the forums.

@Bruce G And I will ask a different question. Since it is pointless for me to play in two worlds instead of one at the same time, I might no longer need Legacy and I might not even want it on my HDD. Will there be any option to simply uninstall the legacy game files to free up disk space?

Yes. Live and Legacy will be two completely separate installs. This is mentioned in the post.

Sorry to ask a question that's probably been asnwered already elsewhere but this the first time in months I've visited the forums in months and am just trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

I get that my console account will be stuck in Legacy / 3.8 - that sucks but wasn't completely unexpected. At least the server instances are staying on. (Also, I've seen a few "low traffic will give Frontier the excuse to turn off the Legacy servers - that's not strictly speaking true. Kinda the whole point of AWS is that you can scale your instances up and down, both in terms of numbers and capacity, to precisely serve your traffic needs. If traffic dwindled then Frontier can scale down 3.8 servers and save money accordingly).

What happens with my PC account though? I have it on the Epic Games launcher. Still on Horizons, I'm not convinced my PC can cope with Odyssey and I'm not particularly bothered about the on foot stuff. Do I get an upgrade to 4.0 to stay in the Live galaxy? Does that come as an auto update with Epic Games? Do I then have the option to launch either the Live or Legacy versions when I start the game?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify.

You should already have the option to run H4 on the launcher (although it will mean a download of V4.0 code before you can play) so you should be fine.

It may be worth checking and downloading H4 in order to see how your PC handles the Odyssey code (H4 is EDO minus feet and tenuous Atmo landings) and if it is fine it'll give you an idea how EDO might run on it, should you wish to try it in the future.

Ah, OK, cool. I'll have a look. Haven't fired up Elite in a while on either PC or PS4 due to the whole console developments robbing me of motivation... Came back today to hear it's even worse!!

Good shout about the performance of version 4.0. I mean if I can pick up Odyssey cheap I might give it a go sometime.

Impressive that this announcement made the share price drop before it was even, well, announced.

indeed stock has risen 19 Points today again some overall favourable market conditions all be it with volatility. Oh Btw was merely commenting as a Fin Tech trader with the stock being still set to buy with the further push for more cost take outs in response. However we do await a comment and explanation from the Frontiers commander and chief as to why 7 % has been wiped out .

Though I bow to your superior knowledge of trading.

I would expect an announcement of EoL date for legacy especially as revenue continually declines and thus making it no longer viable.

When I'm at work, I open the Twitch stream on my phone's Twitch app, set to audio-only, and reduce audio level. Getting Twitch Drops is easy peasy (y)
So that makes it even worse, if they are announcing in advance, and Not putting anything on the Twitch Schedule, And there is no mention on their Twitch 'About' page of where to find their schedule on other sources.

Welp, Mats are almost at max, 4 solid days of Rank/Cash grind for me, Get that Legacy account as high up as possible so I can use it when I'm out in the black and fancy dropping back to the Black for some Pew Pew
