Update 15, the Upcoming Feature Rework and More

they looked at what to rework and have come to the conclusion that all major features are so janky that they need a major rework, therefore they can't decide what to start with. and i don't blame them. that's true for software development in general, but especially so for elite, which has like a decade of development entopy in its codebase.
...and let's not forget about the EDO/EDH divide: it is just UNACCEPTABLE that we're still having 2 "live game" versions which are not able to share instancing.

Caps, bold and underlines will not in any way alter the PEGI age mismatch and thus the lack of instancing.

( ... insert Simpsons gif of old codger ranting at the clouds ... )

Since the Horizons owners (low PEGI) are not going to be able to disembark there's no problem for every actitivy that happens into space.

They've to introduce an-instance breaking feature in case EDH owner decides to visit a planetary EDO settlement.

Crime and punishment needs a better way to deal with player killers
That was the reason it already got a top-to-toe makeover years back (with Notoriety, Interstellar Factor shadow contacts etc added) leading to the bizarre mess we have today. Are you saying they failed in their aim to deter player killers?

Nope, the actual mechanics that we were play testing to see if they worked were pulled from the final release last time they did crime and punishment.

And this was at lest five years ago now.
And this is the second, more problematic issue: timely fixes. A lot of design flaws and issues needed to be dealt with at the time and were left, and with each passing year became more of an entrenched problem compounded by new features.

Whats annoying is a lot of things were fine as they were and were made worse. The classic (engineering) is one such example where the unique modules pre engineers pretty much did what was needed (small, specific boosts and tradeoffs) rather than the heavily grindy, centralised feature we have today.

Powerplay is another: if FD had doubled down on fixing it like they have with EDO, it would not be the clusterfudge it is now to fix.

It’s always seems to be that way. For some of these older features they got 95% of the way there but they either ran out of time or (in the case of Powerplay) players who don’t play that particular mode, put their oar in.

For multi-crew it was the Gunnar Role, for Powerplay, it was implementing Sandro’s last load of changes. CQC needed a better match maker and the C&P needed to punish griefers. In all cases, they almost got there. That has always been one of the points of frustration with Elite.

Now roll forward to the thargoid war, that has been excellently executed. They still need to make stopping the Orthrus the best way to stop an alert system and I still feel the glances need dialling back a little, but it is vast improvement of the updates of old.

Indeed, the Horizons users are not able to disembark, but the Odyssey users are able to disembark and the Horizons users are able to run them over in their SRVs or in their Ships. (Which would be a blatant breach of PEGI rating - which is law enforced in UK)

It's also the reason that while you can visit EDO settlements in Horizons (on non-atmo planets), you'll find out they're empty - no NPCs there, so you cant kill "human" like figures

...and let's not forget about the EDO/EDH divide: it is just UNACCEPTABLE that we're still having 2 "live game" versions which are not able to share instancing.
And yet many of us are accepting it just fine.

There are many annoying, clunky things wrong with this game. But if I had to make a list of my gripes, I don't think I'd even have thought of that one. I guess it's because I don't focus on exploding other people. :)

Too right mate lets scrap EDH and move on with Oddy .................... ill get me coat.

PEGI can always change the rating, as it did for Roblox in 2022 tho... in this case 7 to 16 could be a big jump, but let's be honest about PEGI (= Fortnite is 12 btw).

Well, quite a number of console players did move to PC with the EDH free copy, but didn't buy Odyssey as 99% have the console game pass and don't buy other games (which makes sense) so they're "stuck" there...

I know, that "gankers everywhere" schizo mode is strong in some minds, but personally I don't like this split because I have some friends with ody, and without ody. Instancing toghether at least in space could fix a lot of issues, starting at constant switching modes, ending at this all poor people which need help in paritcular activities (at this point mainly hydras in AX CZs), byt they cannot receive it, because one side cannot switch version, meanwhile another side is to stubborn to switch to version, which is owned by 100% of PC players.

Well PEGI folks arnt exactly on the ball with enforcing stuff, i think Roblox holds the record for the most infringements and yet its still running. 🤷‍♂️

The thargoid war is literally full of bugs, and I don't mean the ammonia-based ones.

  • Thargoid hearts no longer glow correctly when exerted
  • At AX CZs around large stations (e.g. coriolis) interceptors will match the station's rotation when somebody docks inside, making them zoom around at impossible speeds.
  • CZ progress randomly completes (awarding the bonus payout) and restarts during hydra fights
  • interceptor AI stops working and they become motionless when they reach ~50km from the CZ
  • invasion systems randomly fail to offer any passenger evac / supply missions
  • recaptured control systems don't have their AX CZs removed. If they transition back to alert state the CZs around stations reactivate, but the station will repeatedly fine you for violating their no-fire zone.

These are just a few of the issues, some of which have been ignored since the beginning of last December.

If this were true then it would mean they never had a specific rework in mind in the first place, and therefore haven't been, uh, re-working on it at all up to this point. Which to me would seem to imply that whatever rework they rework on, they won't be doing that much work on it and it might not be major. Which I hope isn't true but I can't argue with your logic here.
