Update 18 | Update Notes

A 'new AA engine' was mentioned a couple of years ago, if my memory serves, then nothing more was ever said about it.
I have to admit being so used to the jaggies nowadays that I no longer take any notice... Or maybe old age is being kind to me after all?
I never play on a flat screen, I only do VR; but when I see cockpit footage of other players I don't mind the jaggies as much, even on my 65" in the living room. But in VR I can't get used to it. Especially in my peripheral vision, the shimmering is very annoying. I find it so much worse in VR. It's one of the very few things of Elite VR that drives me nuts.

The last I read was from when the Issue Tracker entry was removed and a "patch note" entry made saying they had tried but couldn't/wouldn't do anything else in regards to fixing the AA.

I seem to remember Frontier saying that there's nothing more they can do about antialiasing in general, and that we ought to submit bug reports for specific occurrences.

ok thanks for your work(y) However, as an Elite player since the Amiga era, I would advise you NOT TO TALK about the bug fix of the advertising holograms: with all the bugs and improvements that need to be made, it is quite ironic, if not offensive.

I do get it. As I said in my Top Shift Review of 2023 (and Part 2), if you weren't into the thargoid war, that there was no new mechanics added to the game. If the war didn't appeal to you, then apart from bug fixes, the game has been largely static since Update 13 (think that was walking around fleet carriers). That's frustrating because, yes I would have liked a little bit of love sent to other parts of the game, like exploration or Crime and Punishment.

On the other hand, the Thargoid war has been a huge amount of content and, apart for the Glaive and the problems with stopping the Orthus, I've found it quite enjoyable. Its just became a shame that there was a lot of people who just said 'Thargoids again, I'm Out', without even trying the content.

Which means they would need to upgrade the game engine from the current version to the one used in JWE2 (which does allow DLAA).

However, given the vastly different scope between the games (even tho they may be using variations of the Cobra Engine) - it may be an impossible task (maybe not necessarily from a tech perspective but from cost/revenue perspective)

But, but, but "are we there yet?"

On a more serious note, is the 30GB client download available yet, or it it normally after the servers come back online?

If it's available, what the version string (I use GFN so have no control over the download)

turn left at mars. follow route to raxxla and go for another 5000 lys til you meet the thargoid mission controller.and then collected all the materials ask for
on the 5 page cmd module listed under future release notes.

I do both, depending on my mood... But I see your point also.
<OT>Honestly, I couldn't play flat if I wanted to; the way I have set things up I'm fully commited to VR. My VR chair with my VKB sticks mounted to its armrests is standing in the middle of my computer room where the headset wire comes down from the ceiling; it's also where my standup VR spot is (I move the chair for that). My desk is fairly far from that, and I couldn't touch the sticks if I wanted to, and I cannot fly with M&K. Also, the few times I tried to fly on flat by dragging my VR chair in front of my desk I couldn't thread through the mail slot with a cobra.

I'm completely helpless in 2D.</OT>

This game isn't FOSS. Indeed, it's decidedly unfree closed-source software. It's also been quite a while since the last public beta.
True. But my point was that end users reporting bugs is a normal thing in software world; FOSS is simply the largest and most visible part of users reporting bugs (Github). It's also a thing with hardware world, especially with niche professional equipment, but also with smaller niche computer hardware—eg VKB is very responsive to user feedback and quick to fix hardware problems with updated designs, and also releasing "patches" for free for affected users since their stuffz is designed for repairability.
