Update 5 Performance Thread

I posted this in another thread, but I'll re-post it here:

I'll chime in here with my experience as well. My gaming laptop specs:

MSI GT75 Titan 8SF:
  • Intel i7-8750H @ 2.20 GHz
  • NVIDIA RTX 2070
  • 32 GB DDR4 RAM
  • Game installed on a RAID-0'd pair of M.2 NVMe's, same as the operating system
---

Couple of settlements:

Laister's Workshop, Kuma - Medium Industrial Settlement with 1 PWR, 1 CMD, 1 IND and 1 HAB buildings
  • ~35 FPS with the power off, fires and 11 scavengers present, with heavy stuttering only while moving around the settlement
  • Improved to 45-60 FPS once all scavengers were eliminated
  • ~40-50 FPS with the power turned on
Yarovy's Obligation, Kuma - Small Military Settlement with 1 PWR, 1 CMD, 1 STD and 1 HAB buildings
  • ~35 FPS upon landing, settled at ~50 FPS with 8 scavengers and fire present
  • Improved to 60-70 FPS with scavengers eliminated and power on
Mckenzie Dredging Installation, Kuma - Medium Mining Settlement with 1 PWR, 1 CMD-HAB hybrid, 1 EXT and 1 STD buildings
  • ~30-35 FPS with 8 scavengers and fire present, heavy stuttering while moving about the settlement
  • Improved to 40-50 FPS with scavengers eliminated and power on
---

And Graphics:
  • 1080p
  • Shadows on Medium
  • Anti-Aliasing set to SMAA
  • Supersampling set to 1x
  • Texture Filter Quality set to Trilinear
  • AMD FidelityFX CAS On
  • Everything else on High

I'll post more FPS numbers from different settlements as I encounter them.

Intel i9 10900K 3.7Ghz CPU
32GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM
RTX 2060 6GB GPU
In-game Graphic Settings = Ultra
Frame rates = 50-60 in stations

I have not as of this time noticed any deterioration of performance since the new update.

My PC is rather old, from 2015, although above the minimum requirements for EDO.

Graphics performance with Update 5 is far worse than with Update 4, esp. in settlement buildings.

Specs:

Intel Core i7-5820K, @6x 4.20GHz 15MB L3-Cache
16GB Crucial DDR4-2133
GeForce GTX 980, 4GB PCIe OC
256GB Samsung SSD 850 Pro, SATA 6Gb/s

I think some occlusion culling isn't working after update 5 at some places. You can check at ARAI'S MINE on IAH BULU, one of the best places to farm in Odyssey, it's a big extraction settlement, go there and just wander around, inside buildings eventually the frame drop will happen(while inside building try to look to the drills direction).

Just wanted to link this thread here which I only just spotted.

Contains some shader tweaks (e.g. turning off glass) which allegedly give significant performance boosts.
n.b. we obviously should definitely NOT have to do this kind of thing to get acceptable frame rates but if people are desperate while they wait for Frontier to fix things then I guess all suggestions are welcome?

Yes, I noticed this whilst shinning across a roof towards the corner of a building. Terrible stuttering until I return the way I came - which is also punctuated with a massive and I mean massive fps drop. Come out the other side of this "timewarp" and it's back to normal 45-60 again.

i got excited then, then i realised the performance boost isn't FSR.... its the old AMD feature.
come on fDEV get FSR inhere or DLSS.... even both

if you don't change the scaling mid game
after changing any graph setting must complete restart game. Any change will cut fps a little, u can see it on low cards like 1030 or 1050. On big cards it looks like "error" but still there.
Also using F10 to take screenshots drops FPS. It is enough about 11 presses to drop from 90 fps to single digit fps :D

That's why people see no difference lowering settings :D - to see any difference you must apply settings AND close the game. Next launch you will see.

Mmm... yes. I can see why its so demanding on Ultra settings

Here's the odd thing, my aformentioned Trigger's Broom of a PC has some really ancient components (the motherboard is an ABit IP35 Pro XE with an Intel Q6600 CPU and 8Gb RAM... from 2008. Yep you read that right) and yet I seem to be getting equal or better performance than some people here with modern high end systems. I don't have everything on Ultra and turned the shadow, ambient occlusion and material quality settings down to medium. RAM and CPU are not maxing out either. Gfx card is rather newer Nvidia GTX 1060 which is a couple of years old and was mid-range at the time.

This doesn't make sense! If the issues were purely about sheer processing power I should be playing a slideshow. As it is: yes there are issues and performance dips, but it's mostly okay now except on concourses.

I’m also experience worse performance spikes (dips?) even in areas where it was a solid 60. By example: grand larceny mission to get a thing from a container. (The one with 3x shipping containers in a triangle) U4 I’d have constant 60fps. U5 has 60 FPS during glide & then tanks down in the teens when you get close to the assets. It recovers so you land. Disembark & frame rate tanks again Down from 60 to 15. Leave it long enough looking in any direction & it recovers. If goons show up frame rate goes down again for 5 or so seconds & recovers.
it’s almost like something is trying to load & after a while it gives up & framerate recovers. At one point it CTD after I collected the item. On getting back into the game the assets have despawned & game is a smooth 60fps again. Something is not right, these scenarios ran better in alpha!
Ill post some vids to YouTube at some point…
Ok so here are the vids I promised.

First one is the approach to the POI:
Source: https://youtu.be/3HiAT7zosUY

Timestamps:
0:00 super cruise (60fps)
0:15 start of glide (51 - 60fps)
0:45 end of glide (55 - 60FPS)
1:13 near to location (FPS starts to drop)
1:19 Landing gear (fps fluctuates)
1:43 disembark (as low as 10 fps)
2:03 super choppy. (low teens to 20's)
2:37 Butter smooth!!? (60fps)

Leaving the POI: (from smooth 60 to Crash to desktop)
Source: https://youtu.be/ta_di8-qqDU

0:00 nice and smooth 60fps
0:12 invisible rock?
0:20 board ship (frame rate drops to mid teens during load)
0:30 take off Frame rate is half ~ 30fps
0:34 - 0:50 noticable spikes between 40 and 50
0:50 frame rate stabilises
1:00 noticable spikes between 23fps and 50fps
1:44 Crash to desktop (pixelated on purpose)

Third: following the CTD, the assets have de-spawned and everything is back to smooth 60 FPS

Something is not right!...

My specs aren't great, but I don't think my expectations of 1080/60 are too high either. This rig manages that in most other titles, including horizons...

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Current resolution: 1920 x 1080, 60Hz
Operating system: Win 10

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X
Memory: 16 GB RAM
Current resolution: 2560 x 1440
Operating system: Win 10
Everything set to Ultra

A big drop in settlements but overall very happy

Wait.. did a 3080 drop below 60 on 1440p? Wow.. just.. wow.
Yes, unfortunately - bar was crowded and had NPCs moving around and chatting did get this one looking out the window, Have found that in the space stations I average 70 - 100 but the bar drops quite a bit.

It got much worse for me, before update 5 performances was always fine. Not great, but playable. Now its all over the place and I can't make sense of it - Going to a crash site to pick up an item and the framerate is completley gone, single digit fps sliedshow. I go to a conflict Zones with all the fighting going on and the fps are fine.

I don't know whats going on there but its weird.

A specific settlement I've been visiting for Opinion Polls gets worse performance the longer I'm there, until my framerate is literally 1. Never seen anything like it until this patch.

Holy hell. 74 degrees Celsius. Is 100% GPU utilization normal for gaming? This is the first game I've had to do all this testing to have an enjoyable experience so now I don't know if I'm just being picky. I have a 1080 but a 3080 maxing out? Jeez.

DLSS would require DX12 and ED is built on DX11. You're right, it's high time things were upgraded. DLSS would be a brilliant solution to poor performance!
