Update 5 Performance Thread

AMD Ryzen 7 37000x
Nvidia 3060 RTX 12g
32g Ram
Win 10
The game is running from an M.2 drive
at 1080 60hz

And I was running at constant <30 fps and sometimes as low as 4fps at a planetary settlement.
This was after Update 5
I was running everything on Ultra which may have been a bit ambitious ?
lowering the settings a bit was better, though I still had large fps drops at settlements especially when AI are involved. An example would be 40-50fps at settlement but with drops to <25 fps when AIs involved.

I haven't really seen any improvement in update 5 where performance is concerned.

Now i'm experiencing very bad stuttering on some occasions(on settlements), this is really hurting playability and i didn't have this issue before today patch
Yeah, once I started going to settlements, I started seeing this. 1 step forward 2 steps back... Never happened before this update.

Ditto for me. Before update 5 dropped settlements were smooth for me, maybe not >60fps, but still smooth and perfectly playable (except when a CZ).

post update 5, the first settlement i went to felt great. Just luck it seems, because others since have terrible stutter now. Spikes <15 fps often. Gaaaaah. Particularly at extraction sites near the drills.

i9 10850K
RTX 3070 (previously 1660Ti)
32 Gb RAM
SSD

Settings at 1440p High.

Update 5 is incredibly choppy in terms of performance. Sub-50 on the title screen! Lots of stuttering in both space and on-foot. Even when I do reach 60 Hz it's not a smooth or pleasant experience.

The lighting tweaks and the Fidelity CAS stuff looks awful. Shadows look very weird. Ship interiors are wildly overlit whilst stars still flicker dimly in space. Station interiors are garish candelabra. All of the missing or broken visual effects from alpha are still missing or broken. Terrain pop-in / LOD also seems to be very prominent in this release. Aggressive culling (as with the previous updates) results in parts of concourses, stations and outposts literally disappearing before your eyes - depending on where you happen to be looking or positioned. On foot combat zones still drop well below 30 Hz.

I've built a new PC between the alpha and now - and the only difference between the i9-10850K/RTX 3070 and my old i5-2500K/1660Ti builds are that I can now run the game with the same visual issues and horrible performance at 1440p instead of 1080p.

So I set the game resolution to 1280x1024 and it's comepletely smooth. I should NOT have to do this in 2021...

I just started the game in the beginning of June and it was perfect. Updates 4 and 5 added nothing but problems (for me)...

I have the feeling that the performance problem is not hardware related, but rather Network related!
Even an un-optimized game should run at least at 60 FPS with some monster rigs I've seen here, it doesn't make any sense.

When I run in the hangar, I have stable 60 FPS all the way up to the elevator. The moment the elevator opens to the concourse I drop to 40/50 FPS.

The same thing happens when I deploy SRV in settlements, or disembark. Up to that moment the FPS remains relatively stable at 50/40, then drops to 30/40.
The drop happens every time there is an instance load.

I might be completely off, but I think it is worth checking out.

That may also explain why FD streams have such high FPS even in settlements. And I could bet that their rigs are not as powerful as some describe here.

AS long as I face the elevators, my fps stays at a stable 60 fps up to the stairs.

Then I look up, and it drops to ~50

At the window, I keep good performance, with reflections and all.

I maintain that performance when looking at the bar.

MASSIVE drop when looking at the center.

Low FPS still when I approach and look at the signs. Have the signs been optimized yet ? They seem to be the cause of performance issues.

I’m averaging 56-60fps in space and in stations on foot High/Ultra mix with AA and FidelityFX CAS (it’s going above 60, but my screen won’t support it, so I’ve locked it to 60).

On planets, it’s the same 56-60fps. It seems to drop to its lowest as I enter an instance, then it stabilises out

Will note down performance in settlements when I can.

We have the same GPU, but your system spec is better than mine, so odd your FPS is so low....

i do have better performance pretty much everywhere.
but there is a strange bug that sometimes halves my fps.
20 fps in the hangar, and after a relog it is back to 40.
and ground cz seem broken, i guess it is the ai

edit: just had a working ground cz, seems in some settlements the ai stalls, others are good

I’ve not seen the relog change personally. But then I’m not having drops around concourses or hangers, only settlements.

I agree, it doesn’t seem to be all settlements getting these huge drops in fps.
Not even identical type & size ones.

Awful at Dembele Drilling Station, Atria Bao.
Smooth at Allegro mining prospect, hip 13977.
Exact same layouts, tested both at night. difference. Atria bao was a metal rich body i think. Hip 13977 icy.
extreme difference in perf at both.

ps. In both cases lowest fps outside going back and forth between the drilling rig & pwr building. But at atria bao one it is unplayable.

Getting sent to a settlement or POI where you have half decent FPS is like finding El Dorado. So enjoyable suddenly.
Hehe yeah.
btw, just to be clear this is ONLY since Update 5 for me. Update 4 no such issue.

Clear repro, isolated change between 2 patches. so it’ll get fixed if we can only get fdevs attention on it!

I've been having this since release. By update 3 I was 10-20 FPS up in some situations, by update 5 it was back at launch values (and sometimes slightly worse even). In most settlements regardless of the circumstances I struggle to get more than 40-50 FPS at best at Low settings.

For me, Performance is worse, but let me back up a bit.

Average Framerates are actually up (slightly) however there is much more frametime inconsistency, especially in large settlements, resulting in a significantly worse experience. This is with the new AMD upscaling on or off. No settings seem to affect this atrocious frametime anomalies.

So as far as I'm concerned, Update 5 is an F -

I would much preferred to have lost maybe 1-10FPS on average and being able to find settings tweaks, than gained 5-15 FPS but with these frametime issues (creating brief moments of irredeemably low frame rate stuttering)

Yeah, after one of the patches, it'd sometimes completely freeze for a few seconds, but that got fixed in later updates, so I hope this will be the same. Though i wonder if it's the same problem, but this time instead of a hard freeze, the game can squeeze in a couple frames when it happens.
