Update 5 Performance Thread

I think some occlusion culling isn't working after update 5 at some places. You can check at ARAI'S MINE on IAH BULU, one of the best places to farm in Odyssey, it's a big extraction settlement, go there and just wander around, inside buildings eventually the frame drop will happen(while inside building try to look to the drills direction).
I just ran a settlement mission, and the settlement had drills, and my FPS dropped from 60FPS everywhere else in game to under 20 FPS. Elsewhere, though, it is fine.... getting between 50-60FPS in station concourses, for example. Running settings between Ultra and High (used Nvidia GeForce Experience optimized settings). GTX 1660 Super

Since update 5 dropped I've been getting some serious FPS drops in settlements, and it's not consistent. It'll be perfectly fine one minute then suddenly drop into single digits the next before recovering again.

edit: it seems consistent with what people earlier in the thread were saying about it happening when ships arrive at the settlements.

This is particularly galling because up until this point odyssey had been performing fine for me. GG Fdev, you managed to make the game unplayable even for the people who weren't having problems before.

I have this since the server restart on friday... before it was fine.

There appears to be two main issues currently:

1. Low consistent frame rates. This can sometimes be temporarily alleviated with Super Sampling at below 1.0 and using the AMD FidelityFX CAS option though I'd hate to rely on this as a fix for low consistent frame rates.

2. The main issue for me is that I can get reasonable frame rates and then all of a sudden it drops. If I then exit to the main menu and reload (ie to the same area) then the fps returns to normal. I remember this same thing happened when Horizons first launched (with the new planet tech) when driving on planets where things would start off ok and then degrade over time and you'd need to reload the game to return to previous frame rates. They eventually fixed this. Seems like some sort of regression in the engine.

Ok, so after this, I jumped over to a settlement my faction just won in a war. I also dropped down some settings (terrain material quality, ambient occlusion, and FX quality) as one my squad mates suggested. I was getting 45fps in this 2nd settlement (Collins Chemical, Goansi system), which was anywhere from 20-35 FPS better than the other settlement I was in previously.

So, graphics settings and/or the type of settlement appears to impact performance, at least in my case.

In addition to the stuttering performance, since P2 or 3, and all the way to P5, I will get a CTD the first time I run Odyssey, guaranteed, within the first 5 minutes.

Once reloaded, it will run 'fine' (for Odyssey definitions of fine) for the rest of the play session.

Update 5 - PC
i7 7820X - 4.5GHz on all 16 Threads
64Gb RAM 3200 Quad-Channel 52ns Latency
Asus 3090 Strix OC

4K - Native
43-55 FPS onfoot inside station main concourse
47-57 FPS onfoot during combat CZ in a settlement
Everywhere else is above 60 fps

4K - 0.85x SMAA with AMD Fidelity FX ON [slider to the max]
Above 60 FPS onfoot inside station main concourse
53-58 FPS onfoot during combat CZ in a settlement
FPS goes over 60 stable after CZ finishes

(seems like NPC gameplay is bottlenecking game networking capabilities on a 240Megabit internet connection which is somehow causing stuttering and FPS drop)

AI is calculating on client side, no? And it eats a lot of cpu cycles. What a spaghetti code that must be.

Last minute, it drops from 40 to 8, for what?

And it has these seizures every minute.

So, Update 5 brings a lot of great on the table, but new performance issues as well.

Setup: RTX 2060 OC, i7-8600, 32 GB RAM
Game setup: Low, lowest of the low, 2560×1080

FPS:
  • Stations: 50--80 FPS
  • Settlements: 45--60 FPS, but sometimes 15--20, it just stutters.

There are few of my videos where I am describing that issue:

This is exactly what's happening with me, and this can eventually occur anywhere(specially at big settlements), even in space some micro stuttering is happening and i didn't have any issues before this patch
