Update 5 Performance Thread

Yeah, CZs are worse now on average - getting red fps counters a lot more often now, whereas before it was quite rare that it'd dip below 30.

Imagine playing a twitch shooter at 10-15fps ... back like it's 1995 again.

I was a console player back then so... no comment :)
Sorry, but obligatory 🤣

has anyone tried to play in windowed or borderless mode instead of full screen and to turn off vsync and use the fps limiter option instead?

I don't know what that means :D

The 90s though... despite the obvious shortcomings due to technical restrictions it was probably the most exciting time period for me in my gaming 'career' - away from broken/buggy and ugly 8bit computer games (C64 represent yo) to slick, innovative (for the time) switch-on-and-play 16bit era which birthed many classics that are still very playable even today.

Lack of information (no web, only monthly game print mags) and fewer AAA releases and the hype was real - and when there was a killer app it was played to absolute death because I had limited funds and it was always an expensive hobby especially for a teenager without rich parents.

The only game that had me rejoice in similar excitement in more recent times was MSFS2020.

Kids nowadays don't know how good they have it, at least from a technical perspective /shakes fist at sky

I like this thread. :)

Computer....
CPU: Intel i7-9800X
GPU: MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2666MHz RAM(x3)
MBD: Asus WS X299 Pro/SE
SSD: 1TB WD Black M.2 PCI(x2)
Sound Card: ASUS Xonar D2X Audio Device
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Version 2004
VR: Valve Index

When playing on foot I don't play in VR, so.....
Non VR - Ultra graphics preset, 1920x1080 resolution, capped at 90FPS, it usually sticks to 90FPS until I get near a station then it drops, to 80ish, then when landing at a surface port it will be in the 65-75FPS, once on foot 90FPS.
VR - VR Low graphics preset, 150% supersampling, desktop at 1280x768 resolution, in space flying around I'm getting 45FPS at best, space stations it will be 30FPS and then landing at a surface port it will be 20FPS, once inside on foot 90FPS. Leaving a surface port is not nice, 10FPS and I drop thousands of frames, both my CPU and GPU struggle to keep up and I stop playing the game as it never seems to get back to where it was.

It was the glorious PC Master Race meme :D

But I do agree, the 90ies was wild. Every 2-3 years a new paradigm, and most genres were represented, games not made by committee. I mean the current AAA monstrosities can be awe inspiring, but I miss the old stuff :D

3700X with 2060S 8 Gig and 32gig RAM. NvMe 4.0 SSD.

Was 60 FPS in space and still is. Its frame limited by my lousy 60hz monitor. I only play in 1080p Ultra.

Running around settlements has dropped about 5-10 fps but the biggest issue is that it just randomly will tank to ~17 fps every now and then, destroying the gameplay.

And my GPU and CPU temps! what! They gone up about 15 to 20 degrees!!!!

NOT HAPPY.

Please fix it Fdev.

RTX 3070, i7 10600F 16GB RAM 8GB VRAM, os+game on nvme ultra setting minus upscaling (not even looking at the settlement which is behind the srv at this point and also constant crashing to desktop)

EDIT: Fortunately, all settlements are not like this but 10-15% framerate loss and stuttering is a lot more frequent (noticed also keyboard/mouse unresponsiveness under GPU load)

Yep - most modern games look nice for sure, but they often lack... soul. Anyways, I'm not wishing back ye olde days but it's nice to have some perspective (and a Raspberry Pi with RetroPie/EmulationStation installed ;)).

1080p capped at 60 FPS on a 2060 6gb at Medium to Ultra settings, 1.0 sampling.

Saw zero change in FPS but rather noticable boost to visual quality presumably from the AMD thing.

Haven't Tested the thing that usually drops my FPS below 60 yet, foot combat zones.

GTX 1080ti 11GB DDR5 VRAM, 16GB DDR4, i7 8700, Z370 Mobo.

I was getting sub 10fps in some settlements. Prior to update 5 I was getting 45fps in the same settlements. I've now disabled their new all singing all dancing graphics updates in an attempt to turn this 4-bar heater that's sitting next to me into a computer again.

Right, the laptop I'm playing at the moment:

AMD Ryzen 5, 3 Ghz
16 gigs of RAM
Nvidia 1650

If I'd be just flying in space and landing on stations, I'd be running with ultra settings with a pretty steady 60 FPS.

But, with Odyssey, I'm playing with mid settings, oversampling set to 0.65.

Concourse: 30-45 fps
Planets and planet bases: 30-45 fps
Flying in space: 60 fps
Ground combat zones: 20-30 fps

I'm going to uninstall Elite and Odysse for a bit now. I'll check again later after a couple of new patches whenever they might come.

Getting good result with 0.85 ss and AMD Fidelity Cas slider roughly in the middle. Game looks sharp and my fps went up to the point that fires are not an issue anymore. Also, I've disabled window reflection, and that helped a lot too.

After my initial excitement that there was an improvement on my end following yesterdays patch, coming back to it today I have found significant decrease in performance yet again. Planets and settlements are the worse, with concourse being a close second with the windows and glass panes.

I also still have the issue of models and textures not loading correctly and being distorted and crumpled. Also the AA is really bad with very prominent jagged lines everywhere which makes settlements hard to view.

Still no difference in little to no performance changes using either LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH & ULTRA presets or a variation . And still completely burns out the GPU.

This AMD Fidelity FX CAS that was introduced I cannot see if it works with my GTX 970 and there is a lot of conflicting information whether it works on that GPU or not, I have asked FDev CMs a fair few times but not really had a response. It makes no difference to what I see.

I really hope they don't leave it till console release for the next update/patch, as I have come across a number of bugs. And the performance is still unplayable for the most part.

It does seem like the issue of degrading FPS still persists on Odyssey after patch 5. After a while, something begins to throttle down FPS and you need to restart the game completely. On that note, the FPS fluctuation doesn't seem as severe as it was with the previous versions.

RTX 2060, 1080p, High/Ultra mix (as it mostly makes no bloody difference, anyway)

I'm only checking busy planetary bases nowadays, because it doesn't help me if the coriolis is at 60, that's not where the fps gameplay happens.
Same only difference I got a GTX1080OC and i get some missions where the npcs don't spawn in
