To borrow your own syntax, salute =/= sticky-outy arm salute.
Throwing your arm forward and down after it's been held parallel to your brow =/= extending your arms outward and flat at an upwards angle above eye level
Regardless, though, the main point was simply that a means of communicating with other players was something that was glaringly absent from the launch of EDO and now we have this?
Would it not have been better to come up with, say, a dialogue-wheel that could be accessed by a hotkey and then allows the player to issue a bunch of useful communications?
You are aware there is an entire on-foot chat system and has been since release, right? You have quick chat that can be brought up by hitting the Enter key and allows you to press TAB to switch through channels, or the entire chat system (Local, System, Wing, Squadron, etc.) that can be brought up from the Q radial menu. This has always been in Odyssey.
The whole "gesture" thing just seems, as I said, rather trite.
You really don't think it is?
If you mean the dictionary definition of trite, then, sure? Emotes are pretty common, but I don't think that devalues them. Immersion is a plenty-fair reason behind a gameplay addition, as well as increasing player interactivity (sure would be nice to get a wave instead of a crouch spam when I see someone in a station) and believability, and the Point emote even serves a gameplay function because it tags things for people in your team.
