Update 8?

New to the forums (as a member, but I've lurked for a long time), yes, but far from new to Elite Dangerous. My total hours across console and PC are around 1500 and I started shortly after Horizons original release, though I'm not sure how relevant that is other than you trying to find some way to invalidate what I'm saying. That being said, if you are as disillusioned with this game and FDev as you say but still have twelve THOUSAND hours in it, it can't be nearly as bad as you're insinuating can it? ;)
It's not relevant at all but some here who are as proficient at moving goalposts also moonlight as gatekeepers.

The title on that video is literally Update 8 Incoming Features, not Update 8 Incoming Performance Fixes or A Comprehensive And Exhaustive List of What Is Coming In Update 8

Features implies new stuff. It's a trailer showing new stuff. I don't know how much clearer they could have made it, but the OP's complaint is a bit like having a go at an ad for a car because it didn't mention all the fixes to loose trim or squeaky noises from the previous model.

On these topics in the past, id probably have something to say in the direction of expecting the best for everyone.

But after years of studying broken or abort ion baked software vs frontiers marketing, i think i can respect that unless they have solution ready to go / incoming immediately its probably wise not to say anything.

So you have to read from silence to the expectation of getting odysee to the level of horizons, they literally don't know if its going to happen, or at least when it will happen by. If that wasn't the case it would be safe to say so.

Then they can get cracking on the subjective downgrades vs horizons, their self set standard :)

Update 8 are just cosmetics I don't see progress in any way. Key Features like Base Building, Mining Camps, full access to all atmosheric worlds including gas giants still missing after 6 years. Poor development! and omg the on foot VR solution it's a joke.

Call me names, set my house on fire, try to get me fired . . . but . . . why do we not take the good, ol' fashioned approach of waiting until Update 8 comes out, so we can see what it contains?

THEN we can go ballistic. Those of us who are so inclined, anyway. Right now, it's much ado about nuffin'.

Sorry.

Anybody else seen the trailer FDev posted to advertise Odyssey update 8?

Basically, we're getting 4 player MC and hand-gestures.

The first thing that I took away from this video was that FDev seem to be attempting to ignore the train-wreck that Odyssey was/is and focus on "new features" instead.
The second thing I took away from this video is that these "new features" are really, really, inane.

I mean, didn't FDev say that they were going to focus on getting PC Odyssey "fixed" prior to a console release?
How is 4 player MC and hand-gestures contributing to either of those objectives?

MC was hopeless at the best of times.
Then FDev released Odyssey, which split the user-base into two camps (EDO and EDH) which rendered MC twice as useless.
And now they're adding an extra seat so THREE other people can ignore MC instead of just 2?!

And, hand-gestures?
Yes, it would've been nice if there was an easy way for players to communicate but, erm, this isn't it.
Dunno if FDev were shooting for some kind of Fortnite-style gimmick but, erm, this isn't it.

And, are we going to talk about how some of the gestures seem to look a lot like the salute of a certain German political party from the early 20th century?
I see no way such a gesture might be abused as a means of offending. 🤨

I'd like to remain optimistic that update 8 WILL also include new optimisations, bug-fixes and improvements to the lighting but it's way, way, too soon for FDev to be trying to sweep the fundamental problems with Odyssey under the carpet in favour of advertising such trite nonsense.
The primary thing that both existing players AND potential new players need to hear, for the forseeable future, is that the existing game is being fixed.
Sorry Stealthie......I disagree!

If that's your opinion then so be it!

Personally I think Frontier have the balance right here by concentrating on bug squashing (hopefully) & improving optimization/fps for everyone (hopefully)......AND also adding a couple of new things for us as well.......that would have been in the pipeline anyway!

It's wrong to suggest that Frontier "...are attempting to be ignoring the train wreck that Odyssey was/is..",
I see differently from how you see it, as since the launch, I'd say ALMOST EVERY Stream put out by the team has been focused on giving us more information than we ever had before into what they are trying to fix & when. Continually saying that the accept that things aren't good for everyone & that some things are not simple fixes & could take time.

No one will say that Odyssey's release was a good one, for whatever reason it was pushed out waaay too soon.......Frontier can't change that now. All they can do is fix what they can, when they can as soon as they can, for everyone to enjoy.

Sadly though, like a dog with a bone, some player's just won't let that go & complain no matter what Frontier will do for months/years to come!

I must say, if I was soo unhappy about the state of a game & stopped playing it, I certainly wouldn't waste any of my time posting about it on a game forum.

For the record, since Odyssey launched, I'v played it almost every single day, first on my i5 GTX 1050 laptop (giving me from 10-30max fps - depending what I was doing & where) now on my i7 RTX 2060 laptop (getting 60fps max down to 50 in Settlements).

Never once have I wanted to or needed to load up Horizons......let alone do it just to report how crappy Odyssey is in the same locations 🤷‍♂️

Maybe I'm just lucky & my laptop runs well enough for me to enjoy, what is afterall.....a game;)

Please don't talk sense on these forums. Talking sense is not what we are here for. We are here for the Drama!

? Waiting to see how an update turns out BEFORE lambasting the devs has ZILCH do to with being a fanboy, and EVERYTHING with being an adult. If waiting and seeing how it turns out BEFORE passing judgement turns me into a "fanboy," then, why, YES, I'd much, much rather be a "fanboy" . . . though I'll replace that word with "reasonably intelligent," if you don't mind. And, no, caterwauling BEFORE we even KNOW what Update 8 actually DOES is NOT "more intelligent." It's remarkably like being a true "fanboi," only the dark-side version.

Don't get me wrong. Feel free to criticise once update 8 drops and does NOT deliver improvements. I'm only saying flaming before it is even there is a trifle, well, premature.

It's wrong to suggest that Frontier "...are attempting to be ignoring the train wreck that Odyssey was/is..",
And it's also I think important to note that, while the performance issues are preventing people from playing it at all, and while there's definitely some fun gameplay in there if you can get an acceptable frame rate, the "train wreck" was as much about missing/poorly-done features as it was about bugs. The initial iteration UI rewrite wasn't particularly buggy, it was just missing a bunch of key features. The requirement to hand in 40 opinion polls was perfectly bug-free in implementation, just excessive in gameplay terms, etc.

Everything they've said for update 8 is something which really should have been in from the start.
