Update on Communication

Hey Arthur, that’s the kind of post you put out to the community when your issues have put you 1 or 2 weeks out of communication with the community. It’s been 2 months. 2 months means an explanation is needed. Some political jargon where you say nothing in as many words as possible is silly.
Yeah, people were already speculating if something big is brewing since they missed the January announcement deadline.

Turned out to be an announcement of future announcements 😅

Thanks for the update about the pending update.

I've been just lurking the forums to see if the dust has finally settled on EDO patching (at least relatively), so I can start calling again for VR to be fixed, as right now the game is split in half for VR users. It doesn't need to work with motion controllers. It'd be sufficient if the devs lock the camera to the head position and let us continue to use our standard input device of choice, i.e. gamepad, keyboard & mouse, etc. They could put a motion sickness warning message on the load screen in VR, regarding the absence of motion options, and leave it at that. If at some point they agree to improve on that, great, but at least we won't be stuck with a jarring 2D panel in 3D space in the meantime. I've taken a break from playing, but when I do return, I still won't be doing any EVA.

Ok… obviously upon first blush, reading those words, people are a bit annoyed that it’s taken so long for them to say anything at all. Understandable!

HOWEVER … considering how cagey Frontier requires everyone working there to be, this statement says several things that offer stuff to be excited about. Read the statement again. Content, features, story. I’m just glad he didn’t use the word “optimization”. Big news if true. Just as long as he doesn’t consider changing some color revisions as content.

Greetings Commanders,

I want to speak directly about the lack of official streams and reduced communications from our social channels since the start of 2022. I understand the concerns this has caused and hope this statement goes some way to alleviate them.

The whole team are excited to share all of the upcoming content for this year including new updates, content expansions and the next major phase in the ongoing narrative following the Azimuth Saga finale. Beyond this, we also look forward to sharing our new streaming format when the series returns as a weekly show. Changes will include new segments, year-round Twitch Drop campaigns and studio-quality production once we move back into the office.

However, there are several questions that must be answered internally to inform this communication plan. It is important to me that we address key subjects by priority and when we do that the information we provide is clear. The team and I are working incredibly hard behind the scenes to gather this information and provide these answers.

As always, the team and I are grateful for your patience and support while we wait for the opportunity to share all of the above with you. We will update you with more detail as soon as we can.

See you in the black o7.

"You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot." ;)

I must have missed that. Or maybe a joke I don't understand right now (I'm feeling very humourless today). Otherwise: Citation please?
Speaking of SC: In his unfathomable wisdom, CR must have foreseen this development:

They should have called the game, Elite Dangerous: Hurry Up and Wait. Does Frontier work for the Ministry of Defense?

Be that as it may, I appreciate the update. Hopefully we will get some juicy info soon, particularly about the fate of our console commander brethren.

Promising the proverbial cat in a bag only works for so long.

There's absolutely nothing that I haven't read or heard about in the OP that I haven't before. It might still work for the more gullible in the community but these continuing non-statements without showing any of the goods they refer to constantly have the opposite effect to me now. Look at what they promised in December. Then look at the past 8 weeks. No apology for non-delivery, no real heads-up what's going on and why other than some fluff and yet more promises without getting more specific.

Especially after having been burned last year believing the magical main trunk (tm) story in the run up to launch, from the very same individual no less.

Everyone: Why don't Frontier just publish a quick update telling us the game isn't dead?
Frontier: Publishes a quick update telling everyone the game isn't dead
Everyone: No, we meant a cast-iron development roadmap, a console release date and where are the ship interiors.
Ah, the community is a single entity trick.

I think it would be fairer to say that different parts of the community have wanted these different strands of information and have done so for some time. Some may even have wanted several or all of these strands, but all that was on offer was another it'll be great in an unspecified future.

I really understand why the CMs want to stay away.
No matter what they say, people will complain.

It's a hard job to to.
It is a hard job to do, but obviously, with completely diametric views in the community on various issues, whatever Frontier do will result in complaints.

However, what tends to unite the community is Frontier (apparently) doing nothing at all.

It may have already been said, but it’s worth noting that Frontier was in the process of hiring a new senior gameplay designer for Elite a few weeks ago. What that’ll end up meaning for the game is anyone’s guess, but it definitely makes sense that FDev went quiet while they hash out plans with the new gameplay lead, and it’s very clear proof that any “doom” predictions are wildly premature. Why hire a new gameplay designer for a game you don’t plan to support much longer? 😝

Whatever happens, I do hope Frontier announces something more concrete before the community meet up in a couple weeks, otherwise the poor CMs are gonna be bombarded with tons of questions they can’t answer.
Was Elite explicitly mentioned in the job ad? As they could just as well have been hired for any of the other IPs. Or the existing one bailed/got fired.

My 2 penneth - I just take this as Arf and the gang have a plan, and know what they wish to communicate, but want to make sure that the coy will back them up / actually provide what is needed.

I suspect he doesn't want what has happened in the last 8 months to happen again. I do wonder if he was dropped in it bit with the release of Odyssey i.e. what we got, compared to what he thought we were getting.

Anyway, thats my totally pointless speculation.

Only time will tell.
