Using Thrustmaster HOTAS on XBOX one: Advice HERE

Just in case this may prove to be of use for some in the future...

Copilot links two controllers so you can use them as if they were one controller. The person who turns on Copilot for their controller is the pilot. The pilot gets all achievements and Gamerscore.

  1. Connect a second controller to the Xbox for the copilot. The copilot can sign in or not – achievements and gamerscore don't go to this player.
  2. Using the pilot's controller, press the Xbox button to open the guide, select System > Settings > Ease of Access > Controller.
[*]Choose Copilot settings, then select Turn on Copilot.
    [*]Select the copilot controller.
The controllers are now linked, and both controllers have full control. When you start a game, you can use either controller however you like.To turn off Copilot, go back to the Copilot settings and select Turn off Copilot.
Sadly this dosent work, it was suggested by someone (can't remember sorry) on the Xbox bugs subforum when 3.0 first dropped. It's now Hotas or Controller now not both

I just realized how much easier it is to do a proper strafing run using the HOTAS.

That emplacement power generator had no chance and the enemy emplacement missiles and AA guns were of no effect!

Also found out:
XBOX games using HOTAS:
Air Missions Hind (I have not played), Rotating Wing Aircraft only.

Upcoming games that MIGHT use HOTAS?
War Thunder, WW1 through WWII flight? will it have semi-modern planes?
Ace Combat 7, seems like modern fighters only?

People that play and enjoy these games should be encouraged to give Elite a try.

Aye, they should. There's no doubting my years of playing flight action games religiously since the PS2 days is a big factor in me liking ED so much.

I use xbox app on phone

You are brilliant. I have a USB keyboard that fits behind my HOTAS on my lap when I'm spamming other random players ("Know any good pizza places around here?")

Are you sure it doesn't work? This is actually what I came to tell you guys about, because I got it working in Titanfall 2, so I can play Pilot with my controller and drive Titan with my stick & throttle, but then again, my HOTAS is.....ahem......"nonstandard". I DID notice that on the copilot screen, you can scroll left and right, so is it possible that it's showing 2 gamepads, and you're just looking at the wrong one? I had to swap my sticks to get HOTAS to work, and at first I swapped it on the wrong controller. If you can navigate the dashboard with the HOTAS, then I would think the Xbox is "seeing" it.

My original idea, and why I came here, was the notion of flying with the HOTAS and driving the SRV with the controller.

Also, my stick has suction cups on the bottom, making it a little bit more feasible, but the way I play is with the HOTAS between my legs, where I sit on the couch. I use an item called a "fracture bedpan" flipped upside down (you know how when you're about to come home from the hospital and hurriedly grab everything unused, because it's all gonna get thrown away anyway?) that I flipped upside down. The pointy end goes into my crotchious area, and I cross my ankles when I sit, so the stick rests nicely on top, angled toward me (the bulk of the pan rests on the insides of my calves), and I can just uncross my legs and set it down when I need to get up. Throttle sits right next to me on the couch. I've been playing that way since the Ace Combat 6 days.

Hopefully you can picture what I mean. It's not perfect, but I played so much Steel Talons in my younger days, I got spoiled having the collective front and center!

I do actually own a full Playseat racing seat setup, but that's more for special occasions when I'm playing racing games. I play wayyy too much Elite, plus hopping to other games, so couch it is!

Edit: I can post a pic later, if it's too hard to visualize.

I tried it and couldn't make it work or to recognise anything but my elite controller. That's not the same as saying it dosent work though so if you succeed in getting it to work with elite please put up a detailed list of instructions because I very much would like to resurrect my 2.4 setup

I would trust the troubleshooting skills of anyone who plays Elite. ;)

In my case, I'm using an adapter, so as far as the Xbox is concerned, I have 2 regular controllers hooked up. I have a friend who has the T-Flight that could test, but like I said, I'm sure (as long as you were aware that you can toggle left and right to the other controller, cos I missed it the first time) that you tried everything. Just out of curiosity, what do you see when you go into the copilot screen, just one controller? If it does show 2, you could always try swapping the sticks on one and then check and see if it had an effect on either controller...but again, I'm assuming you would've tried that already, if it were an option. :)

Yes, it's so much better, it just feels natural. And with all the buttons there are so many combos! Who needs a Keyboard?;)
And I like the cockpit feeling! I added a side-panel to make things more comfortable. I was thinking about the pedals too but I don't know where to put them when not in use and they are not really cheap for what they ad.

That is absolutely gorgeous! I need a setup like that!

Only saw one controller, I will have another play later this week but I am away with work now until Easter

Apologies if this has been answered already, but can you currently have two distinct custom profiles for pad and HOTAS, at the same time (without one wiping out the other)? And I don't mean plugged in, as I gather that doesn't work, but if you yank the HOTAS and turn the pad on to switch between them.

At the moment I'm still using the HOTAS for menus, outfitting, gal-map, and so on, and I still find it a nuisance.

Don't know mate, I haven't done that. If nobody has said something by the time I get back home I will have a play around

Yes there is a custom profile for HOTAS and another for Xbox controller however in order to use one you must start the game with the device in question, switching between the two whilst in game does not work.

Really? Gah, that sucks. I meant to test it out last night so no one messed up their settings giving me an answer, but I got distracted by Dragon's Dogma being on sale.

I wish the keyboard worked within the game menus (cursor keys and select/return work on the front-end), as I'd prefer to use that instead of the stick. I suppose the odd pad-only session to mix things up when exploring would be feasible, as little's gained by using HOTAS for such a routine task.

Ok, I've used my HOTAS for a couple weeks and here is my feedback -

1) The chair you're sitting at makes a huge difference I think. Thor's set up is godly (pun intended). I found a small lap table and it's a pain in the hoo ha to use if I know I have to get up to answer the call of nature, kids, etc etc. (Con, but could be a positive...)
2) It has a ton of extra button combinations to use and YES I've found a home for the F5 button! (Pro)
3) Coming out of high wake FSD it's much easier to slow down in my Type 9 to avoid ramming into a large ball of nuclear fusion (Pro)
4) The stock USB cord is way too short for my liking. (Con)
5) Don't like where they put the thrust up / down. I have long fingers and it doesn't feel natural for me. (Con but have been too lazy to switch with the levers to the left of it...)

It's a great controller and I'm happy I have it, but I'm definitely not used to it. I accidentally hit thrust and got trapped in the airlock, incurring a fine and almost having my ship destroyed... I'm hoping to find a different table for it in the near future, I think that'd really help.

I keep my Xbox controller plugged in wired, as it has a chat pad attached which I use in the same way a USB keyboard works. Xbox Glass can be used too I'm told and allows for cut and paste from external tools.

it's your y button. The button that initiates jump sequence aborts it if pressed again.
there's a bug with the display. it should show the y button symbol in your case.
For me it shows "xb1htsb1" means Xbox 1 hotas B1.
