Guide / Tutorial Voice Controlling Elite:Dangerous - A Guide

Found VA to be self explanatory to be honest. Takes several tries though to train it to recognize certain words like "comms" especially if you have a cold. I've got a VA bind for Galaxy map though so I just say "map" which is handy when you're using a HOTAS.

How does VA handle the Scottish Problem?

http://youtu.be/5FFRoYhTJQQ

I'm the worst kind of voice: Scottish with a lisp. I had spent a good deal of time yelling "Full Steam Ahead!" repeatedly at the top of my lungs.

There's an option "Show confidence level" which helps me a lot. I only use a few select phrases chosen for the sound difference between them. I'm managing a confidence level of around 60%

I am still having problems with execute commands, I cannot get them to work, it recognizes the command and does nothing. My in game control profile is Thrust master T. I am using hotas va profile. Do I have to set it to something else? Key binds work fine.

Some extra info on x64 voices.

just reposting so everyone can see alternatives if you want to spend a little money. Take it or leave it, I hope it helps. IVONA Indian English Raveena is my fav voice.

Cereproc
https://www.cereproc.com/en/support/live_demo">https://www.cereproc.com/en/support/live_demo (demo at top of page)

These Cereproc voices are pretty cheap and do offer a good cheaper alternative to IVONA in many languages.

If anyone is looking to buy some good x64 voices. Open SAPI5 voices that can work both as windows default x64 voice and any x64 app - inc Voice Attack, Teamspeak x64 etc.

I think the best x64 voices (open sapi5 to work as default windows x64 voice and any other x64 app) are really only the ones from IVONA, and AT&T (Buy + Demo), and then this other company called Cereproc. I've searched the internet and there are none better in my opinion than IVONA and Cereproc, with a 3rd place by AT&T.

There are two others in the top list Nuance (really good), and Acapela but these two only work with the partnered software from Nextup.com , and are not Open SAPI5 which I mentioned above you need in order for x64 bit voices to work in other windows x64 apps like Voice attack/teamspeak x64 etc. Although I've not tried this to see its wrong, not without buying them.

AT&T are ok, but locked into their own readers so no use for use here. My favourites are IVONA and Cereproc. Plus Cereproc and IVONA are the only ones that offer x64 bit Opensapi5 voices that can be used with any x64 bit software like MS windows x64 (7,8.1,10) Teamspeak x64, and of course voice attack. Plus any reader app like the free IVONA mini reader.

IVONA
http://www.ivona.com/en/voices/">http://www.ivona.com/en/voices/

Cereproc do very good Scottish and other UK accents. Still not quite as good and clear as IVONA, but for the cheap price they are £25.99 https://www.cereproc.com/en/storesapi are good value I think.

I do like the Scottish Heather voice. And there are many other 'moody' voices like the Scottish Dodo one, and Scottish Stuart is very good. The Irish ones, and Sue English 'black country' accent. You can hear the different accents. Good to have this many to choose from so you get your perfect AI voice, or buy a few and chop and change them.

And if you want a J.A.R.V.I.S. from Ironman, then the cereproc 'Giles' or 'William' are pretty good 'English butler' voices.

Very popular voice requests you could cash in on are:

J.A.R.V.I.S. from Ironman - the posh english AI butler voice.
Alan Rickman as Marvin the Paranoid Android from the film the Hitchikers Guide to the Galxay.
GLaDOS - the AI robot voice helper from the Valve games Portal 2, and Portal 1 - [best online generator voice for this is here]

In fact for English 'English' and 'Scottish' voices, the cereproc ones do have more life and personality in them. I like them. And for windows reading back to me, I've just bought IVONA Indian English Raveena, and a couple from cereproc. I plan to use VA for some time so feel happy to pay for the voices, lifetime licences and upgrades remember.

cereproc voice are a little cheaper, maybe not quite as clear as IVONA, but they have more regional US/UK accents which is fun.

Hope this helps.

Is there some way to get Voice Attack to detect what is going on in the game? I ask because in the video below at 3:22, ASTRA asks "is there a problem here" just before he gets hit with an interdiction. Shortly after that it tells him he "should consider leaving. The ship is damaged." Is this even possible?

I don't have the ASTRA voice pack but my understanding is it is just a voice pack + profile for VA. How can it work like in that video?

I have a ED VA profile here with bindings which use the games default key-bind's with some changes for Xbox Controller support all importants mapped to controller and keyboard I added binds for things which have no binds as well.

If anyone is interested they can try it out here it also uses a voice pack but I provide that as well

I use cereproc Heather. There are a number of "emotion" settings you can use to vary the voice, plus what they call "spurts" such as "eh" or a laugh.
I'm building my own VA profile in a series of layers: the basic ship commands, then more complex things bulit on top. As there is no API yet, I'm setting a number of Conditions to mimc various counts such as number of shield cells left, etc. You do need a system to initialise these at start of play, and reset them/ toggle them if you need to though.

I could post the VA profile if people think it would be useful?

Well i bought VA and the HCS pack ASTRA, got it working on ED,however when i say "deploy weapons" ,ASTRA acknowledges it ,but the weapons don't get deployed. Other commands work ,yet some dont.
Im using a T Flight HOTAS X as well. Which profile with ASTRA should i use ?The basic or the HOTAS one?

Take a look in C:\Program Files (x86)\VoiceAttack\Sounds\hcspack\Profiles\Binds. I used the keyboard binds, copy the file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1003\ControlSchemes( your applications paths may be different from mine)Then in game I put my T Flight HOTAS X binds and any different binds that i want in the right side column. Do not change anything in the left hand column.

Edit update: The file you will be looking for in voice attack is HCSPacks KB+M.binds in the default keys directory.

Bump.... is this document on the OP still valid? I haven't got around to using Voice Attack yet but I'm thinking of setting it up in the next few days.

I could not play Elite without Voice Attack, its part of the whole experiance.

I also could not use Voice Attack with out the Voice packs, ASTRA and LEO. I profile swap between them flawlessly, its fun and OMG so much easier with 150 different controls to remember. *haha*

Having had many weeks to change and alter my alter ego Emma (who has attitude issues) I thought it was time to pay-it-forward and offer it out for use by others. (obviously it is set up for my needs and you will have to amend for your needs, So bear in mind my key bindings may not be the same as yours but their easy to change once you grasp the concept lol...

As for emma well you can change as you see fit...

(There are multi-functions activated and deactivated hence size of the file) enjoy Commanders.

:D

sadly this link no longer works, do you still have the profile (or an updated one), available?

Please let me know!
Thanks!

Hi there since that was first posted many have gone the way of voice packs from HSC and Ripley Galactic and Voiceattack to has grown and changed so has the vap file as it is now geared more to my setup. If you are planning to programme it rather than using voicepacks then that's great. I am happy to offer the basic vap but you may find you have a lot to alter with it. I offer no guarantees that it still works ;)

Good Luck

I'm a real technophobe but I've managed to get Vasco working which in all honesty is a miracle. I'm not using it to full effect yet but hope to develop my knowledge base.

But what I have to say is quite simply.

I've not laughed quite so hard playing a computer game when Vasco suddenly comes out with something random. Love it for the comedy value if nothing else!

I have tried Voicebot with no luck, so decided to have a go at this very easy and what could be useful program.
My only problem seems to be me and my voice, I am a Londoner and was born there 68 years ago so not likely to change my voice.
The only command that I can get to work is "Target panel" the others come up with nothing even slightly related. My wife has tried a few commands and most work for her.
Any suggestions? apart from give up.
