Guide / Tutorial Voice Controlling Elite:Dangerous - A Guide

I don't think there's a subscription, you just have to check the beta download page fairly regularly. Me, I don't even have ED yet, so I just use the latest official release to have fun preparing some commands so I'll have a fully functionnal assistant when the final game is released!

In the meantime, I have fun using a "titanfall" voice command in the game of the same name :p

looking at your profiles now - very good stuff, informative too.

I've been compiling a glossary of responses. A to Z of space exploration terms, there's hundreds but I'm half way through. They'll be finished in 2 weeks from now (lot of work). I'll post them as a separate profile so the glossary can be imported as "stand-alone".

My advice - dont download anyone elses profile. Its entirely up to you but what you might find is it changes key assignments you have already set up and got used to. If you understand the PDF instructions then you can make your own profile.

If you must use someone elses, just download their profile, stick the file in a folder on your HDD where your profile is, then when you open up Voice Attack you can choose to use whatever profile you wish to.

^^ Yes, it's a shame ED's controls need to be so personalised. But the fact there's so many controls, and mixed in with this are people's own controllers and own preferences of use, it makes a VA profile a right pain.

If I were to release a VA profile I'd see if I could make every key depression (frmo VA) something different to stand out.
SHIFT+CTRL+A
SHIFT+CTRL+B
SHIFT+CTRL+C
etc...

I'd then simple list those along with what they do, and simply leave people to assign those into their ED config.

It's a shame as there's clearly some clever VA configs out there, but releasing them isn't straight forward (as they just will not match peoples ED configs).

If you do download a VA profile, be prepared to amend it, and/or your ED profile to "connect" them. You'll also definately end up personalising it too!

In wombats youtube video...

2 questions..
what commands is he using for "Evade"? just thrusters?

also..
it seems that when using trackIR he looks around nice and easy when an enemy flys past.
He looks up etc etc.

Does he have to issue the "look around" command before he looks?
or
is this mapped somehow to the trackIR that when he looks up.. it just looks up and when he looks back ahead.. its locked back to normal?

Wombat's video? Link?

With TrackIr and EdTracker typically it's just always enabled. You can of course tell ED to turn headlook off and on, but generally when it's on, your simple move your head aread (in real life) and the virtual head (so view) changes to match. Only difference is your read head movements are small, and your virtual head movements are bigger. So a small look left is all that's require to look 90 degrees in the game.

I guess voice attack is somewhat limited..

example..

I want to go to contacts..

usually (with normal config) I would hit 1 for the left hand view.. then cycle to Contacts.

But.....
sometimes there are more menus .. so.. Contacts might be a different number of keystrokes.

(using the Contacts menu as an example.. same situation if you were trying to get to something else without a keybind)

anyway to program this?

No, unless there is a concrete set of key scrokes to get somewhere, VA is somewhat stuffed.

You can of course use variables in VA to keep track of where it's got you, but the moment you use a keyboard or joystick to move around, VA will be lost.

They'd need to offer hot keys to the individual tabs or functions.

eg: To allow VA to request docking is not really possible until a dedicate key is offered or request docking can always be reached by a concrete path - That's whay I've asked for a dedicated key, or for it to be offered via coms - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38877

Ok so been looking into this game a lot recently and after reading this forum post on this voice program, my mind has wondered into a question / scenario.

Would it be possible to lets say key bind things to the phrase "Battle Stations" or "Battle Systems Activate" and all defenses, weapons, ect would come online ready to fire some ***** out of the vacuum of space?

Or perhaps the phrases "Exit Stage Left" or "Emergency Plan Delta" to automatically activate and initiate a jump to the closest or previous system in your in need of a fast exit guessing you need to aim?

It's not VA that's limited, it's the ED control system.

For example: I have about 12 commands to set my power distribution. I can do it because power distribution uses key presses and I can go through a sequence of keys to get exactly where I want to be. There is a reset, a default start position (balanced power) so you know exactly where to start).

I tried (and managed) to setup a sequence to change the turret targeting. But you have to be on the correct tab first and if you are not on the correct tab you could set anything by accident.

When you move to a tab (on the right - functions tab) the cursor moves to the top. You can then send commands to move down, pause, down, pause etc until you are on the setting and then select until you get the right one and then return from the panel.

But you have to manually select the correct panel first (there is no default panel to be sure you are starting from).

If there were a key to go to right panel, first tab (and the equivalent for each panel) you could work it out from there.

If you had the option to set a key for any of the possible commands (or at least select a tab) and always started at the top of a tab you could do anything with VA.

Overall VA has become a must have a long with my x52pro to enhance this fantastic game.

(TrackIr + clip is the only thing on my christmas list this year).
