VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Interestingly, another game studio had so much disrespect, toxicity and hate from their "avid fans" that they posted, on their own forum that they would not be releasing their next offering with VR support, they just didn't want the grief from those who consider they weren't doing it right...

What I got from reading that post (I wish I could find it again) was that there are some VR owners who consider themselves exceptionally special, and what goes along with that is exceptional arrogance, doesn't it?

Sounds awfully like the 230 pages here, slights to the developers, tantrums (just go back and read the first 50 pages of whining) and so on...
Pardon me but you brought the arrogance issue up not me. Right here it is in black and white.

Not specifically directed at you, more a general observation; also, I know I'm outing myself as a fuddy-duddy-old-man-yelling-at-clouds. But the way people speak to or about the poeple at frontier rubs me the wrong way.

My suggestion: If you want the developers and execs of Frontier to listen to you maybe the first step is meeting them with a bit more respect. This would include not calling them out kind of rudely by their last name AND spelling it wrong (on purpose, as it seems to me), or calling them incompetent, lazy, second-rate or whatever. And "the new guy" has joined Frontier in 1998, if you believe their own website.

If I were a developer at frontier, the way people tend to call them out, alienate and belittle them, I wouldn't lift a finger to save your grandmother from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal.
Excellent post.

This thread is even more relevant now then when Odyssey was first released.
The VR technology and video card power is moving forward a a rapid pace, hopefully making it easier and more attractive to Frontier to support.

We are just a couple of months away from RTX-4000 cards coming out that are reported as somewhere twice the power of the 3000 series cards.
VR technology is exciting with the new pancake lenses, smaller form factor, eye tracking.

As VR is still in Elite Dangerous it’s only natural to hope that VR will continue to improve in Elite Dangerous.
Talking about VR’s current state and its potential future is healthy for Elite.

I for one along with others would pony up for a VR add on that enables VR.

Hope. Okay.

Incase anybody is thinking about buying the Varjo Aero headset the reviews are horrible on it.

Everything I have seen and read about the Aero is it have the sharpest picture of all the headsets.
It’s expensive but many have said it’s the best now.

The two main complaints I have seen about the Aero, other than the lack of integrated audio, and the price, is that many are having a hard time finding the sweet spot, resulting in considerable image warping and pupil swim, and that many units have been delivered with dead pixels.

2000 quid a pop....the aero won't Be heading my way anytime soon, nor ever hehe.
Hp reverb G3 mmm now that's a plus 1. If they ever pull their finger out.
Meantime we just wait. I've promised myself the next headset will have zero screen door.

And at least the same FoV as the VI, for me anyhoo

maybe it is because i started with the DK2, and as such i can zone it out... but already consider my reverb G2 to have gotten rid of screen door, and my quest 2 i would say it is slight bordering on negligable.

for me improvements i would like to see on the quest 3 would be a dedicated video out and improved FOV (i can live with the audio)

and for the G3 i would like to see improved controller tracking along with improved FOV.

i find the Reverb G2 to be weighted very well, thanks to a decent head mount (a tightening k.n/ob (gotta love ott word filters) like on the index would be welcome however)

the quest 2 feels very front heavy, mostly due to the battery and poor out of the box head strap, but it is improved somewhat with after market head mount. this will always be an issue with standalone devices however so long as the battery is mounted in the front of the unit next to the screen

Just a short hop to gamers in general. VR players are gamers are they not?
Indeed they are, a particularly toxic arm of the player community, allegedly.

ETA: I have VR, but I don't consider myself a "VR Player" as that would indicate some exclusivity in play. I play in VR when the opportunity presents itself - which is much more in the Summer months, but that brings along with it generally higher temperatures, which dissuades me from having a hot box on my face, somewhat. It does seem that the "VR Player" is a different breed by far to an occasional user.

when it comes to ED I am certainly a VR player...... I dont consider myself toxic however and always try to be polite (but absolutely do get triggered and do respond in kind. Be respectful to me and i will be respectful to you (not you personally RC!)

The reason i am so vocal about VR is simple really..... I love the game (in VR) but dont enjoy it much out of VR - For me the game has a lot of issues gameplay wise, which i can ignore when in VR because it is so damn immersive..... YMMV of course and not saying other players are wrong............... So for me dropping VR is in any practical sense the same as how console users must feel with no chance of affording a gaming PC.

I dont want to lose Elite Dangerous, my responses are as much about desperation and concern rather than anything else. remember at one point in this thread (i think it was) we were told to assume no VR support at all in Odyssey, even in ship or SRV. Thankfully that never happened.

PS currently watching subnautica VR fix mod video by paradise decay........ damnit i have to get back to that game, it is only one of a handful of games which came close to the feeling that i got in Elite.... (albeit at a different scale)

imo there is a lot of stuff there that elite could ape from subnautica which i think would fit really well for a future expansion.

Right, especially since the replacement of the codebase of Horizons is on the...horizon. (VR) Players are loosing a lot of performance this way, which is especially crucial for VR players. While the increased requirements on GPU performance can easily, but painfully, be dealt with by lowering rendering resolution, the impact on CPU performance requirements cannot be mitigated as easily. This is, for me, resulting in one less major reason for starting up ED.
