VR to remain same in odyssey (with bug fixes)

From Todays stream - this is paraphrasing, as it's from memory, but:

The state of VR (flat screen etc) is how VR will be for odyssey - it will not change.
"We will fix any existing (odyssey bugs), but that's it"

Not surprising, but sad.

Edit: I only bought my VR to play Elite. I have however moved onto plenty of other games since then, but it was my first, and original reason for buying it.

You mean you dont like the 2d view when walking around ? do you think Fdev are magical techno wizards that can implement the same VR that exists in SRV/space ships but with the camera view placed in a helmet and basically the rest of game can behave the same exact way as it does now?

Please. It's one thing to have high expectations, but it's another to expect them to be Warlocks.

Stop fueling the fire.

Honestly i don't think it's the size of the VR crowd. I think they are honestly not able to

Hmm - who knows. VR from s stationary point of view (in vehicle / Ship), is different from on foot. Alex VR did it, but that was built from the ground up with that in mind.
I'm sure there is more to it than we think.
As a dev chap of 34 years (hell what happened to my life), I know for certain that things are always much more difficult than people think.

EDIT: changed often to always.
The number of people over the years who have just said "surely it's just a case of copy and pasting from x"

Yep. Nevertheless it's a slap into the face.

The obvious reason we are not getting full-on foot VR support at least with freelook is the TERRIBLE FPS in settlements 3080/90's in 2d are getting sub 60fps at resolutions quite a bit lower than a recent VR HMD, and bear in mind VR needs to generate TWO different images to create the stereoscopic 3D image,
So, untill the rending pipeline on foot is fixed we won't be seeing full VR support, simple as that as far as I see it.

Obviously they can't. Nobody (usually) intends to put out something full of bugs and half completed features. it's a mixture of talent deficit and management decisions that lead to things like this and how it takes over a month for bugs introduced in a recent update to be fixed (if it's ever fixed).

It's definitely a shame because VR was the only thing that made many activities still fun despite you having done them a bunch of times already.

and it's not rocket science. VR is already in the game, The UI is the only thing that really has to change to deal with the FOV. Even if it's not ideal ..it would be better than a floating 2d screen.

Basically it's hard to read this as anything else than "VR was nice for promoting the game, so goodbye and thanks for all the fish". Well, if they fix the bugs as promised, and optimization, I can sort of live with it. On the other hand update 5 is already being delayed a week, so probably most of the team is now focusing on consoles.

Want to know the funny thing about the 2D screen? i think the pancake players see the same but don't notice it. The HUD for this for instance is not in the 3D space but in the the main menu HUD layer...

But i thought performance wasn't a widespread problem and that the terrible framerate was just a minority of players with odd configurations. Are you suggesting that there is some truth to these steam reviews i've been reading non-stop since launch and replying to individually to tell them how wrong they are?

It's going to take a few months to learn the proper order of scene creation so that the render pipeline can start to be optimized on an engine that nobody else uses using a hardware api that is over 1 generation behind what all these tutorials are written for.

That’s…disappointing, to say the least 😅

Virtual flatscreen for good? I know they’ve got to concentrate on the consoles for the rest of the year, but I was at least hoping for something in the future, even if it was in 2022.

At least the vanity cam works (excepting the controls bug) on foot, so I can still go for my “proper” VR excursions.
(Edit: …and it appears that the last update changed the camera suite avatar behaviour - it now fades away if you step into it instead of just clipping, which means no more pretend first-person body. I liked looking down and watching my space-boots leaving footprints 😕)
